Give water, save lives

A bottle of water may not seem like much to you, but thousands of bottles will be of great help for people who live in drought-hit(遭受旱灾) areas in China.

Since last autumn, there has been very little rain in Southwest China. Some places, especially in Yunnan, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, have experienced a serious drought. Crops (庄稼) died, the land cracked(裂开), and wells (井) and rivers dried up. More than 20 million people are having difficulty in finding safe drinking water.

After learning about the drought, many people around the country helped by giving water, money and other things.

Last week, every member of the Communist Youth League (共青团员) and Young Pioneers(少先队员) were encouraged to give one bottle of water to the drought-hit areas. Students in primary schools and middle schools quickly joined the activity. In Yuhua Primary School in Xi' an, 900 students bought over 1,000 bottles of water with their pocket money. They also wrote their wishes on the bottles.

The serious drought has also made students realize the importance of saving water. Students from Nanshan Middle School in Huizhou, Guangdong went on the street to tell people to take part in water-saving activities.

"I've heard that some children in drought-hit areas don't have enough drinking water. They have to drink muddy ( 含有泥土的 ) water. I feel really sad about that," said one student. "I decide to take a shower twice a week instead of every day to save water," he said.

Joe Campbell is 7 years old. He has three sisters and no brothers. His father often takes him to play sports on Saturdays and Sundays. But Joe doesn't t think that is interesting.

All of Joe's sisters take ballet classes on the weekend. And Joe is also interested in dancing. He wants to go to learn ballet with his sisters. But his father thinks he is joking(开玩笑). "You know, you should go to join a football or basketball club," his father says. This makes Joe sad because his father doesn't allow him to do what he wants to.

When Joe's sisters see it, they want to help him, Every night, they teach Joe how to dance. At the school music festival, Joe dances with his sisters, and they live a wonderful performance(表演). His father watches it and he is proud of(为……骄傲)them. He knows Joe is doing the right thing.

So will all these things come true? "All these will come true, even better," says a scientist. I couldn't agree more with the scientist. I am looking forward to the new life.

My middle school life is meaningful and valuable.

Yang Weiyun, over 70 years old, is teaching pinyin on TikTok. She also 1 reading and writing. Mrs Yang used to be a Chinese teacher at a primary school for about 30 years and a kindergarten (幼儿园) head for 2 20 years. 

After retiring (退休), Mrs Yang wanted to do 3 meaningful. Then she got the  4 of using the Internet to give lessons. Soon she 5 teaching pinyin on TikTok. At first, her classes were for kindergarten kids who will go to 6 schools next year. However, she 7 found there were more and more adults (成年人) in her" class". And most of them weren't8 to read or write.

"Many adults didn't have any 9 to go to school when they were young. They were afraid to go to new places. They couldn't teach their children at all 10 they knew few characters (汉字). I wanted to give them a new starting point," Mrs Yang said. So she began to teach reading and writing. Most of the adult students are 11 during the day, so they may have no time to have the lesson at 8:30 am. Mrs Yang gives 12 lessons every day. One starts at 8:30 am and the other starts at 8:30 pm. 

Zhang Mei is one of the adult students. She was born 13 the countryside and never went to school. After moving to the city, she found the life really 14 . She often got lost and couldn't find better jobs. Now she can write her name and she 15 more than 300 Chinese characters. She also finds a nice job.
