Several times each year the Queen gives afternoon tea parties at which guests are served tiny cakes filled with cream from her own cows. Cakes and sandwiches are bought in by footmen, yet you never see the Queen touch a thing. She

simply sits beside a big silver plate, pouring cups of tea for everyone and carefully avoiding the cakes.

At cocktail parties the Queen moves from group to group, chatting informally, and manages to make one glass of diet drink to last a whole evening. Tours abroad are difficult because hosts seem to believe the warmth of their welcome must be shown with wonderful state banquets(宴). But the Queen has perfected the art of appearing to enjoy her meal without actually eating much. During one visit to the Pacific islands of Tonga, a specially-prepared dinner was set up in   a hut made of wood and bamboo leaves. Deep holes were dug in the ground, filled with hot stones and baby pigs, and the pigs were slowly cooked with dry heat over several days. The Queen looked uneasily at her plate when she discovered a   whole roast(烤) pig was her serving.

Then she became uneasy when a turkey, some meat, bananas and an apple were also carried in for each guest. So she depended on her old favourite trick of talking with her host, King Tupou IV, carrying on a warm conversation. At the same time she pushed her food around her plate and only ate a piece of turkey and some fruit.

Reporters traveling with her have noticed that the Queen will sometimes seem so interested in a foreign leader's political(政治的) chat that she simply never has time to finish a meal before it is time to get up and make her speech. She will lift her fork, then put it down again to make another point, leaving almost all of her meal untouched.

When I was about 14, I had a friend who liked to tell me my shortcomings(缺点). For example: I was very1 , I wasn't a top student, I talked too much. I was too proud and soon. I became so2 that I couldn't stand her at last. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.

My father3 me quietly and asked, "Are the things she says true or not? Jane, didn't you ever want to know what you're 4 like? Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said." I did a she told me. To my great surprise, I5 that about half the things were true. Some I couldn't change, like being very short. But many I could and I wanted to change. For the first time, I had a better understanding of 6 .

I brought the list back to my father7 he refused to read it. "That's just for you," he said, "You know better than any other person the truth about yourself. When people say something true, you'll finally find it will be 8 to you. Don't shut your ears. Listen to them all, but only hear the truth and do what you know. It is the 9 thing to do.

Father's 10 have returned to meat many important moments. In my life, I've never had a better piece of advice.

When Sally was a child, she went to the city park with her mom on a sunny morning. She felt very unhappy. Her mom saw that and asked why. Sally told her mother that she felt so sorry to see so much rubbish on the ground. 

Her mom looked around. There were pieces of paper, boxes, glass bottles and a lot of other rubbish everywhere. "What can we do?" asked Sally sadly. "I'm sure you will think of something," said her mom. 

As soon as Sally got home with her mom, she painted a picture of the park and wrote a sign in large black letters at the top of the picture. The sign said, "PLEASE KEEP OUR PARK CLEAN". Later, she took plenty of bags and went back to the park with her mom. Sally put up her picture on a big rubbish box. 

The children at the park ran over to see what was going on. Sally handed each of them a bag. "Let's clean up this place," said Sally. Then they began to pick up the rubbish, talking and laughing. Soon, all the bags were full. 

Then Sally's mom led them to put the rubbish into different kinds of rubbish boxes. When they looked at the clean park, they all had a strong feeling of satisfaction. 

From then on, Sally has been keeping doing the cleaning and sorting (分类) rubbish. More and more people joined her to play a part in environment protection.

Hello, I'm Jim. I'm a student in No. 2 Middle School. Today is Saturday. I can stay in bed late. Usually I get up at six on weekdays, but at eight on weekends. Then I take a shower, brush my teeth and wash my face. At half past eight, I have breakfast. I often eat bread and eggs and drink a glass of milk. They are healthy food. I don't like hamburgers or noodles.

Then, I go to the park and do sports. I play basketball with my brother. He can play it well. After that, I go back home with my brother, and we watch TV together. I have lunch with my brother in a dining hall at half past eleven, because my parents don't come back home from work on weekends. And then I do my homework on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Sometimes I go out with my brother. I like drawing pictures on Sunday afternoon in the open air with my brother. It's good to enjoy nature(自然).

On Sunday evening, I always take a walk after supper with my brother. That's very cool. I enjoy the beautiful night streets. Finally, I go to bed at around a quarter to ten.

Like most parents, mine spent much time advising me to take part in activities outside school. However, they never forced me, and I never found anything I was interested in. Then one day a friend at school told me about a local dance group and asked if I wanted to go with her. So, after school we went to talk to the dance teacher. She explained everything to us and we both decided to join.

My parents were really pleased to hear I'd finally chosen dancing. They think if you develop an interest in doing something yourself, it will be easier to succeed.

I' ve now been attending the dancing classes for 3 years and I really enjoy it. We are organized into age groups, and at 16 I'm now in the oldest class. There are classes of swing dance, ballet(芭蕾舞), street dance and folk dance. I practice street dance and I'm quite good at it. I also help out leading some of the younger children.

We also take part in events like local and even national dance shows, and relatives turn up to see their children perform. My parents are proud of me as they tell me all the time.

Now I' ll be too old to continue dancing with the group. However, I have already made plans to continue with them. The dance school has become very successful and is opening new classes. The director has asked if I'd like to be one of the group leaders and of course I said" yes"!

Friends are a part of our lives. In my life，I have a best friend named Lucy. She means a lot to me. My life would be less colorful without her. Although we sometimes argue，we still treat each other as best friends. 

We met each other four years ago. She said hello to me with a sweet smile. I guessed that she was a gentle girl. And she really was. When I was in trouble，she always stood by me and made me feel better. 

This winter holiday，we went to the amusement park Happy Valley together. We had fun together on the roller coaster （过山车）. We held each other's hands and shouted loudly when we were riding the roller coaster. It was so exciting. The ride made me feel a little sick, so she bought a bottle of water for me. This experience left me with a lot of good memories（回忆） and made our friendship stronger.

There is a line in the movie Soulmate that says， "If you step on someone's shadow，you will never leave each other. " So I will try my best to "step on her shadow". Many adults think that children can't be friends forever. But I don't believe this. 

Maybe we won't always spend all of our time together. But I will enjoy the time I spend with her and the good memories she has given me.
