Do you know the Monkey Buffet Festival in Thailand? It is on the last Sunday of November. It is a great day for monkeys in Thailand. The festival has a history of 35years. People there think monkeys can bring good luck to them. So, to thank monkeys, they have this special festival. 

On that day every year, people put lots of fruit, vegetables, cakes and even drinks on the tables outside. They are all for monkeys. Many people come to see the monkeys on that day. 

During the festival, there are a lot of interesting activities about monkeys. Young people always dress like monkeys and they sing and dance and play some music on the street. 

Monkeys always live in groups. Most of them live in the trees. They are good at running and jumping. They eat fruit, vegetables, plants and birds' eggs. Monkeys are clever. Do you think so?

Languages play an important part in our life. Mother language is a very intimate（密切的）thing to us. For people who speak an ancient tongue as their mother language, it helps them keep their traditions. If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart. 

The associations that lie in the languages bring ideas and pictures to our minds. Associations are just the power of languages. However, how language came into being is unknown. All we know is that some early men invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could talk with each other. Later they agreed on certain signs, which could be put together to show those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, are called words

Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words bring back to us the happy and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases. 

Over the last century, more than 400 languages have died out. Some languages are now spoken only by a few dozens of people. Why are humans speaking fewer languages than we once did? The answer has to do with globalization（全球化）. Nowadays, it's more useful to speak certain languages-English is one example-rather than others. 

As US writer Rita Mae Brown wrote, "Language is the roadmap of a culture. It tells where its people come from and where they are going." We should learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctly, or they will make ourselves silly and common. 

Sometimes we make friends with unexpected （料想不到的） people. For example, who has ever thought that a spider would make friends with a pig? But in E. B White's classic novel Charlotte's Web, this is exactly what happens. 

In the story, Wilbur is an unlucky pig. When he was born, he is so small that the farmer wants to end the pig's life. Luckily, the farmer's daughter stops him from killing Wilbur and decides to raise the pig in a barnyard（谷仓的院子）. 

Wilbur grows day by day and makes many friends in the barnyard, the spider, Charlotte is one of them. However, one day a sheep tells Wilbur that he will be served up as dinner. But Charlotte has decided to save her friend from this danger. By making words such as"famous pig" in her web（网）, she makes the farmer believe that Wilbur is some kind of amazing animal, too important to kill. After Wilbur is saved, Charlotte is so tired that she finally dies. 

Actually, the writer makes a spider the hero of the book. Many people are afraid of animals like spiders. But Charlotte does everything in her power to keep Wilbur alive. It shows how a strong friendship can last through the worst possible time.

Go to the country

Go to the country whose language you are learning. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} For example，when I started learning Italian， I got the chance to stay in Italy for a few days！ And then everywhere I went I was surrounded （包围） by delicious food， interesting Roman buildings. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

Read， read， read！

Reading is an important skill in language learning. But I'm not just talking about serious things like difficult newspaper articles. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} But I would advise you not  to choose difficult things to read， because you are more likely to get bored and give up. Instead， you should choose something fun and interesting. 

TV and films

Another thing that really helps me learn a language is watching TV or films in the language. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} You can start with a children's show or something that you have already seen in your native language. That way you will already know what's happening and you can write down useful words and sentences or try to repeat what they say.
