Paper-making, compass, gunpowder (火药) and printing (印刷术) are the Four Great Inventions of ancient China.

In the Western Han Dynasty (朝代), people know how to make paper. In the Eastern Han Dynasty, Cai Lun uses tree bark, old cloth, and fishnets to make paper. These things are easy to find and cheap. Since then, more people can use paper.

Compass is also called Sinan. It is invented in China during the Han Dynasty. The spoon on the compass always points (指) to the south. It helps travelers to find their way.

Gunpowder is invented in China during the Tang Dynasty. It is a mixture of sulfur, charcoal, and saltpeter. At first, it is used in fireworks. Then people use it in cannons and guns.

Printing is invented in China during the Song Dynasty. It uses small blocks to create printed pages. So people can print books faster. After that, more people can read books and learn new things.

There are four people in my family—my dad, my mum, my brother and me. My father is a doctor. ① He always goes to work by car. My mother is a teacher. She usually goes to work by subway. My brother and I are both students. He often goes to school by bus. My school is near my home. So ② I usually go to school by bike. Sometimes, I walk to school. Walking is good exercise.

 My family lives in a big and nice house. There is a living room, three bedrooms,a study(书房),a kitchen and two toilets. Last week, my friends came to my house. We played hide-and-seek in the house. We had a great time.
