I can't forget that day. It was a cold snowy morning. The (天空) was gray and dark. I got up early and went to a new school, which is the most (著名的) one in the foreign city. I was walking alone and worried about lots of things because it was the first time for me to stay (在国外).

It was early, so it was (寂静的) outside. Suddenly a girl who was riding her bike got into trouble. She fell off the bike and tried to get up. But she failed. Without thinking, I went over and (设法完成) to help her to stand up. She said" Thank you" with a smile and then (离开). Her words warmed me a lot.

Finally, I got to school. The teacher introduced me to the whole class. Then he asked me to sit (在······旁边) a girl. I felt so nervous. Soon the bell rang for the geography class. Their textbooks were different! Just when I wanted to ask the teacher for help, a geography book with a national (旗帜) on its cover was in front of me." Let's share," the friendly girl next to me said." Hi, I'm Carrie. I'm (加拿大人)." To my surprise, it was the girl that I helped this morning. Later on, we became good friends.

From that I learned: to help others is actually to help (我们自己). What life teaches us is not only knowledge but also experience.

For hours, the secretary did nothing for them, hoping that they would finally go away. They didn't. "Maybe if they justsee you for a few minutes, they'll leave," the secretary finallytold the president.

The presidentlooked down at the couple. The lady told him, "We had a son that hadstudied in Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard. But he was accidentally killed. And my husband and I would like to build something for him in Harvard. "Madam," the president saidangrily, "we can't put up a statue forevery person who attended Harvard and died."

"Oh, no," the lady explainedquickly, "we mean we would givea building to Harvard." The president lookedat their usual clothes, and then said, "A building! Do youknow how much a building costs? It took us over seven and a half million dollarsto build Harvard."

The lady turned to her husband and said quietly,"Is that all it coststo start a university?" Her husband nodded.Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, California wherethey built a university with their name—a memorial(纪念)to a son that Harvardno longer cared about.

You can easily judge the character of others byhow they treat those who can do nothing for them or to them.

 阅读下面短文,掌握其大意, 然后从16-25各题所给的A、B、C和D项中, 选出最佳选项。

This summer, when I walked into my grandparents' house with my little brother Frank, Everything still looked the same. Grandpa's blue 1 was on his chair. My cousin Jack was playing in the yard as if nothing had happened.

" Let's go to catch fish!" Jack pulled out the fish net from the corner, Grandpa's net.

Last summer, I was holding the 2 when Grandpa asked me whether I could help him teach Frank to play chess. I said no because I wanted to catch fish. Grandpa had been the one who'd taught us how to catch fish, but then the 3 made him stay behind.

Now I wouldn't have a chance to play chess with him any more. Nobody knew how 4 I was for saying no to Grandpa.

When we reached the stream, we began to catch fish. Suddenly, Jack shouted, " Look! Frank is in the water. He is shaking!" We hadn't brought anything to keep 5 , so I had to send him home. Grandma was 6 to see a wet Frank. She hurried to take him into the room and 7 put Grandpa's blue blanket around him.

As I went to the stream again to meet Jack, I looked back at Frank with that old blanket. Something seemed to 8 me at that moment. Everything was just like before, but Grandpa was gone.

I walked to Frank. " Did Grandpa teach you to play chess last summer?"I asked. " No, Grandpa   was too sick then. " he said, "I 9 him. "

" Me, too. " When I said it, I knew Grandpa was never gone. What 10 us was still there. It could be the fish net. It could be the chess. It could be the blue blanket.
