When you think about best-selling books, The Secret Garden or the Harry Potter series may come to your mind. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Guinness World Records regarded the Xinhua Dictionary as the world's most popular dictionary and a best-selling book.

In 1950, Chinese language experts and scholars Wei Jiangong and Ye Shengtao {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (start) to edit (编辑) the Xinhua Dictionary. There was a lot of discussion, research and paper work. Many {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (people) hard work and interesting stories went into making the dictionary. In 1953, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} first Xinhua Dictionary was published.

Today, over 600 million {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (copy) of the dictionary have been sold worldwide. However, revisions (修订) to the dictionary continue to be made by editors. If the example sentences are out of date, editors need {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (make) new examples. So far, the Xinhua Dictionary has been revised 12 times. To keep up with the times, some popular and {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (wide) used Internet words were added to the dictionary. {#blank#}8{#/blank#} example, for the 12th edition, the phrases "act cute" and "car sharing" were included.

It is known to all that the Xinhua Dictionary {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (be) a useful tool now for Chinese people. It is also a good tool for foreigners who are learning about the {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (China) language and culture.

Mr Guo is a teacher from Xi'an. He asked his students to hand in their homework through a QR code(二维码). "We spent an hour or two in class learning how to generate(产生) the codes, and in the end everything gets easier", said Guo. "When students finish the homework, they keep it on WeChat(微信).Then, each student makes his own QR code and gives it to me. So I can check their work everywhere using my computer or telephone."

The QR codes can be sent to Mr Guo by email, QQ and WeChat. When Guo scans(扫描) his students' QR codes, their homework appears on his phone. He finds that their homework becomes more creative(创新的), with many pictures, music and even videos.

Guo's students like the new way and think it is interesting. "We are living in the information age. Many students like to work with computers which makes learning more fun," said Tingting, a student of Guo's.

"The paper is not easy to keep, but the code is easy to keep and share," Guo said. "It is worth trying to use new technology in education. Education itself is a kind of creation. I don't want my students to fall behind the times."

However, some parents are worried. They are afraid that their children will spend too much time on computers and less time communicating with teachers. But in fact, it's unnecessary. Students still need to look up information in books and write it down when they do their homework. They only use the code when they hand in their work, which doesn't take them too much time. Also for teachers, it allows them to check the students' work at any time. And it's also an easy way to share homework with other students.

It's a Miracle!

John Ogburn doesn't remember a single thing about Monday, June 26, 2017. He doesn't remember waking up that morning, or helping prepare breakfast for his three young children, or kissing his wife, Sarabeth Ogburn, goodbye. He doesn't remember driving to the Panera Bread restaurant, or going to his favorite seat in the back, where he regularly sat, working on his laptop. And he doesn't remember falling to the floor at about 4:15p.m. His heart had gone completely still.

Panera Bread workers April Bradley and her brother found John had passed out in the back of the restaurant. He was lying on the carpet. His face was dark purple. "It was the scariest thing I've ever seen,"Bradley says. She dialled 911. It was 4:17 p.m.

Luckily,the police officer Lawrence Guiler was about 50 feet away. Another lucky thing was that before joining the police, he had been an EMT.

Guiler arrived at Panera in less than a minute and began CPR（心肺复苏）. Within 30 seconds, another police officer, Nikolina Bajic, rushed in to help. A few minutes later, four firefighters arrived. They put an oxygen mask on John's face. They took turns performing CPR. They also used a defibrillator （通过电击使心脏恢复正常跳动的除颤器）to try to shock his heart into restarting.It didn't.

They shocked him again. And again. And again. They gave him a shot of epinephrine（肾上腺素）.Then another.Then another. Nothing. No sign of life. More than 20 minutes had gone by.

"Nobody wanted to give up on him,"says Bajic.

Around 4:30 p.m.,while John was receiving CPR, his iPhone started ringing. It was his wife. "I called a couple of times, but he didn't answer,"Sarabeth says."I thought he was in a meeting."

A little over an hour later, she received a call and rushed to the hospital. Someone informed her that John had received CPR for 38 minutes before they found pulse（脉搏）.Doctors still can't explain how this happened.

Surprisingly，the only aftereffects （事后影响）were some short-term memory loss and a sore （疼痛的）chest from the CPR.

Clubs Making a Difference for the Earth

Joining a club to help protect the environment can be both fun and impactful. Here's an interview with two students, Alex and Mia, who have started clubs at their schools to help the planet.

What is the goal of your club?

Alex:My Club, the "Clean Air Group", focuses on reducing air pollution. We encourage students to ride bikes and use public transport to cut down air pollution.

Mia: {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Our goal is to create community gardens in different parts of our school and neighbourhood to provide fresh vegetables, which are good for both people and wildlife.

How did you come up with the idea for your club?

Alex：{#blank#}2{#/blank#} And I realized how much pollution they were producing. I wanted to do something to help reduce it, and that's when I thought of cleaner ways of getting to school.

Mia: I've always enjoyed gardening with my family, and when I learned about how important plants are for the environment, I thought, "Why not start a club that lets others experience that too?"

Alex: We organize "No Car Days"where students leave their cars at home and walk,bike, or take the bus. We also invite guest speakers to talk about air pollution and its impact on our planet.

Mia:We plant and take good care of school gardens. We give away some of the produces from our gardens to local food banks.

What impact has your club had so far?

Alex: A lot of students now use bikes or carpool more often. It's great to see people being more mindful of how they travel. 

Mia: Our gardens are growing all the time. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} It's brought people together and made the school a greener, more welcoming place.

There is no way you can get on the train without your ID card now. In the near future, people will use a digital (数字的) ID on their smartphones. What a great thing it is!

On March 11, 2022, the government (政府) said it would introduce (介绍) the digital ID cards with 18 numbers. People can know some information from the ID numbers. The government wanted to make people's lives easier by introducing the digital ID cards.

The government said the digital ID cards could allow the information to be gotten by a simple scan with a smartphone. The government would also help the old people use the digital ID cards because they can't use smartphones. The government hoped that the digital ID cards would be popular. The old could also use ID cards to make their lives easier.

In fact, China started a test of the digital ID cards in 2018. It allowed people in cities including Quzhou, Hangzhou and Fuzhou to apply for digital national ID cards on Alipay. The digital ID cards could be used to open bank accounts, check into hotels and buy high-speed railway tickets. It's great.
