Table Talk

As we got out of the car, our son announced, "Phones stay in the car."

"Why do you always have to tell us that?" complained our fifteen-year-old grandson.

Our son's wife winked at us and then explained, "We have a family1 that no one may bring anything electronic to the table."

We 2 our phones in the car. Even though the restaurant was filled with families, there was little noise. All I heard were a few quiet conversations and the ding of forks on plates. The 3 unnerved me. I looked around. Everyone, even the young kids, was 4 at some kind of screen. 

The silence was broken when the six of us sat down, and started talking. The waitress stood patiently and waited for our orders. When our food came, we continued to chat. 

An elderly couple at the next table were finishing their dinners and conversing quietly. I noticed that they shot us a few glances, and wondered if our constant chatter was annoying them. 

After the dessert, my son signaled the waitress for the check. She hesitated when she brought the black folder to our table. My son opened the black folder — it was5 . "You forgot the check," he told her.

"There isn't one. Someone else6 your bill — and the tip too." she said with a giggle (咯咯笑).

"Why?" asked our son, his wife and myself at once.

"They loved it that no one was connected." she continued. "They loved watching you guys7 . The old lady went on and on about how nice it was to see a family eating and talking instead of looking at ‘electric games'."

For a moment, everyone at our table was at a loss for8 . Then we all started talking at once. My son's voice rose above the others. "Where are they? We want to thank them."

"They left after you ordered dessert," the waitress replied.

We spent the next fifteen minutes discussing this goodness and camp up with a 9 . Next time we see a family eating at a restaurant 10 looking at anything electronic, we'll pay it forward, just like what happened to us.

I've had many opportunities to experience living in a foreign culture, but my first experience came in an unexpected place—my own country. When I was 20, I got an internship (实习职位) in New York City. It was my first time to 1 outside of my home state of Texas.

With my move north came culture 2 . I grew up in a big city in Texas. But it was no comparison to the tightly 3 New York with their 8 million citizens. I was used to life at a 4 pace; New York moved fast. The saying is true—this city never 5 . I had to adjust.

My first reaction was fear. Fear I would 6 at my new internship in the 54-storey office building. Fear of getting lost on the subway. Fear that the locals wouldn't have 7 for my frequent moments of confusion. My 8 ranged from reasonable to silly. But I 9 my fears and kept trying.

I learned quickly never to 10 a New Yorker always speaks English. New York is home to people of all walks of life, from all corners of the world. At weekends, I would spend hours 11 along Canal Street in Chinatown—the closest I'd ever been to an 12 country.

By the end of my internship, I was a little older, a little wiser and sick of big city life. I 13 the skyscrapers, tourists and the high price I had to pay for a cheeseburger and fries. But I had 14 , too. I was quicker, smarter and more independent. I knew I would miss that feeling of having the world right at my doorstep. But it was good 15 for the life of travel I'd soon begin.

I was 17 years old. Along with a dozen other boys I had made a long trip to Iowa in order to see a college that I was thinking of 1 . Now I was there and I was feeling sad and 2 . I was missing my family and the Appalachian mountains of my home. I loved 3 in the forests there. I loved how the 4 turned a thousand shades of green in the spring and then became a sea of red. 5 . and orange in the fall. I loved the 6 of countless wild flowers that grew in our meadows(草地). These things were a 7 of me.

Here in Iowa everything was 8 . The grass looked burnt and brown. All that I could smell was a 9 of corn, mud, and pigs. I walked outside the dormitory of the college and sat on a 10 . I closed my eyes and 11 being back home again. When I opened my eyes, however, I saw something that 12 my soul. It was a beautiful sunset. Gold, red, purple and pink clouds all 13 together in a picture. It was so huge that it took my breath away. It made our mountain sunsets seem 14 by comparison. I 15 that I had been foolish and judgmental(武断的). This place had its own special beauty. This place too was a part of God's 16 .

An Orego n teenager Marcos Ugartes is being praised as a hero after he saved a young boy from a house fire.

The fire broke out just after 10 p. m. Monday. Marcos Ugartes and his dad were sitting on the couch in their home when they heard 1 down the street. As soon as they realized the screaming was coming from the house down the street, they 2 some residents were just arguing. But Marcos Ugartes noticed the flames（火焰）. Then Marcos and his dad took off running for their neighbor's house.

After learning that an 8-year-old Cody Ma was still 3 inside the home, Marcos Ugartes didn't think 4 about running down the street with his father to 5 the boy from the flames that broke out on the second story of the home.

Marcos Ugartes grabbed a ladder（梯子）and 6 to the second floor to the boy's room. He 7 the window and finally rescued the 8 trapped inside.

The Ugartes had never met the Ma family before the 9 . All that has changed, and now they are forever 10 . Cody's father said of the Ugartes, "I may never forget their 11 because they're my heroes. They're my son's heroes forever."

The Ma family expressed their 12 to Marcos on Tuesday, thanking him for his 13 by giving him a card and flowers.

Marcos told ABC News he got a lot of 14 from fellow students. The Gresham Fire Department plans to 15 Marcos later this year.
