The Chinese dragon is one of the most important parts in Chinese culture. Chinese dragons look like a combination (结合体) of many animals such as snakes, fish and deer in Chinese culture. They have two horns (角) and a long body. They also have fantastic powers—they can fly in the sky, swim in the sea and can even make rain. 

The Chinese dragon is a symbol of strength and good luck. The emperors of ancient China loved dragons. Their clothes were covered with pictures of dragons. 

We are proud to call ourselves the "descendants (传人) of the dragon". In Chinese, excellent people are often called "dragons". A number of Chinese sayings talk about dragons. For example, "Hope one's child will become a dragon" means hoping he or she will be successful. 

It is said that people born in the Year of the Dragon are creative, active, brave and it's easier for them to get angry. There are also some traditional festivals about dragons in China, such as the Dragon Head-raising Day and the Dragon Boat Festival. The festivals are celebrated differently by us. These two festival s come every year, but the Year of the Dragon comes every twelve years. 

People who are interested in Chinese culture may study dragons and it will be helpful for them to have a better understanding of Chinese culture. As the "descendants of the dragon", it is our duty to work together to pass our traditional culture on to more and more people.

I Love My Class

Hello! I'm Li Ming from Class 1, Grade 7, Hongqi Middle School.

There are about 5,000 different kinds of ladybugs(瓢虫) in the world. They come in many different colors. Their bright colors warn other animals or insects not to eat them. Ladybugs taste bad. A bird or a frog that eats a ladybug will remember the bright colors and it will not eat another ladybug with the same colors again. When ladybugs are in danger, they will give out a fluid(液体) that tastes terrible.

In many cultures, the ladybug is considered to be a symbol of good luck. Most ladybugs are kind to humans. They eat other insects which des troy crops. One ladybug can eat up to 5,000 insects in its lifetime.

Ladybugs have six short legs. They live in many different places, including green lands, forests, cities, the countryside and along rivers. Different ladybugs have different spots(点). Some of them don't have spots at all. The most common kind in North America is the 7- spotted ladybug. The 7- spotted ladybugs are the most active from spring to autumn. When the weather turns cold, they look for a warm place to sleep, such as under stones or in houses.

Sammie Vance, 14, knows there's nothing worse than feeling left out. For years, she's been helping kids who feel lonely make friends. 

What she was doing was running the Buddy Bench(伙伴长 椅 )program. She started it when she was in the third grade, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The idea was that anyone at school who was feeling lonely could sit on the"buddy bench". That let other kids know someone needed a friend. "It's really helpful to have other people be able to notice you, "Sammie says. 

The idea quickly caught on (流行起来). The bench brought kids together. Since then, Sammie has helped communities all over the country set up buddy benches. "It means a lot to me, "she says, and this is making a difference in people's lives. "

Sammie got the idea for the Buddy Bench program at summer camp in 2017. She thought it would be cool to have a buddy bench in her school, so when she got home, she presented the idea to her principal(校长), her teachers, and her parents. 

Getting approval(批准)for the project was just the first step. "There have been a lot of small challenges, like money, "Sammie says. 

To reduce costs and be eco-friendly(环保的), she asked her community to collect bottle caps. Soon Sammie was getting caps from people in 50 states. She even got them from people in Germany, the Netherlands, and other countries. In the end, she collected more than 1, 200 pounds of bottle caps. A company was able to make these into three benches. 

Sammie says the effort has helped her overcome personal challenges. "I used to be really, really shy, "she says. I'm much more outgoing now. What Sammie's work shows is that we don't have to be an adult to make a difference. Even small acts of kindness can be powerful. She says, "Just be kind, in general. "
