One day, Mr. White takes his mother to a shopping mall. He wants to buy a new pair of shoes for her.

There are so many beautiful shoes, and the old woman tries on（试穿） some shoes happily. But she doesn't like any of them when she knows the prices.

Seeing this, Mr. White speaks to the shopkeeper quietly（轻轻地）, "Next time. when my mother shows interest in（对……感兴趣） some pairs, just tell her the price is only 15 dollars."

"But that's not the real price!" the shopkeeper says.

"Don't worry! I will pay（付钱） for the shoes at the real price."

Then, the old woman gets her favorite shoes. Mr. White pays 15 dollars at first, and then he pays another 50 dollars privately.

Three days later, the shopkeeper asks Mr. White to come back and pay more money. Mr. White feels surprised. He asks, "Why?" Because your mother brings many of her friends to buy that kind of shoes."

Today is my birthday. I'm 16 years old. I'm not a little boy running in the hallways(走廊) at school. I wanted to know who would 1 my birthday. I really wanted to have a birthday cake because I wanted to 2 .But I got up and found my 3 didn't do anything. My father was 4 a newspaper on the sofa. My mother went out to buy some things for lunch. I5 my computer and went online. There were just some people online. No one said 6 about my birthday. After thirty7 , my mum came back. She went into the8 and cooked. It seemed that the world forgot me and I wasn't9 at all. I said to myself, "You are 16 now. You're not a child. Forget your birthday."

But when I was doing my maths homework, my 10 came to me and asked, "What kind of cake do you want?"11 a surprise(惊喜)! At that time, I didn't know12 to say. I chose a chocolate cake in the end. I knew that the whole world may forget me,13 my mum wouldn't.

Also, when I went online in the evening, I talked to my friends. Many of them said happy birthday to14 . And my phone was full of text messages(短信)saying"Happy birthday".

It was a(n) 15 day after all!

It's 6:00 p. m. Kate's family are having dinner. There is rice, eggs, salads, strawberries and some vegetables like tomatoes, onions and carrots on the table. But Kate doesn't like vegetables. She doesn't want to eat them and puts her bo wl away.

" Kate," says her father.

" Where are my hamburgers?" asks Kate.

" Don't think about them. We need to eat healthily," says Mom.

" How about some ice- cream, then?" asks Kate.

" Kate," Dad calls her name again. He thinks the dinner is nice.

Kate takes a bite(咬一口) of the tomato and quickly spits(吐出) it back into the bowl.

" Kate! Room! Now!" says Dad. He doesn't like her bad eating habits.

Kate runs to her room and cries, but she soon stops. Usually, her parents will get her some other food she likes if she doesn't eat dinner. So she waits.

At about 7:00 p. m., Mom tries to get Kate to eat some vegetables, but she says no.

At 9:00 p. m., Kate wants to eat something, but her parents still don't give her anything to eat.

At 10:00 p. m., Kate goes to the kitchen and sees some vegetables on the table. They don't look so bad. And you know what? They don't taste so bad, either.

Kate learns that she should eat health y food and live a healthy life.

Life Is Full of the Unexpected

In Ashburn, Virginia, Rivera, 27, was running on a road at about 6 p.m. on Thursday. A 71-year-old woman from South Riding, Virginia, was driving a Toyota SUV on the road. And a deer came from somewhere suddenly.

The SUV knocked into the deer, which sent the animal flying into Rivera. She only remembers running on the road and then coming into an ambulance (救护车). The doctor, Emily, told her she needed to cut away one of her favorite running shirts. She told Rivera the shirt had deer blood all over it. "That's when I knew a deer was part of this accident, and it's amazing! Goddess. I'm still alive and I am lucky." Rivera said.

The deer died at the scene (现场). The driver was treated at Inova Loudoun Hospital and recovered. Rivera, who was taken to the same hospital and also recovered on Friday evening.

Rivera had finished five miles on Thursday in her orange running shoes and she was nearly getting to her home when the accident happened.

A woman passerby called 911 and used Rivera's phone to call her family. "Many thanks for her help. It is a pity (遗憾) that the deer lost its life in the accident." Rivera continued, "How should I retell this tale? Maybe it's hard to know where to start. Thanks to god, we are all right."

 Born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, in1868, Cai Yuanpei had a thirst for knowledge from a young age. He {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (接受)a classical education and traveled to Beijing at age 25, where he placed 37th in the country in the imperial examinations and got the high level jinshi {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (学位) in 1892. Then he went to the Hanlin Academy. 

 By the turn of the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (第二十) century, the Qing dynasty was in a mess. Cai was{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(不满意) with Qing rule. He decided to study German and dreamed of continuing his education in {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (欧洲). 

 In 1907, his dream of studying came true. He learned some good teaching {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (方法). In1911, Cai returned to China, look forward to taking part in the building of a new nation. 

 Cai returned to Peking university {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (后来) in 1919 as a headmaster. Cai {#blank#}8{#/blank#}33(传播) the values of free thinking in his class and was loved by his students. This great edu cator {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (死亡) in Hong Kong in 1940 at the age of 72. But his {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (承诺) to open discussion and effort in improve the level of education left a lasting mark on the period. He is thought as a hero to this day.
