Abingdon School Open Day

    The Open Day this year will be on Saturday, 1 October 2011. The Open Day is for all the family, with activities and displays(展示) about all aspects(方面) of the school. All the teachers, students and parents will attend. The day starts at 9:30 a. m. and finishes at 2:30 p.m.  You are welcome to arrive at any time during the lessons in the morning and afternoon. Please read the outline of Open Day events.

    If you can't come to the Open Day, that's all right. There are many other chances(机会) to visit Abingdon School

    St Helen School and St Katharine School Open Day will be on the same date, so you can also visit those two.

    Parking at the school on the Open Day may be limited(有限的), so you can also park your cars in Lotus Supermarket's car park.  It's just a three-minute walk away.

First Man is a picture book, it tells the story of Yang Liwei and his trip to space.

As we all know, Yang Liwei is China's first astronaut to fly into space. Yang was born on June, 21st, 1965 in the city of Huludao, Liaoning province. When he was 38 years old, he took Shenzhou-5 spaceship to space.

To help people get to know the Chinese space hero better and learn about his trip to space, the picture book was born. It is based on Yang's autobiography（自传）Long March to Space. In 2021, One Day in Space, a passage from Yang's book, was included in the seventh-grade textbook in Chinese middle schools.

Yang Liwei left for space at 9:00 on the morning of October 15th, 2003 and came back to the earth at 6:23 on the afternoon of October 16th. During the 21-hour stay in space, he flew around the earth 14 times. With great pictures and simple words, the book tells an exciting story as well as space science in an interesting way. From the book, we know that it is really ____ for people to travel in space. There is no gravity（重力）in space, so people don't feel comfortable. Yang's story tells us that nothing is impossible for a willing heart.

Wu Xiaoxi from the BSTP（北京科技出版社）came up with the idea of writing such a book. "There is a surprise in the book for readers-a picture of a rabbit looking at the moon," Wu says. "China plans to send people to the moon by 2030．We hope to write nice picture books at that time."

 Do you know the Monkey Buffet(猴子自助餐) Festival? It is on the last Sunday of November. It is a great day for monkeys in Thailand. The festival is 35 years old. To thank monkeys, people have this special festival.

 On that day every year, people put lots of fruit, vegetables, cakes and even drinks on the tables outside. They are all for monkeys. Many people come to see the monkeys on that day.

During the festival, there are a lot of interesting activities about monkeys. Young people always dress(穿着) like monkeys and they play some music on the street.

 Monkeys eat fruit, vegetables and eggs. Monkeys are clever(聪明的). Do you think so?

After-school clubs

Do you want to make your after-school life more colourful? Here are some good choices for you. 

Outdoor Club

Sitting in a classroom for eight hours a day can be tiring.  How about joining an outdoor club? Activities like skiing and picnicking are possible choices.  You can take part in some of them to enjoy the adventures (冒险). 

Creative (创造性的) Writing Club

Want to write short stories and be the next J.  K.  Rowling? A writing club is a good choice for you.  Your writing skills will really improve because you can get helpful advice from other club members. 

Robotics Club

Machine learning and AI are hot topics today.  Do you want to know more about them? Join the club and our leader Mr.  Lu will help you find your talent (天赋) in this field.  It might even help you get a good job. 

Soup Kitchen Club

In this club, our leader Mr.  Zhang will show you how to cook delicious soup.  You can work at a food bank or a soup kitchen.  You will spend a few hours at a time giving food to people who really need it.  It's very helpful. 

①Many years ago people took tests to show how much they knew. Today students still take many different kinds of tests.

②Throughout history, tests have been a kind of measuring tool (测量工具). They measure how students are learning, as well as how teachers are teaching. Teachers can use tests as a way to see if their teaching are working. If students are doing poorly on tests, teachers can change how they' re teaching to help students understand things more clearly.

③Many teachers understand that tests can actually help students learn. Testing has been believed to help students remember what they have been taught. Tests serve as a way for students to find gaps in their understanding. Once they fill those gaps, they can do better on the next test.

④However, testing isn't always a good thing. For some students, this causes(造成)a lot of worries because they want to do well. Tests can make some students lose sleep because they' re studying for a long time or because they' re afraid of doing poorly.

⑤Besides, some people think that tests are not always a good way to measure how smart students are. For example, if Lucy is sick the day of a test, she might do poorly on the test when she is actually smart. Tests only look at one day in her life, but not how she does in school over a long time.
