Last month, calls were made to raise the taxes for sugary drinks. This shows growing worry over the amount of sugar that kids are taking in through cola, juices and other beverages(饮料),a new study has found that one in five children did not drink any water on a given day﹣and that those kids took in more calories(卡路里)from sweetened beverages than kids who did drink water.
The study surveyed on 8,400 children across the country between the ages of 2 and 19. Researchers found that around 20 percent of children are reported drinking no water throughout the day. And they took in almost twice as many calories than kids who did drink some water. Overall, the children drank 132 calories of colas and other sugary beverages per day. That number dropped to 112 calories if they drank any water. But kids who didn't drink any water at all took in an average of 210 calories from sweetened drinks.
This can cause a lot of problems. "Those calories don't provide much nutrition (营养) and they can add up," according to professor Asher, sugary drinks have been linked to a number of diseases, such as childhood obesity, dental problems and high cholesterol. "I've seen 6﹣year﹣olds with high cholesterol and teenagers with Type 2 diabetes," said Natalie
"Kids should take in water every single day,and the first beverage choice for kids should be water," according to Natalie. "Because if they're not drinking water, like sugar﹣sweetened beverages, that are less healthy and have more calories. " Adults should take up their responsibility to encourage kids to drink water so that they don't take in something less healthful. And things need to be done to ensure childhood health.
A group of US high school students has changed an empty lot(一块空地) into a place of hope. The students go to Buchtel High School in Akron, Ohio. The empty lot was full of grass in the past. They wanted it to become a space that could be better for the mental(心理的) health of people living nearby.
After weeks of hard working, now the lot is a different place. There is a wood walkway leading to a purple bench(长椅). A few beautiful plants are already in the ground. There is also a hopscotch(跳房子游戏) board painted bright blue. On a back fence, you can see a wall painting with words like"Love" and"Peace" and the students' handprints on it.
The students painted the bench purple because it is a relaxing color. They think kids can go there to sit together, make friends and stay out of difficulties.
The hopscotch board was for a group of eight to ten school-age kids who live nearby. The students heard nowhere to play.
"The lot gives the people nearby a little hope and a little beauty, " said Lyle Jenkins, a member of the Neighborhood Network. "A lot of people love the place and have great hopes for things getting better. "

A New School My room slowly lightens, things start to appear(出现). Busy neighborhood sounds soon get to my ear. Dogs sound out with loud, joyful barks. Birds sing morning songs. I think they are larks(百灵鸟). I rise from my bed to begin the day. I dress, have breakfast, then I'm on my way. At the corner, my friends and I wait for our bus. We get on right away; there's never a fuss(大吵大闹). Our school's up ahead, the flag's in our sight. We go to read, do numbers, and write. I find my desk. My class has begun. I'm glad to be here--learning is fun! |
