It's well-known that silk was discovered in China. It's wonderfully strong, light and soft. As one of the best materials for clothes, silk has a perfect look and feel that no other materials can match. 

There is a story about how silk was discovered. Lei Zu, the wife of Huang Di, was having tea under a mulberry tree when a silkworm cocoon(蚕茧)fell into her cup. As she tried to take the cocoon out, it started to unwind(展开)and the "line" seemed endless. She realized that the strong line could be used to make clothes. Then Lei Zu taught her people how to raise silkworms and how to get silk In this way, the silk industry was born. 

For hundreds of years after that, silk was only used by rich people. It was a symbol of identity and status(身份和地位). With the development of the silk industry, more silk was produced. It was no longer just for rich people. In the Han Dynasty, silk was transported as far away as Spain, Rome and many other counties. The trade road was famously known as the Silk Road, which connected China with the rest of the world

Today, silk can be used for many kinds of things, not just for clothes, bus also for paintings, writing brushes, kites and even fishing nets. Wherever silk goes around the world, it is always warmly received. 

One of {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(important) things in the world is making friends. If you have a good friend, you are lucky.

A good friend is more necessary{#blank#}2{#/blank#}money or anything else in the world. You can be without money{#blank#}3{#/blank#}you can not be without friends. Sometimes only friends can help you, not money. For example, if you fall into water and you{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(can) swim, then only your friend can save you.

Taos is a small town in New Mexico, USA. Many people come here for a visit every year. They do not come to see the beautiful scenes (景色) 1 eat delicious food. They come to listen to a kind of 2 sound: the Taos Hum. 

The word "hum" means a low sound that never stops. 3 is the sound strange? Firstly, the Taos Hum that people hear is quite 4 . Someone says it sounds like a little bee (蜜蜂) flying around you. Others think it sounds like a car moving in a faraway (遥远的) place. Secondly, 5 knows where the sound comes from. Joe Mullins, a scientist from the University of New Mexico, is one of the first persons to do 6 on the hum. He put some instruments in places where people could hear the hum, but those instruments couldn't "hear" any hum! Others who wanted to find the hum failed, too.

We can do many interesting chemical tests in our class. Today, we will use CO2 to blow up a balloon! Mixing baking soda(小苏打) with vinegar(醋) together can give off the CO2

What you'll need

Instructions

●Before you begin, make sure that you pull the balloon long to make it as easy as possible to blow up. 

●Put the 40 ml of water into the soft drink bottle. 

●Add the baking soda and mix it with water. 

●Put the vinegar in and quickly put the balloon over the mouth of the bottle. 

What's happening?

If all goes well then the balloon should become bigger and bigger! Adding the vinegar to the baking soda creates a chemical effect. The baking soda is a base(碱), while the vinegar is an acid(酸). When the two are mixed, they'll create CO2. The gas rises up and runs away through the soft drink bottle. However, it doesn't get away from the balloon, pushing it outwards and blowing it up.

Every year，on January 5th，the city of Harbin in northeast China changes into a winter wonderland. Tourists from all around the world come to visit {#blank#}1{#/blank#} wonderful ice and snow festival. 

The festival started in 1963 and began as a winter party. The festival often lasts for one month. However， {#blank#}2{#/blank#} the weather stays cold and dry，it will go on for a few more days. Temperatures are usually very cold. They can go down to －17℃. 

Ice sculptors(雕塑家)use{#blank#}3{#/blank#} tools to carve the hard ice and snow. These sculptors display their works {#blank#}4{#/blank#} two main areas. "Sun Island"has huge snow sculptures of people and animals. "Ice and Snow World" has sculptures of buildings. At night，these buildings light up with brightlycolored lights. 

Visitors can do a lot of other {#blank#}5{#/blank#}，such as skiing and ice sliding. They can also go swimming in the icy waters of the Songhua River.
