It was nearly seven o'clock, when a man walked into a bar, ordered a drink and turned to watch the television.

    The seven o'clock news was on and it was showing a man standing on top of a tall building. He was looking down at the crowd of people below.

    On the ground, a police officer with a megaphone(扩音器)was trying to tell him not to jump.

    "Let's talk about your problem," the police officer was saying. "Perhaps we can help you."

    The man turned to the bartender(酒吧侍者)and said, "I bet you a hundred dollars he doesn't jump.

    The bartender looked at him. "You're offering me a hundred dollars if he jumps? Is that right?"

    "Yes. I don't think he'll jump."

    The bartender smiled. "OK. You've got a bet."

    The man turned back to the TV and watched it carefully. The bartender, however, did not seem to be very interested. He continued washing glasses and serving the other customers.

    Then, after about five minutes, the man on the building threw himself off the building and fell to the ground.

    The man in the bar turned to the bartender.

    "He jumped," he said. "You win."

    He held out a hundred dollar bill to the bartender, but the bartender would not take it.

    "I can't take your money," he said. "I knew I couldn't lose. That story was on the six o'clock news. I saw him jump."

    "Well, yes, so did I," the man said, "but I didn't think he'd do such a stupid thing twice."

My Best Friend And I

Making new friends can be difficult, especially if you are a child in a new neighborhood. It may seem like everyone else has a friend to sit with or to talk to. Don't worry:if you're a nice person, you can make friends,too. 

Step 1. Decide what kind of people you want to play with. Choose (选择) wisely, because you'll probably become like them. Pick children that are nice to other people. 

Step 2. Smile and say something nice to the person you want to be your friend. If you like a person's shoes or think a girl is good at basketball, just say so. Everyone likes compliments. 

Step 3. Join clubs and teams. If you like sports, try out for some. Put yourself in situations where you are around many children that enjoy the same activities as you. It's easier to develop (发展) friendships when you have the same hobbies. 

Step 4. Ask questions whenever it's appropriate(适当的). People love to talk about themselves. Be careful not to ask too personal questions or ask someone too many questions. But asking one or two questions shows you're interested in him or her.

Bullying is a sad reality that has affected many kids. What is worse about it is that bullying can lead to more result s such as lowered self-respect, poor performance and self-harm among kids. Here are a few anti-bullying dos and don'ts for you. 

·Walk away from a bully and tell an adult. It's OK to be scared and ask for help. 

·Don't look down when a bully says something. Stand tall and look into the bully's eyes. 

·Take a moment to calm down before responding to a bully. It is tough to think straight, and recall the reply you've practised with your parents, if you're scared. 

·Speak clearly without making the bully angry, say, "I want you to stop laughing at me"

·Use your best poker face (扑克脸). The less scared or affected you look, the less the bully will do. 

·Get between a bully and his/ her target. Go and stand beside a child who is being bullied. Turn him/ her away from the bully, and walk with him/ her towards an adult. 

·Avoid being alone with a bully. Bullying usually happens where adults are not present, so you should avoid empty hall ways, bathrooms or areas of the playground with bad sight lines to an adult. Try to sit near the front of the bus, and be near the cafeteria manager at lunch time.
