Visiting Xi'an was once Leah's dream. It came true when she went to China along with her two friends last year.

During her 20 days in Xi'an, Leah got a chance to learn about Chinese culture closely. She visited many old buildings there. Xi'an City Wall was her favorite. In Xi'an,she enjoyed many kinds of foods and watched some traditional shows. All of them left a wonderful impression （印象）on her. Now, Xi'an is like her second home. Since Leah came back to Spain, she has been missing Xi'an very much.

Leah's 20-day stay in Xi'an was a great experience. It was a chance to increase her understanding of cultural diversity. Leah said, "The Chinese people are all friendly. The cultures are varied among countries, but we are connected by the bond（纽带）of friendship. The future of nations is hopeful with development and peace. The trip in Xi'an will always be in my   memory.

Good and bad manners（礼仪） make up the social rules of a country.They are not always easy to learn because they are often not written in books.Let's see some social rules in Britain.

In the past，most British women didn't go to pubs（酒吧） because it was not considered good behavior for a woman.Now both women and men can drink freely in pubs.

Visitors to Britain often see British people wait in line in public places.It is considered impolite to get on a bus without waiting your turn in line.And if you don't wait your turn，the other people in line will probably warn you to line up loudly.

In some countries it is considered bad manners to eat in the street.However，in Britain it is common to see people having a snack while walking down the road.

British people used to be surprised to see young children in restaurants in the evening because children were not usually taken out to restaurants at night.These days children are playing a more active role and they are now accepted in many restaurants at night.

In recent years，many British companies have banned smoking in their offices and even in the whole buildings.Smoking is also banned on the London Underground，in cinemas and theaters and on most buses.It can be seen less and less in public places.It is also considered bad manners to smoke in someone's house without asking the owner.

Social rules are an important part of every country.The British have an expression for these"unwritten rules"：When in Rome，do as the Romans do.

In 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping offered to build a Silk Road Economic Belt (经济带) and a 21st Century Maritime (海上) Silk Road, which became known as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI, "一带一路"倡议). The BRI has brought cultures together for over ten years. As the BRI continues to bring the world together, young people from the Belt and Road countries can see how it continues to develop and have a deeper understanding of it. We did a survey of 125 Chinese students. The following survey is about BRI in the eyes of the students. The diagrams (图表) below show the results.

I moved here three years ago, and because of my business, I needed to fly both to China and the United States often. When I traveled alone, I felt lonely because I didn't speak English well. I made a decision that I had to learn English well.

I came to Rita Colina's class at the Chinese Community Center in Houston. Before the class, I always walked away when I met any foreigner. It's completely different now. I try to communicate with Americans in English by myself. Now I like to talk to foreigners. Not only the life becomes more flexible, but also I really love to live here.

I learn English in four ways:

First of all, I listen to what the teacher teaches in class. Then I keep speaking during the class.

Second, I do my homework right away when I get home. I memorize at least five vocabulary words every day.

Third, I listen to American radio stations, and I watch the TV news and other American programs with my family every day. I ask them whatever I don't know.

Finally, I go to American stores as often as possible so I will have more chances to learn more new words, and find any chance to talk to Americans in English.

Anyway, the most important thing is not to be afraid to open your mouth. It doesn't matter even though you speak incorrectly. It's the key, you know.

Simon didn't get on well with his parents in the past. He hardly {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(talk)to them, because they always compared him with his sister Sarah. They thought Sarah studied {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(hard)than Simon. Simon was not happy with that.

Later, Simon wanted to show his parents that he could do things as well {#blank#}3{#/blank#}his sister.Then he started to spend most of his free time in the art room. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (luck), the art teacher Miss Green taught Simon a lot. She tried to help bring out the best in {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(he).

One day,Simon told Miss Green about his problem. Miss Green said to Simon,"Your works are {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(good)than many children's. You can take part in a painting {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(compete).Your parents will know how great you are!"So Simon did it.

After {#blank#}8{#/blank#} few weeks, the result came out. Simon was very excited {#blank#}9{#/blank#} he won first place. His parents felt surprised. Then they were happy for Simon. They realized (认识到)that different {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(kid)were good at different things.

In our daily life, we usually use direct questions to ask for information we do not know. Direct questions are either yes or no questions such as "Are you married?" or information questions such as "Where do you live?"

It's OK to ask your friends or someone you know well direct questions, but such questions can seem unfriendly at times, especially when you are asking a stranger. For example, if you come up to someone and ask "What time is it?" or "Can you move?", he or she may refuse to help you. It is certainly right to ask questions in this way, but it's very common to make these kinds of questions more polite by adding "Excuse me" or "Pardon me" to begin your questions. "Excuse me, when does the bus leave?" or "Pardon me, may I sit here?" sounds more polite.

It's also possible to use "can" in more informal （非正式的） situations. In the past, people used" can" when asking for something, but only to speak about abilities. In the UK, some English teaching materials from Cambridge University come with the phrase （短语） "Can you lend me…" "Can I have...", etc. In the US, this form is still considered to be not true, especially for written English, and "May I have..." is better. Questions with "can" will sound more polite by using "could": "Pardon me, could you help me?"

"Would" can also be used to make questions more polite. "Would you let me borrow your pencil?" is also polite.

Another way of making direct questions more polite is to add "please" at the end of the questions, We can say "Could you help me, please?" But notice this, "please" should not appear at the beginning of the questions.
