From the Other Side

Lara and Tara are twins. They look like each other, but they are very different in everything else. For example, hot food is Lara's favorite, and Tara has a sweet choice.

However, this isn't the problem with the twin girls. They always argues that the opposite one was wrong. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}, while Tara thought mornings were fresh and it was difficult to stay up till midnight.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#} To put an end to their fights, their parents decided to create a small drama. They wanted the girls to understand that they were both correct from their own point of view. Their parents covered the girl's eyes with black ribbons (带、条), and brought them to the dining room. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Lara was asked to stand on one side of the board and Tara on the other. They couldn't see the other side of it. When the ribbons were taken away, they were surprised to see a huge board between them.

Now, their father asked Lara, "What's the color of the board?" She replied, "It's black!" {#blank#}4{#/blank#} She replied, "It's white!" The two girls began to argue again. While Lara was confident it was black, Tara was sure it was white. Then, they were asked to exchange (交换) their places. They couldn't believe their eyes. Tara, who insisted (坚持) it was a white board, saw a black one. Similarly, Lara, who argued the board was black, was surprised to see a white one. They understood that each of them was right in her own view. Most of us are like Lara and Tara. We are right most times, but insist that others are wrong!

Whenever my child caused me to change my schedule, I thought to myself "We don't have time for this. "

Therefore, the two words I most commonly spoke to my child were: "Hurry up. " But my promise to  1 was made almost three years ago, and I began my journey to grasp what 2  in life. 

My younger daughter is my living reminder of why I must keep trying to slow down. 

The two of us had taken a bike ride to the supermarket.  After buying an ice cream for my daughter, she sat down at a table 3 looking at the ice cream she held in her hand.  Suddenly a look of worry appeared upon her face. "Do I have to rush, Mama?"

I nearly cried. Perhaps the pains of a  4  life don't ever completely disappear, I thought sadly.  As my child looked up at me waiting to know whether she could take her time, I knew I had a choice.  I could sit there in sorrow thinking about the number of times when I told my child to rush through life  5  the fact that today I'm trying to do things differently. I chose to live in today. 

"You don't have to rush," I said  6 .  Her whole face immediately brightened and her shoulders    relaxed. And so we sat side-by-side talking.  There were even moments when we sat in  7 just smiling at each other. 

When she got to the last bite, she held out the ice cream for me.  "I  8  the last bite for you, Mama. "My daughter said proudly. I realized I just got the deal of a lifetime.  I gave my child a little time. 

9 , she gave me her last bite, also reminded me that things taste sweeter and love comes 10 when you stop rushing through life. 

In a busy international business (商务) meeting, a group of businessmen from different countries came together to discuss possible working partnership. Among them were Sarah, an American manager, and Li, a Chinese businessman. They had difficulty 1 each other. 

As the meeting continued, Li kept quiet all the time, so Sarah thought Li wasn't interested. Sarah decided to break the ice by offering a strong hand shake to express her 2 . However, Li found her handshake was too strong. This made him feel 3 because he was used to shaking hands softly.

Mao Junfang is a bamboo craftsman(手艺人). When he was 17, he began to 1 how to make bamboo weaving crafts(竹编). He finished his learning two years later 2 he started to sell bamboo crafts.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(在……期间) the Qing Dynasty(1644—1911), Yangzhou was a center for business and {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(文化). Many artists lived there. Among these artists was a special group of eight painters. They were all from poor families but they were truly {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(有才能的). They had their {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(自己的) styles(风格) and their paintings were mirrors of {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(普通的) lives. Their paintings touched many people's{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (内心). They became quite famous and {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(百) of rich traders went to buy their paintings. So the other painters disliked them and called them"Yangzhou baguai". Some {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(甚至) called them"choubaguai". Although it wasn't a nice name, people {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(相信) their paintings were great.

 Today, "Yangzhou baguai" is still used to refer to the eight painters, but"Choubaguai" now {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (失去) its original meaning and just refers to ugly people in general.

The Earth is the energetic planet that we call home. It was formed over 4.5 billion years ago. The Earth might seem like a rock ball, but it's actually made up of four different parts.

The inner core (核心) is at the centre of the Earth. It's a hard ball of hot metal, about 70 per cent the size of the Moon. The temperature of the inner core can be as high as 5,400℃ and it's the hottest part of the Earth. The outer core circles (环绕) the inner core. Unlike the inner core, it is a liquid (液体的) layer, made mostly of iron. It's almost as hot as the inner core.

The mantle (地幔) is a thick layer. It circles the outer core and is about 2,900 kilometres thick, making it the Earth's deepest part. The mantle is mostly made of rock, but it also includes some magma (岩浆). The magma melted (融化) under high heat and pressure. It finally comes out from volcanoes.

We live on Earth's crust (地壳), a layer of rock about 30 kilometres thick. That might seem thick, but it's actually very thin, considering the size of Earth. There are two types of crusts: the mainland crust, which carries land, and the oceanic crust, which carries water. The thinnest parts of the crust are under the oceans, and the thickest parts are under the land. The Earth's crust is divided into large plates. Scientists believe that these plates are moving all the time, which explains how the world looks.
