On 28 of March Richard Byrd stood outside the small house. He shook hands with the menwho were leaving. They were heading back to the main camp on the coast of Antarctica （南极洲）. 

He would1 to work at the base camp. 

"I don't like leaving you here alone，"Pete Demas said. "I'll be2 ，"Byrd replied. 

He was looking forward to the challenge of spending the winter at the base camp. He would be recording the weather. There was plenty of food and fuel （燃料） in the tiny house. He felt sure3 would go wrong. 

But something did go wrong. Byrd was burning the fuel for4 . But the fumes （有毒气体）were not leaving the house. Slowly he was being poisoned（中毒）. On May 31 he broke down. 

When he came to，he made himself into his sleeping bag. Three days later he5 it was a Sunday. The men would be6 his radio message. Byrd moved hard out of bed and 7 the call. He didn't want the men to know how 8 he was. It was too dangerous for them to come to save him. 

By will-power alone，Byrd managed to stay alive. He was so9 that he could hardly walk. But he forced himself to do the basics. He10 food and made myself eat. He took11 of weather and sent radio messages. But by late June，the men12 that something was wrong. Most of the time，Byrd's messages made no sense. 

On August 11Demas and two others reached the base camp. They13 recognized （认出） Byrd. He was very thin and looked terrible. Byrd14 them and then fell to the ground. The men had arrived in time. After two months of care，Byrd's good15 returned. He and his men worked together again. 

Last term, we went to a group of islands for our school trip. It was exciting at first, but by the end of the day, I'd say it was really a 1 journey. 

We got up early and jumped onto the boats. As the boat moved on, I felt the breeze(微风) rushed into my face. The first island we arrived at was called the Island of the Pregnant Maiden. We were allowed into the water 2 about half an hour, and it was fun playing with my classmates. 

All was fine until one of my water shoes 3 into the water. So I had to do the rest of the trip with only one 4 on. 

5 we first walked through the forest, I thought it was a nice walk. But with only one shoe, my foot came across either cold shards(玻璃碎片)or hot stones along the way. My foot 6 badly with every step I took. But then something magical happened-I discovered a seashell the size of my hand! I felt like I had found gold and all the pain was worth it. 

The trip was a precious(宝贵的)experience-the beautiful sea views and the beach treasure hunt were great moments for me. I've learned an important 7 from that day. That is to not focus on the bad memories, 8 instead to remember the cheerful feelings and value them. 

Nick had a book in his hand and tears in his eyes. "What worries you, Nick?" asked Mrs. White. 

"Our teacher asked us to recite the p {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Little Jim. I don't think I can do it well." said Nick. 

"Why not?" asked Mrs. White. 

"My classmates said that I can't. And I myself also think so," said Nick {#blank#}2{#/blank#} a sad voice, "The poem is so long and difficult for me."

"Dear son," said Mrs. White, "look at that snail（蜗牛） on the wall. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} slow it is! {#blank#}4{#/blank#}watch it. You will see it get to the highest part at last. So just try a few lines each day, and you may recite it in the end."

"Well, then let me try {#blank#}5{#/blank#} best to recite it, Mom." said Nick. 

And he tried it. 

At last, the day came. To everyone' surprise, Nick did not m {#blank#}6{#/blank#} a word when reciting the poem to the class. And the teacher said Nick did best. 

"And now tell us how you could recite the poem so well." said the teacher. 

"I saw a snail climb up the wall little by little. It {#blank#}7{#/blank#} stop. At last, it arrived at the highest part. So I also recited the poem little by little, and did not give up." said Nick. 

"Well done, Nick!" said the teacher. "Now boys and girls, let us give a good c {#blank#}8{#/blank#} to Nick and the snail on the wall." The classroom rang with a great cheer.

How can you practice your spoken English? 

The first and the most important thing is to believe in yourself. You should always be full of confidence，or you will never be able to improve your English. You should often {#blank#}1{#/blank#} yourself， "Come on！ Don't be afraid！"

Maybe you are afraid  {#blank#}2{#/blank#} losing face， but you should think we are students and we're learning. There's no need to worry about anything. You must always be active in practicing. It's no problem that your {#blank#}3{#/blank#}and intonation（语调） won't be as good  as a native（本地的） speaker because we are Chinese {#blank#}4{#/blank#} we haven't had many chances to live in foreign countries and talk with the people there. But you must know that the main goal of studying English is to make ourselves understood and understand others. You should {#blank#}5{#/blank#} native speakers will not laugh at you. Instead， they will encourage you. So if you are brave {#blank#}6{#/blank#} ， you'll certainly make rapid progress in your spoken English. 

 November 7h is coming at last! {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(几乎) every student in our school is looking forward to it with great excitement, for the Sports Day is {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(发生) on that big day. Our school has the great event {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(一次)a year.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(清晰地), the Sports Day is one of the most popular events in our school. It wins the {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(心) of all the students. This year, the event is going to be even more exciting, for there will be a swimming {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(比赛) in the new pool. As the event is coming {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(接近), everyone is working hard to get ready for it. On the playground, you could see the sportsmen' s{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(最富有的) display(展示) of talent and sportsmanship, giving their best in every activity. "Our class had a {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (讨论) about the sportsmen last Friday and I {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(计划) to take part in the basketball game." said a boy from Grade Eight.

 The Sports Day isn't just about winning, it's about coming together, supporting each other, and enjoying the spirit of sportsmanship.
