For a long time we have learned about the 3Rs, but now there are two more in the mix.5Rs are Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle, in that order. The order of the Rs is also important. The closer to the start of the list, the more important it is. Let's start from our lifestyles! 

Refuse

Our lives are full of things we don't need, and each of them has an environmental cost. Think it over when buying. Just deciding not to spend $100 on things our family doesn't want can save 100kg greenhouse gas pollution! 

Reduce

To reduce is to use fewer resources. Before buying for children, give yourself at least a day or two to cool off. Only buy what is necessary to children. Always ask your children to turn off the lights or computers when they are not using them. 

Reuse

Almost everything we throw away in our daily lives will become litter and harm the planet in other ways. We can save resources by reusing. Reuse means using again. Have you given away your children's clothes that they can't wear to others? Or, we can use the cloth napkins and empty cans once again or more. 

Repurpose

Simply take something you are no longer using and change it for another more practical use. Think, help your children use old newspapers for art projects. 

Recycle

To recycle is to make new things from old things. In our home, anything made from metal, wood, paper and most plastics is possible to be recycled. 

Otters (水獭) are cute water animals. These days, keeping otters as pets is getting popular. In Japan, some "otter cafés (咖啡馆)" are open for business. People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take funny videos. These photos and videos posted online have interested more people to buy otters as pets. 

However, these enjoyable photos and videos hide the damage (损害) that the online trade is doing to otters. In fact, wild otters are facing many threats—they have long been hunted for their coats; in some places, fishermen have been killing otters in order to stop them from eating fish; and now, the online pet trade has become another big problem for otters. 

In the wild, baby otters usually stay with their mothers during their first year of life. According to a report, 70% of the otters sold online are under one year old. These baby otters have been stolen from their mothers. When they are kept as pets by humans, they do not live full and natural lives. 

Otters are very social. They live in family groups of up to 15 in the wild. Keeping an otter as a pet can make it very sad and lonely. These animals also need enough space to swim. Their owners' bathtubs (浴缸) or pools are nowhere near as large as the bodies of water in the wild. 

On the other hand, otters simply don't make good pets. They have a very special fishy smell. If they are kept indoors, they will leave a lot of waste around the house. This would make the smell even more unpleasant. Besides, when otters are unhappy, they will make loud noises and even attack (攻击) people. If a person is hurt by an otter, he or she needs to go to hospital at once. 

So, we should stop the otter pet trade and never share photos and videos about them online.

Do you know sugar painting? It is one of China's most popular folk art {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. 

It is said that Chen Zi'ang, a great poet in the Tang Dynasty, created sugar painting. Chen liked brown sugar, but{#blank#}2{#/blank#} way of eating it was different from others'. He first melted (使熔化) the sugar {#blank#}3{#/blank#} heating it. Then he shaped the hot sugar into animals, flowers, plants, and so on. Once the sugar cooled down, it {#blank#}4{#/blank#} sweet artworks. 

One day, Chen made a nice sugar creation. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} he was admiring it, the little prince passed by. He was {#blank#}6{#/blank#} to see the special sugar and took it away. Back in the palace, the little prince ate the sugar and cried for more, which upset the emperor. The emperor ordered Chen to come to the palace and show{#blank#}7{#/blank#} he made it. 

Soon Chen completed a(n) {#blank#}8{#/blank#} sugar coin. The emperor thought it was an interesting {#blank#}9{#/blank#}. He praised (表扬) Chen and offered him a job in the palace. 

From then on, the sweet snack became{#blank#}10{#/blank#} popular and it slowly developed into the art of sugar painting today. 

Last summer, I went hiking along the riverside with my mother and some friends. The river was not deep, but it was running fast. The rocks in the river were slippery(滑的). We walked carefully, but the freezing water still wet our shoes and trousers. I was getting very cold and tired. I wanted to give up, but when I saw other kids moving so fast, I felt sorry. This pushed me to keep following them, even though I was far behind. It was even more difficult during the last part of the walk. I became so tired out that I missed my steps and fell several times. But with the help of my mother and my friends, I got to my feet and kept going each time I fell.

At last, we arrived at our place by a lake. Everybody jumped into the pool. When it was my turn, I was very afraid and tried to hide around a corner. My friends noticed this and said to me, "Come on, Kevin! You can do this!" With my eyes closed, I jumped into the pool.

Although I am not as strong as my friends, I completed our walk. This experience made me realise what perseverance is, and how important it will be to everyone in life! If I exercise hard every day, I can become strong like my friends.
