Learn to rise again

    It is not always easy to discover yourself.From a(/an)1age, I had a strong sense of who I wouldbecome—but an accident changed everything.

    To me, skating was more2thananything else in the world. Nothing else filled my heart with so much3.I spent 24 hours a week developing my skills. I had no social life or interestsother than4.But I was rewarded (回报) with first place medals in nearly every competition.

   5,during one competition, I fell and was badly injured. The doctor told me that Icouldn't skate any more. The pain in my back was6tobear (忍受) and even basic daily tasks became difficult.

    My passion (激情) had been7.I lost heart and had no idea what I would become. After eight months of suffering,something had to8. Instead of sitting around and wasting mydays, I began to work with local community service projects. By volunteering asa swimming teacher and summer reading assistant (助教) for kids, I gotan idea of whom I wanted to become. After a few months, I9anew interest. Little by little, I stepped out of the shadow and rebuilt my confidence.

    Sometimes, challenges in life will get in theway. We can choose to stay behind or try to get past these challenges.  My10was a challenge that failedto stop me from reaching success. Today, I'm a very confident and optimistic (乐观的) person.

Father's Day is coming. Our teacher tells us to ask our dads questions to know them more. I can't remember seeing my dad cry, 1 I ask him :"Do I make you cry before?"

"Yes, there's once,"he says.

He tells me that when I was one year old, he put a pen, a piece of paper money, and a toy 2 me. He wants to see which one I will choose. It's a tradition that a lot of Chinese people do on their kids' 3 birthdays. According to this tradition, it shows 4 the kids will value* most when they grow up. For example, if the kid takes the 5 , it means he or she will be an intelligent*person in the future. If the kid takes the money, it means he or she will value money more than others and will become rich. If the kid takes the toy, it means he or she will like fun things and 6 a lot.

My father is just doing it out of curiosity*. It is 7 for him to see which one I will choose anyway.

He says that I just sit there and look at the three things. He sits across from me and waits to see what will happen.

I move to him and push* 8 away. I go right into his arms and laugh 9 . He doesn't know that he is one of the choices.

And that is the first and only time I make him 10 .

Quan Hongchan is a famous Chinese diver (跳水运动员). {#blank#}1{#/blank#} is only sixteen years old. She was born{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Zhanjiang, Guangdong. Quan Hongchan started to learn to dive {#blank#}3{#/blank#} she was seven years old. In 2018, she {#blank#}4{#/blank#} the Guangdong diving team. She {#blank#}5{#/blank#} three years there before joining the national team at the end of 2020. At Tokyo Olympics, Quan Hongchan {#blank#}6{#/blank#} the gold medal in the 10-meter women's diving platform (平台) game. This is China's first gold {#blank#}7{#/blank#} in diving. She said "I love diving very much. My family is not very {#blank#}8{#/blank#} and my mother was ill. I want to make money to help my family, so I must work {#blank#}9{#/blank#} every day."

When my first wartime Christmas came, I was in a new soldier school in Ashland and not sure if I could make it home for the holidays. On the afternoon of December 23, we were told some of us would have three-day holidays posted. I was one of the lucky soldiers.

It was Christmas Eve when I arrived home, and a light snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door. I could see over her, into the corner of the living room where the tree had always stood. There were lights all colors shining in the green of the tree.

"Where did it come from?" I asked.

I asked the gate boy to cut it" my mother said. "I wouldn't have had one just for myself, but you called in such a rush! He just brought it in this afternoon."

The tree was almost as tall as the room, and the Tree Top Star was in its place. A few branches reached about a little disorderly at the side, I thought, and there was a big bare branch（树枝） showing in the middle. But the tree filled the room with the pleasant smell of Christmas.

"It's not like the one you want to find, " my mother went on. "Yours were always in good shape and you were good at it. I think the gate boy didn't know where to look for a better one." "Don't worry." I told her. "It's perfect."

It wasn't, of course, but at the moment I understood for the first time, all Christmas trees are perfect.
