I'm smaller than everyone else my age. When I walk in the halls at school, I have to squeeze in between the bigger kids to get by. At the playground, sometimes even little kids try to boss me around. Mia, my best friend, is so tall that when she walks, I have to jog to keep up with her.

I used to try to make myself taller whenever I could, but I was the same height every time. Frustrating! "Don't worry," Mum always said. "Being small has its advantages." "Really? I could never notice any."

One day, Mrs. Alvarez announced to the class that we'd be putting on a spring play. I practiced all the lines. But at the audition, when I walked up to the stage, Mrs. Alvarez cried, "You'll be perfect as the elf! You're just the right size for the costume." I never even got a chance to deliver the lines I'd practiced. Back home I grumbled(咕哝) to Mum that I had been made an elf. But she bet I would be the best elf. To please her, I went to rehearsals, though I only had two lines.

Mia got the lead role — a girl wandering through a magical fairy forest in search of her lost dog. In the last scene, she finds a box under a giant mushroom, and when she opens it, her dog jumps out. Mrs. Alvarez's dog, Prince, played the dog role. She brought him to all the rehearsals, and when he wasn't onstage, we got to play with him, but he seemed to like me best.

The night of the show, my first line came early. Since my only other line was toward the end, I waited offstage, playing with Prince. Finally, the grand end came, and Prince was brought onstage inside the box. But the box was found empty. Mrs. Alvarez said, "A burst of noise frightened him away. I see him under the stage!"

注意:1)续写词数应为150字左右;2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

"How can we get Prince out from beneath the stage?" Mrs. Alvarez asked.

Having no other ideas, Mrs. Alvarez nodded to me.

On February 4, while working on a construction site in Gratiot County, Michigan, Hansen heard terrified screams coming from nearby. He stopped his work and looked up. Standing on the back porch(门廊) of the home next door was a little boy yelling "Help!" while four fierce dogs barked madly in a circle below him.

At first, Hansen thought it was just a dog fight. Then alarm bells went off in his head. "The noises they made sounded like what dogs do when they're killing something," he says. His thought proved right when another young boy suddenly popped up in the middle of the dogs, and Hansen watched in horror as they sank in their teeth and threw him across the grass like a small doll.

"He was shirtless and covered in blood, and those dogs were trying to kill him." says Hansen.

Hansen raced across the grass, jumped the fence, and landed in the neighbor's yard. He shouted at the dogs, but they ignored him. Then he displayed the most aggression that he could manage, yelling louder until they let go just long enough for Hansen to catch eight-year-old Ethan Nokes around the stomach and bear-hug him. "I couldn't hold him under his armpits(腋窝), which would have made it easier to run, because they were torn wide open," says Hansen.

As Hansen dashed across the yard, the dogs bounced on him, biting at Ethan. Hansen rushed onto the steps. So did the dogs. When he reached the top, he pulled on a door; it wouldn't open. "A dog grabbed Ethan's foot, and I thought they were going to get him back from me," he says.

Grandpa Cecil Rodgers has narrowly escaped a phone scam (欺骗). It all began with a telephone call…

Cecil is an elderly man from Cincinnati, Ohio, who was looking forward to spending time with his family over the holidays. They were all coming to visit him at his Elmwood Place home, including his adult grandson David. One afternoon, while napping in bed, he was awakened by the sharp ringing of his telephone.

"Who will ring me up at this time?" He wondered. Peering towards the phone, he hesitantly picked it up. From the receiver came an urgent voice. "Grandpa, this is David. I am in trouble." Before Cecil could ask him any question, he continued, on and off, half crying, "I hit a woman's car and she was seven months pregnant. And they charged me with drunken driving and I'm in prison..." He sobbed loudly. His voice was so broken that Cecil could hardly match it with the gentle and warm voice of his grandson. Poor David! He must be suffering! Cecil panicked immediately.

Without more detailed communication, the phone passed suddenly to another person— David's lawyer who had a deeper voice. Seemingly, he understood Cecil's anxiety and attempted to comfort him with a solution. "Now the only way to help David is to go to Wal-Mart and transfer $2,300 to another store. I would pick up the money and then use it to post David's bail (保释金)." "I am sure everything would be OK as long as the money is in place," he added. Ultimately, he lowered his voice, "Don't tell anybody. You don't want to make your grandson look ugly in your neighborhood." The lawyer hung up even before Cecil could give an answer.

注意:1)续写词数应为 150 左右;

2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

……

The lucky part of Cecil's day was when he stepped into cashier (收银员) Audrella's line in Wal-Mart.
