Learning for practice

It's important for us teenagers to put what we've learnt into practice in daily life……

Liu Yaxuan is totally a homebody. Every weekend, this14-year-old student from Tsinghua High School watches popular TV dramas like The Journey of Flower(《花千骨》) and plays with her mobile phone. She hates playing outdoor sports. "It's too tiring," she said.

She is not alone. In recent years, more and more Chinese teenagers are becoming homebodies. A survey of kids aged 2 to 14 showed about 60 percent of them spend less than one hour doing outdoor activities every day. 

 This problem may have to do with heavy academic pressure(学业压力). Hu Huilan, 12, from Shenzhen Nanshan Language School, is busy with much homework and many after- school classes on weekends. "I don't want to get behind, " she said. 

 Even if this isn't a problem, kids still prefer indoor life. Wang Di, 12, from Anhui No. 50 Middle School, often reads Harry Potter, listens to music and surfs the Internet at home. "I can do so many things I like at home rather than hanging out in smoggy weather, " she said. 

 The situation for foreign students is quite different. Tina Smith, 15, from a high school in Toronto Canada, says her peers(同龄人) don't like staying indoors at all. " They spend their free time outdoors even if it just means going to the park or reading a book under the tree. Nice weather, little homework and rich outdoor activities enable us to do that, " she said. 

The computer is fast, and never makes a mistake, while people are too slow, and1 of mistakes sometimes. That's what people often say when they talk about computers. For over a quarter of a century, scientists have been2 better and better computers. Now a computer can3 a lot of everyday jobs wonderfully. It is4 used in factories, hospitals, post offices and airports. A computer can report, decide and control it in almost5 field. Many computer scientists are thinking of making the computer "think" like a6 . With the help of a person, a computer can draw pictures, write music, talk with people, play chess,7 . voices , translate languages and so on. Perhaps computers will one day really think and feel. Do you think the people will be afraid when they find that the computer is too clever to listen to and serve the people? No, people will make better use of the computers in the future. Man is always the8 of the computer. The computer9 . only with the help of man. It cannot take the10 of man. 

Like most parents, mine spent much time advising me to take part in activities outside school. However, they never forced me, and I never found anything I was interested in. Then one day a friend at school told me about a local dance group and asked if I wanted to go with her. So, after school we went to talk to the dance teacher. She explained everything to us and we both decided to join.

My parents were really pleased to hear I'd finally chosen dancing. They think if you develop an interest in doing something yourself, it will be easier to succeed.

I' ve now been attending the dancing classes for 3 years and I really enjoy it. We are organized into age groups, and at 16 I'm now in the oldest class. There are classes of swing dance, ballet(芭蕾舞), street dance and folk dance. I practice street dance and I'm quite good at it. I also help out leading some of the younger children.

We also take part in events like local and even national dance shows, and relatives turn up to see their children perform. My parents are proud of me as they tell me all the time.

Now I' ll be too old to continue dancing with the group. However, I have already made plans to continue with them. The dance school has become very successful and is opening new classes. The director has asked if I'd like to be one of the group leaders and of course I said" yes"!
