Passing the Cities through the Lens (镜头) of Women, a solo exhibition by Swiss artist Catherine Gfeller, is being held at the Swiss embassy in Beijing.

Between 2016 and 2019, Swiss artist Catherine Gfeller embarked on a journey to a number of Chinese cities, weaving a narrative as she engaged with the stories of women from different backgrounds. Her vision of the women, the challenges they confront, and their distinctive spirit are the focuses of the artist's subsequent explorations.

In the bustling streets of Guangzhou, Guangdong province, Hong Kong, Beijing and Kunming in Yunnan province, Gfeller found a means of exploring the essence of these urban landscapes by focusing her lens on women. On Saturday, the Swiss embassy in Beijing launched a solo exhibition, Passing the Cities through the Lens of Women, which spotlights the perspectives and voices of women with photographs, texts, and videos. Through her lens, Gfeller skillfully establishes a dialogue and builds a bridge between the narratives of the women and the liveliness of the cities they inhabit. 

For Gfeller, women's voices are very important in modern Chinese society. During shooting, she learned how the women perceive the new ways of life and how they find an anchor in their cities. "The moment I pressed the shutter, I felt like I became part of the city," Gfeller says.

Ambassador of Switzerland to China Jurg Burri said at the opening ceremony, "Ms Gfeller cares very much about people, especially women in cities. Women's issues are a global topic and I hope that more women's voices will be heard."

The exhibition is open to the public until the end of March. The 58-year-old artist is known for her focus on landscape photography. Using techniques like montage, collage, and superimposition, she creates unique photographic artworks.

Pooja Rai was a young architecture student in 2014 when she went with a friend to give food to a local orphanage. She was surprised at what she saw.

Kids were playing with anything they could get their hands on. One group was rolling around a broken metal pipe. Two boys were trying to play badminton, using old shoes as rackets. "Play shouldn't just be part of a rich kid's lifestyle. All kids have a right to enjoy their childhoods." Rai says.

Over the next few weeks, she talked with friends about collecting money for a playground. And that's when she thought of old tires. Around 100 million tires are thrown away in India every year. Could they reuse them as playground materials and help the environment, too?

That idea became a reality in 2015, using old tires—all cleaned, carefully looked over to make sure they are safe to use, and painted in bright colors. The following year, she created Anthill Creations, which has built 275 playgrounds across India —celebrating the power of play in public spaces. orphanages, and schools.

"Our work always begins with talks with kids about what they want from this space." says Rai. Sometimes it can take a few hours, or a few visits, until children are ready to open up. She also draws on her experience as an architect. "I found that spaces are powerful in shaping people's behavior." she says.

Most of the play spaces Rai designs feature large tire sculptures of cars, buildings, or animals, paired with more classic elements of swings and jungle gyms.

In one girl's school in Bengaluru, the children wanted their play space to be shaped into a boxing ring, with tires doubling up as punching bags. "Their teacher was unsure about it." Rai remembers. "But the girls said they didn't want people to see them as weak. They wanted to practice self-defense and grow stronger." In December 2019, this playground became a reality.

I didn't go to Santiago, Chile to look for friendship. In fact, Chile was not even on my wish list.

A mid-life crisis woman, I got a chance to study abroad. I only wanted to learn about global business, taste South American cuisine, and check "study abroad" off my wish list.

On the fifth day, I joined a group for a neighborhood work project aided by the anti-poverty (扶贫) organization. Our tasks were to build a water tower and paint the community center. Upon arrival, I couldn't believe my eyes. It was like a scene out of a horrible film. That moment redefined poverty for me because I had never seen such terrible living conditions. As advised, I showed no signs of the motional battle going on inside me.

Just as I was about to start work on painting, a request came through for a few volunteers to help Nadia, a local resident who volunteered to cook for us. I raised my hand to help because I wanted spend time with the people of the neighborhood despite my shortage of Spanish speaking skills.

Nadia had a sincere smile but not overly friendly. Even without speaking each other's language we started to learn about one another. We chatted about our children, our upbringing, shared picture of our family, struggled to instruct each other to communicate in the other's language, and laugh many times.

After we fed everybody and the dishes were washed, my day was over. But I found myself hesitant to leave. It was as if I had known her my entire life. I had not predicted the unselfishness heart I would encounter, and it was moving.

As we were waiting for the car to pick us up, Nadia showed me her plants that are well-maintains. I could see that despite the hard conditions she was passionate about life. She made me long to be stronger person. She showed me that poverty was external, but happiness was internal. I was seeking to give 100 percent for a well-intentioned cause, but I left receiving 200 percent from her.

Hummingbirds (蜂鸟) are a very important part of Mexico's ecosystem, but because of the ever-spreading city landscape, they face all sorts of serious dangers. That's where 73-year-old Catia Lattouf de Arida comes in. As a self-taught hummingbird care-taker, she devotes most of her free time and resources to nursing the tiny birds back to health. Her home in Mexico City has become known as a hummingbird hospital.

Catia's story as a hummingbird nurse began in 2011, at a very difficult moment in her life. At that time, she focused on her battle with cancer and fell into a depression (抑郁) . She was walking on the street one day when she noticed a hummingbird that had suffered a serious eye injury. The kindhearted woman took it home and named it Gucci. She managed to nurse Gucci back to health, but she said it was Gucci that saved her. Why? Because the hummingbird managed to pull her out of the sadness and loneliness that had taken over her life. 

Word of her success spread among Catia's friends, and before long some of them began bringing her injured hummingbirds. She didn't repulse them at all. She began to study the bird and their habits in order to better take care of them, and after 11 years of experience, the 73-year-old woman is considered an expert on hummingbirds. 

In order to raise awareness of the difficult situation of hummingbirds in Mexico, Catia Lattouf de Arida started posting videos of the patients in her Mexico City apartment on social media, and many of them became popular. That's when the need for her nursing services really blew up. She has cared for hundreds of hummingbirds in her 11-year career, when she has had as many as 50 of them in her apartment at any one time. She spends pretty much all her time looking after the tiny birds.

The Ocean of Stars，a symphony（交响乐） concert by Suzhou Symphony Orchestra，was staged at the Jinji Lake Concert Hall in Suzhou，Jiangsu Province，on July 15，2023. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} part of the ongoing Hua Xia Music Festival hosted by Suzhou Symphony Orchestra，the concert {#blank#}2{#/blank#} （ conduct） by Chen Xieyang，featuring famous pianist Wu Chun.Chinese music {#blank#}3{#/blank#} （ work），including The Ocean of Stars and Mulan Psalm，all by Chinese composer Guan Xia，were performed. 

The orchestra teamed up with Suzhou Silk Museum，presenting a modern show，which saw musicians of the orchestra wearing and showing {#blank#}4{#/blank#} （ tradition） Chinese silk clothes at the Jinji Lake Concert Hall.Started by conductor Chen，artistic director of the orchestra，the two-week Hua Xia Music Festival， {#blank#}5{#/blank#} was in the third year，aimed at {#blank#}6{#/blank#} （ promote）Chinese music works. 

Suzhou Symphony Orchestra also announced {#blank#}7{#/blank#} （ it） 2023-2024 season on July 15，which would close in July 2024.It was the orchestra's {#blank#}8{#/blank#} （eight） season，which gathered music artists with {#blank#}9{#/blank#} average age of 30 years old from around the world. 

The year 2023 marked the 65th anniversary of foreign relations between China and Algeria.It was the first time the orchestra {#blank#}10{#/blank#} （ perform） in Africa at the 13th International Classical Music Festival in Algiers，Algeria.

I always miss Grandma. Settled in the armchair, I often find myself 1  by the fond memories of my grandma. Her influence was as gentle as a summer breeze(微风), yet 2 . 

" Love, " she would say, " is the most 3  force in the world. " Her words were not just a lesson but a 4  light that led me through life's journey. She taught me to love 5 , to give selflessly, and to always find joy in the simple things. She effortlessly wove(编织) those 6  into the fabric of my being. 

Now, as I sit with my grandchildren, their eyes wide with 7 , I find myself recounting the  8  Grandma told me. I show them how to take care of the garden that Grandma once lovingly  9 , where each plant holds a tale of patience and growth. We bake cookies together, just as I did with Grandma, and I 10  as they embrace the joy and affection baking brings. 

The emotion of 11  swells in my heart as I realize the legacy(遗产)I now carry. Grandma's wisdom went beyond time, connecting generations and 12  the gap s that life presents. It's a legacy that I'm proud to 13  to my grandchildren. In this way, the love of a grandma becomes a timeless(永恒的)14 . 

As they grow, I hope they will remember the stories, the lessons, and the love. And one day, when they become 15  themselves, they will still remember the unique legacy of our family.
