On the first evening, the three of us were tired after walking for about eight hours. We soon fell asleep. In the morning, I was surprised to find the bag of food had been open.

    “Bears,” said Joe, “we should hang the food in a tree tonight.”

    Later that day we stopped in a beautiful field by a river. We put up the tent and fell asleep. During the night the bears came again. This time they took the food from the tree.

    “Bears can climb trees. They can smell food from a long way away,” said Ben.

    “We must keep the camp clean. Bears must think our rubbish is food,” I said. “And we should make lots of noise, too. If they know where we are, they may not come any closer,” said Joe.

    “But if you see a bear,” said Ben, “you mustn't make any sudden moves or make a sound, and you mustn't run either. No one can run faster in the forest than a bear. And remember we don't have a gun to keep us safe.” That night, we went to sleep ... or we tried to.

    The next day, while the others were resting, I went for a walk in the forest. Suddenly, I saw a baby bear playing with some sticks and stones. He looked so soft and friendly, and I thought, “If I reach out, I can just touch him.”

    There was a loud noise behind me.

    I didn't dare to move, not even turn my head. There was another loud noise. The baby bear looked up, and ran towards me. I turned pale and he ran past me into the woods.

    I couldn't turn round until a few minutes later. Then I saw the baby bear and his huge mother walking away.

    I ran back to my friends. I have never run so fast.

    For the next 10 days, every time there was sudden noise, my blood went cold.

    One morning there was a loud knock at Dean Swift's door. The servant(佣人)opened it. A man who was outside handed her a fine duck and said, "Here's a present for Dean. It's from Mr Boyle." Then, without another word, he walked away.

    Mr. Boyle was a sporty neighbour. He liked reading Dean Swift's books and sending him presents. The second time, the man brought a quail(鹌鹑). "Here's something else for Dean," he said and threw it into the servant's arms.

    "That man has no manners," the servant told Dean.

    "The next time he comes," said Dean, "let me know."

    It was not long before the man came with another present. Dean went to the door.

    "Here's a rabbit from Mr. Boyle, "said the man.

    "See here, "said Dean." That is not the way to deliver a message here. Just walk inside and make believe(假装)that you were Dean Swift. I will show you."

    "I'll agree to that, "said the man, and he walked inside. Dean took the rabbit and knocked gently at the door.

    The door was opened by the man. Dean said, "If you please, sir, Mr Boyle wishes you to accept this fine rabbit."

    "Oh, thank you, "said the man very politely. Then, taking out his wallet, he offered Dean some money." And here is something for your trouble."

    The lesson in manners was not forgotten. After that, the man was very polite when he brought presents. And Dean also took the hint(暗示).He always remembered to give the man a tip for his trouble.

    John, David and James were three brothers. Every year on their mother's birthday, they sent her expensive presents. They liked to show her how rich they were.

    The oldest brother , John, decided to give his mother a perfect(完 美的) present. He thought it must be more expensive than his brothers'.

    So he put an advertisement(广告) in the newspapers: WANTED THE PERFECT PRESENT FOR A RICH WOMAN. For many days people phoned him from all over the country. Each of them wanted to sell him" the perfect present". But John didn't like any of them.

    Then, less than a week before his mother's birthday, a man came to his office. He was carrying a cage with a large bird in it. "This bird," the man said," can speak ten languages (语言) and sing any popular songs. There's no other bird like it in the world." With these words, he asked the bird to speak to John in French, tell him a joke in Japanese and sing a famous popular song. John was very happy.

    "I'll buy it. How much do you want?" John said." One hundred thousand dollars," the man said. This was a lot of money, but John paid him. Then he sent the bird to his mother with a birthday card.

    The day after his mother's birthday he phoned her." Well, Mother," he asked," what do you think of the bird?" "Oh, very delicious, dear," she answered.
