1970 was World Conservation (保护) Year. The UN wanted everyone to know that the world was in danger. They hoped something could be done.

    Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were about 1,300 kinds of plants, trees and flowers in Holland, but now only about 866 are left. The others have been destroyed by modern people and their science. We are polluting earth, air, water and everything around us. We can't live without these things. If things go on like this, we shall destroy ourselves.

    What will happen in the future? Perhaps it's more important to ask "What must we do?". More and more young people have known this. Many of them are helping to save our Earth. For example, they plant trees. In a small town in the United States, a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometres of their river. Young people may hear about conversation through an album called "No One's Gonna Change Our World". It includes songs of Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from selling it will help to conserve tigers, elephants and pandas on Earth.

My grandfather kept working hard and finally made his  {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(梦想) come true. Things do not come easily in life. That is what I have learnt from my grandfather. I am really  {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(感到自豪的;感到骄傲的) of him. Now our family live in Paris happily.

During the Warring States Period, there was a king who deeply loved music, especially the sounds of the Yu, a traditional wind {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. He enjoyed it most when {#blank#}2{#/blank#} the musicians played together. A man named Nanguo, who knew that the king's musicians were well-paid, wanted to join them {#blank#}3{#/blank#} some money. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}he couldn't play the Yu at all, he cleverly took advantage of the king's preference for group performances. With this in mind, Nanguo {#blank#}5{#/blank#} to become part of band. Each time the band performed, Nanguo watched and learned from others. Surprisingly, he kept his {#blank#}6{#/blank#} for many years. This lasted until the king passed away and his son became the new king. Although the new king also loved the Yu, he had different {#blank#}7{#/blank#} from his father. He liked the music when his musicians played the Yu alone. This made Nanguo very {#blank#}8{#/blank#}because he knew he couldn't play the Yu. Afraid of being discovered and punished, he decided it was time to leave {#blank#}9{#/blank#}

Like Nanguo, a person who doesn't have real skills and only {#blank#}10{#/blank#}others can only fool people for a little while. Sooner or later, the truth will come out, and they will {#blank#}11{#/blank#} embarrassment. Have you ever met someone like this?

Sometimes, a terrible tragedy (悲剧) can encourage us to do important things. Dashrath Manjhi was born into a poor family in Gehlaur village, India in 1934. He ran away from home when he was young and began working in the coal mines (煤矿) in Dhanbad. Later he returned to his home village and got married.

One terrible day in 1959, his wife, Falguni Devi, fell from the village mountain and was badly hurt. The nearest town with a doctor was close but a mountain stood in the way. The path (小路) around the mountain made the journey 90 kilometers. Falguni died before they could see the doctor.

Manjhi wanted to do something. He decided to cut a path through the mountain so that the village could reach medical care faster.

He took a hammer (锤子) and chisel (凿子) and began hammering through the mountain. People thought he was mad but he continued. He made a path 110 meters long, 7.7 meters deep and 9.1 meters wide. It took 22 years but Manjhi completed the road in 1982. It cut the distance between the village and the neighboring areas from 55 to 15 km. For his work, Manjhi became known as the Mountain Man.

After his death in 2007 at the age of 73, an official road was built through the mountain. Manjhi was given a state funeral (葬礼) and his face was put on a stamp in 2016. He has had films and documentaries made about him. He used his terrible personal tragedy to do something that would hopefully stop others from experiencing such tragedy in their own lives.
