My Unforgettable Memories in Junior High

How time flies! Three years passed in the blink of an eye. 

I believe that junior high school has been a valuable experience for me, and I am grateful for all the memories I have made. 

"They'll understand when they're older, " Hearing this, as a parent, you may feel better. But the fact is that even when kids become adults, it doesn't mean they'll agree with your decisions. 

Recently, I have had lots of conversations with my 19-year-old daughter about decisions I made in her childhood. She says she disagrees with some of them and some have even caused harm to her. That hurts. I think I must have failed as a parent. 

It turns out that my daughter's questioning(质疑) is very normal. It happens to almost every teenager when they are in their late teens. 

"In their late teens, teenagers start to find out who they are and what they stand for（支持），"says Mary Fleming, a college professor. "The search for identity (身份) is not always smooth. " The first task for teenagers is to dismantle the old life structure (结构) and to build a new one in its place. In other words, parents created that old life structure of childhood, so they are often at the heart of that dismantling process. 

Hearing critical（批评的）words is hard. But if your teenager comes to you wanting to talk about it，pay attention to him or her. For both of you, it's the beginning of understanding each other. And as they grow up, teenagers will realize they can't live their lives over again, and neither can their parents. They will understand that their parents did the best they could with what they knew at the time. 

Most of us have three meals a day. We take food for granted (想当然) and we don't think about it. 1 experts argue a food crisis (危机) is coming. This crisis is going to make us 2 the way we think about food. 

Food is 3 great need because of the growing world population. By 1960, the population was about three billion. It doubled to about six billion by 1999. By 2050, this planet will need to 4 at least nine billion people. As a result, the food prices get higher and higher. 

So, what can a 5 and crowded world do? One suggestion is to eat  6 meat. Meat uses more natural resources than grains (谷物). It requires more  7 to produce one pound of meat than to produce one pound of grain. It also requires between 5 and 10 times more  8 than vegetables. So, eating less meat will provide (提供) more land for farming, and it will 9 water.

To eat less meat, people will need to change their eating habits. That will not be 10 . Americans, for example, have always loved meat. In general, they eat twice as much meat as people in other 11 . At the same time, in developing countries like China and Brazil, sales of meat have doubled in the last 20 years.12 will double again by 2050. The growing need for meat will  13 putting pressure on natural resources.

 If you think of after-school activities as a waste of time, you are wrong ! After-school activities help us grow up in many ways. Above all, they offer us chances to practice what we learn in class. Through various activities, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} and a lot of new things that we can't learn from our books. What's more, they help to develop our abilities that we need both for our studies now and for our work and life in the future.

"Another bad day at school?" my father asked as I came into the room.

"How could you tell? I didn't shut the door heavily or anything," I replied. Over the past two months I had either done this or thrown my backpack across the room every time I came home from school. Papa thinks it has something to do with moving to a new house.

"I know this move has been hard on you. Leaving your friends and cousins behind is tough," Papa said, as he put his arm around my shoulder. "What you must remember is that, with a lot of hard work and some time, you will make new friends."

"You don't know how hard it is. This year my baseball team would have won the championship. They won't even give me a chance to pitch(投球) here. All I get to play is right field, and that's the worst!"

 Papa turned toward me. "Things will get better, I promise you. Let me ask you, do you know why you were named David Lorenzo?"

"Yes, your name is David and grandfather's name is Lorenzo."

"Very good, and what makes your grandfather so important?"

"He was the first in the family to come to this country and all that," I answered.

"That is only partly correct. Your grandfather was a very great man. In Mexico, he had been a teacher. When he came to America, he could only get low-paid labour jobs because he didn't speak the language. It took him two years before he spoke English well enough to be allowed to teach here, but he did it. He never complained because he knew change could be difficult. Did he ever tell you that?" my father asked.

I looked down at my feet, ashamed at my behaviour. "No. That must have been hard," I said sheepishly.

"Your grandfather taught me that if you let people see your talent, they will accept you for who you are.I want you to always remember what my father taught me, even if it takes a few years for people to see who you are," said Papa.

All I could say was, "Okay." Then I asked, "What should I do now?"

Laughing, Papa said, "How about you pitch a few to me? You need some work."

★Write down key facts. If your teacher writes notes on the blackboard, that's great. You can copy them or write down the most important facts of all in class. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} For example, some teachers may focus on (关注) lots of dates and facts in class, but they only write the important ones on the blackboard. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may say something important again and again.
