Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather's house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa's place.

    This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather's village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.

    Grandpa's house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door--one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.

    One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed（辗转）and turned in bed. Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung（附着）to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, “It's an earthquake! It's an earthquake!" They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe.

    Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, “The sea is rising! The sea is rising." The villagers started running away from the beach. Sami watched dumbstruck（呆若木鸡）.

    The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are!" He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.

    Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near." He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging（汹涌） in.

    Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.

    It was a beautiful morning. I was in the middle of a busy day, with my mind on what I had to do next. As I drove along a busy street. I noticed a young boy walking out from the entrance of an apartment complex(公寓群) on the other side of the street.

    I couldn't see beyond the entrance with trees and bushes shading it but I hoped that his family was there, about to appear behind him. The boy was young, maybe four years old, and it was a strange sight to see him alone near this busy street, even if just for a little while. I continued to look behind me but I didn't see anyone else coming out to join him as cars ran swiftly past him. Then, I saw him turning around and running back toward the entrance. I smiled in relief, as I hoped that he was heading back towards his family.

    Still, I felt I should check to be sure he was safe and did a U-turn as soon as I was able to. As I drove back to where I first saw him, I was expecting to see him safe, with his family around him. Instead, as I got closer, I saw that he had changed directions again, crossed the median(隔离带)and was quickly running in the opposite direction of the apartment buildings. I pulled my car over quickly and as I did so, all the cars on both sides of the street suddenly stopped as well, as if just realizing the potential danger of the situation.

    I crossed the street and went up to him. He stopped as I approached, looking at me cautiously and backed away slightly towards the road. I didn't want to scare him so I bent down a bit. Seeing a piece of paper in his hand, I asked him where his parents were and why he was there but he did not answer. Instead, he ran away from me along the median.

Edward quickly understood that these people were poor and in a very difficult situation and required some help. He took out his dollars, and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife.

    How their eyes sparkled (闪耀)with gratitude! They said something in their language, which doubtlessly meant, "We thank you a thousand times, and will remember you forever."

    When Edward came home, his father asked what books he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up. "I have bought no books," said he, "I gave my money to some poor people, who seemed to be very hungry."

When I was 17, a boy broke my heart. The night he called for the last time, I cried myself to sleep. When I awoke in the morning, there was a line of words on my mirror in red lipstick. I thought about that quotation from Emerson for a long time, and until my heart healed and went to get the glass cleaned, my mother knew everything was all right again. One month before my high school graduation, my father died of a heart attack. My feelings ranged from grief to abandonment, fear and overwhelming anger; my dad was missing some of the most important events in my life. I became completely uninterested in my coming graduation, the play and the prom. But my mother, in the midst of her own grief, would not hear of my skipping any of those things.

The day before my father died, my mother and I had gone shopping for a prom dress. We'd found a spectacular, and impressive one, with yards and yards of dotted Swiss in red, white and blue.

My family moved from Taiwan to a small town in central Georgia, where my dad got a visa for his family and a job. I had just learned English, and from what little I could gather from my friends, Santa Claus would come down one's chimney(烟囱) and put toys in one's stocking on Christmas Eve! And for the first time, I woke up before everyone else in the early morning. Then I headed straight to the fireplace and was even ready for what to say after seeing the gift. However, what happened next was the least thing I wanted to mention. On the nail was the empty and lonely sock. I was hit with the reality of the empty sock and the biggest lie ever told. I tried my best to hold back my tears but failed. Bursting into tears, I quickly took down the sock and stuffed it in the back of a drawer.

Every December since then, the topic of Christmas memories would unavoidably come up, and I would amuse my friends with my poor-little-me story. I had to make it as funny as possible, or else I would cry once again. I didn't know whether any of my audience ever noticed the sparkling tears hidden in my eyes. 

How could I know that Santa was just late？Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve, I heard a knock on the door when I was watching TV. Unwillingly, I dragged my feet(拖着脚步) and opened the door.

She smiled slightly," I gave them to the receptionist(前台接待员). ""What?" She laughed at my confusion. "I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially who hasn't gotten any in a while."

I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again," Did you leave your name?" To this she answered instantly," No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me. "

Suddenly, still thinking about Mom's deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn't know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few along the way.
