Years ago, I lived ina building. The next building was only a few feet away from mine. There was awoman who lived there. I often saw her reading by her window in the afternoon. Afew months later, l began to find that her window was dirty. I couldn't see herclearly. I said to myself, "Why doesn't she clean the window? It reallylooks terrible!"

One morning. I decidedto clean my room, including cleaning the window. Late in the afternoon when Ifinished the cleaning. I sat down by the window for a rest. What a surprise! Icould see her clearly. Her window was clean! Then I knew that I looked at herthrough my dirty window.

That was an importantlesson for me. From then on. whenever I wanted to judge(评判) someone, I asked myself first," Am I looking at him throughmy dirty window?" Then I tried to clean the window of my own world so thatI could see the world clearly.

My name is Robinson Crusoe, and I was born in the city of York in 1632. My father was a successful businessman. I had two elder brothers. One of them worked in the army(军队) and was killed during the war against Spain. The other was missing one day, and we never knew what had happened to him. My father gave me a good education and wanted me to be a lawyer(律师). 

However, I wanted to be a sailor(海员) and go to sea. My father was very angry with me. He didn't understand why I wanted to leave his house, where I would have an easy and comfortable life.

"Two kinds of people go to sea, " he said. "They are the very poor people and the very rich people. The poor are foolish, having no other ways to live. The rich own ships and can make money with them. You are neither too poor nor too rich, so you should stay at home with your mother and me. Your elder brother didn't listen to me, and now he is dead. If you do not listen to me, you will have a difficult life!"

I tried to do what he wanted me to do, but I couldn't. I spoke to my mother.

"Please ask Dad if he will let me have one voyage(航行) by sea, " I asked her. "When I return, I will live the life he wants me to live. "

Mum was angry. "Your father will not let you go. I don't want you to go to sea either. It's dangerous. "

I argued(争吵) with my parents for another year. Then, I went to Hull with a friend who was going to London by ship. He invited me to go with him, and I agreed. I didn't even tell my parents before leaving. I just went. That was how all my bad luck began.

There were some mice at Jack's house.They ran into the kitchen and ate food at night.In the day,they went back to their home.So it was difficult for Jack to get them.

"I need a good cat,"Jack thought.He knew Mr.Brown had a shop and there were many cats and dogs.

A week later,Jack went back to Mr.Brown's shop with the cat."There are more mice at my house,"Jack said.He was very angry."Your cat doesn't want to catch them at all.But you said it was good for the mice."

"That's right,"said Mr.Brown."It's good for the mice.Come to think about it—it is good for the mice!"

Every year the students at Harry's school put on a concert. Their friends and parents go to the concert. Some students sing and dance. Others act in plays.

Harry likes to act. He also likes to write plays. For one concert he wrote a play about a spaceman. He called it Lost in Space. He acted in his play. He was the spaceman.

Harry made his own costume. It was a spacesuit. He used plastic bags to make the pants. He wore a shirt that belonged to his mother. It was an old shirt. It was made of silk. She did not want it anymore.

His shoes were an old pair of his father's. He didn't want them anymore either. They were made of leather.

Harry's helmet was an old motorcycle helmet. 

Harry painted his costume with silver paint. He looked like a spaceman. 

There was only one problem. No one could hear what he said!

Be What's Missing

Where was that cashier(收银员)? Impatient, I quickly looked at my 1 . I hardly had enough time to eat a sandwich and rush back to work. I looked around the nearly empty 2 , but the cashier was nowhere in sight. A woman stood wiping( 擦 ) the far end of the counter( 柜 台 ). She3 me coldly with sad, dark eyes.
