The Letter That Changed a Life

A letter changed Levi Strauss's life. In 1849 gold was discovered in California. Thousands of people rushed to California in 1 of finding gold and becoming wealthy. The people hoping to find gold were foolish and greedy. One of those who headed for California was Levi Strauss. Strauss was different. Strauss was a clever, hard-working man. He was 2 a new start in life. Up to this time, Strauss had worked for his two brothers in New York City. The brothers sold clothes and blankets and other goods. Strauss planned to set up a 3 business to his brothers' in California.

Over the years, Strauss's business grew. In 1872 he got a letter from one of his customers, a tailor (裁缝) in Nevada. The tailor, Jacob Davis, had an idea for making better work pants. The pockets on work pants often tore. Jacob Davis 4 metal rivets (铆钉) to the pockets. Rivets are pieces of metal used to join things together. The rivets worked well, and the miners liked them. Davis didn't have enough money to get a patent for his invention. He also needed help making the pants. In his 5 Davis said that if they worked together, the two of them ‘‘could make a very large amount of money.''

Strauss could see that riveted work pants were a good idea. He agreed to help Davis. The two decided to make the pants. They decided to use denim cloth because it is a strong cloth that doesn't tear easily and is long lasting. 6 , the riveted denims were called ‘‘dungarees.'' Dungarees is a word from the Hindi language of India that means "rough cloth". Because they were tough and durable, dungarees were worn by thousands of farmers, miners, builders, and other workers. Later, dungarees came to be called "jeans". "Jeans" is a better name for the pants than "dungarees".

No one knows exactly when jazz was invented, or by whom. But it is {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (据说) that it began in the early 1900s. 

Jazz was a new kind of music for America and the world, and New Orleans was its birthplace. Who were the jazz pioneers? Most were blacks. This music was not {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (写) down, and at first only blacks played it. It was hard for white musicians to learn the new style. But soon they, too, were {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (弹奏) jazz. 

The popularity of this music {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (传播). From New Orleans, it traveled up the Mississippi to Chicago, then to Kansas City and New York. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (在……以前) the time of the rise of America, there were many jazz musicians, both black and white. Many of them were famous. One man was {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (好) than the rest. His name was Louis Armstrong. 

Louis Armstrong was a born musician. He was not only talented but also hard- working. He also had a good sense of {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (幽默) and a big, good- nature d smile. These personal qualities were {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (有价值的) in his rise to fame. After he became famous, he traveled around the world. It seemed that everyone wanted to hear Louis play. 

But life was not always easy, especially at the beginning. Louis Armstrong was born in 1900 in New Orleans. His father {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (从不) went to school and his mother could hardly read. When Louis was still a kid, his parents separated, and Louis lived with his mother. How hard their life was can be imagined. And yet Louis smiled through everything. He later wrote, " My whole life has been happiness. Life was there for me and I accepted it. {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (无论什么) happened has been beautiful to me. I love everybody. "

Years ago， I used to smoke after lunch or dinner. When I visited my brother，I would smoke1 and make sure that my niece(侄女) wouldn't see me2 I knew that she always did everything I did. I didn't want her to think smoking was right. However, when I went to the study room to smoke, she would3 me and watch me smoke from behind the door.

Studying too much?

Most people work or study from Monday to Friday. The weekend is usually a time of rest. But today's Chinese teenagers can hardly rest during the weekends. 

According to a survey, 24% of the Grade 8 students in Beijing have classes at the weekend. Over 40% of the middle school students have less than eight hours' sleep each night because of study. 

And this doesn't happen only in Beijing. Ji Chunying is a Grade 9 student in Guangzhou. The 14-year-old girl has to get up at 6:45am on Saturday. Then she has classes all the day. On Sunday, she goes to extra(额外)classes for math and physics. But Ji doesn't complain. She says her classmates all work very hard. 

Finding time to have fun

Zhao Ming, 13, is from Zhenjiang, Guangdong. Zhao's weekend is less busy. But he still spends Saturday in school. On Sunday, after finishing homework, he plays basketball. "I feel happy because I still have time to do the things I like. " he said. Some students are much luckier. Ding Yi, a grade 8 student from Laiwu, Shandong, is one of them. During the weekend, Ding usually gets up at 8:00a. m. . Then she spends some time doing homework. After that she is free to go shopping or watch TV. "My teacher says I don't need to push myself too much. " Learning well at school is enough, " Ding said. "I feel pretty lucky. "
