We asked readers to write in and tell us about all the things that happened to them recently. I got hundreds of replies. Here are two of them.
I was coming home from a party really late at night, and I missed the last train home. I didn't have enough money for a cab, and I didn't want to walk home in the dark. I was standing outside the train station, and I guess I looked worried because a woman came up and asked me if I needed any help. She offered to share a cab with me and to pay for it! She said she didn't like being by herself at night, either. I was so grateful. —Abby Walters |
When I was shopping at the mall last week, I lost my wallet with all my money and credit cards in it. I spent a long time looking for it but with no luck. I was really upset because it had my spare(额外的) house key and address in it, too. Anyway, later that day after I got home, my doorbell rang. It was a young man, and he had my wallet. He saw it on the ground when he was walking into the mall. He drove all the way to my house to give it back to me!I couldn't believe it! I was so lucky! —Andrea Keane |

Remember we used to see many fireflies(萤火虫) shining in the grass on summer evenings? Now we are lucky if we see one. Fireflies have become fewer and fewer all over the world because the lights at night keep them away and because there is too little land for them to live on. To bring these little flying friends back into our lives, we can: 1. Keep the grass taller and grow more plants. Fireflies like to live over tall grass or near the high points of plants. 2. Leave dry leaves or dead plants in the garden. Small animals like slugs, snails, and worms live under them. They are fireflies' favorite food. 3. Turn off lights in the garden or by the window. When it is too bright, fireflies don't know if the light is from other fireflies or from lamps. So it is difficult for them to find each other. 4. Build a pond in the yard and keep the water clean. Fireflies like to live around clean water. Let us know if you have any questions. The National Science Center: 123-4567. |
