Abingdon School Open Day

    The Open Day this year will be on Saturday, 1 October 2011. The Open Day is for all the family, with activities and displays(展示) about all aspects(方面) of the school. All the teachers, students and parents will attend. The day starts at 9:30 a. m. and finishes at 2:30 p.m.  You are welcome to arrive at any time during the lessons in the morning and afternoon. Please read the outline of Open Day events.

    If you can't come to the Open Day, that's all right. There are many other chances(机会) to visit Abingdon School

    St Helen School and St Katharine School Open Day will be on the same date, so you can also visit those two.

    Parking at the school on the Open Day may be limited(有限的), so you can also park your cars in Lotus Supermarket's car park.  It's just a three-minute walk away.

The only thing better than reading a good book is reading it with others. In a book club, a group of people will find a book. Then everyone will read it by themselves first and then talk about the book with others. Reading is not just something you love doing by yourself. It's also fun to talk about what you' re reading with friends.

There are no rules(规则) of starting a book club. But it's better to have a plan for it. Here it is.

First, before you start a book club, you should think about" What will my book club be like?"" When and where will we meet?"

Then, ask your friends to come to your club. Think of eight to twelve people around your age. You may ask your friends for help, and they can ask their friends to come. These people may be your new club members. And you can make friends with them.

Next, having a topic can also help. The topic may interest members to look up more information about it. You might want to read stories about history. The topic" history" makes it easier to know which books to read. If every time every member helps find a book to read, you might know more great new books and writers.

Finally, make sure to read the book before the meeting. And then come to the meeting with questions to talk about.

My name is Michelle. It is a great pleasure to write to you. I like reading your books Harry Potter. A few days ago，I listened to a radio program about you. Now I know you were born in England and you are now living with your husband and children in Scotland. I also know that you taught English at home and in other countries before you started writing books. The radio program said that you could write only when your baby daughter fell asleep，so you worked on the first book for five years. That was really a difficult job. But you have already finished writing seven Harry Potter books. That's great!Your son David，your daughters Jessica and Mackenzie must be proud of you. Of all five books I have read，I love the second one best because I find it easier to understand. It brings me anew world where I can enjoy the adventures with Harry and his friends. I hope I can become a writer like you when I grow up. Thank you for spending time reading my letter.

To-wit-to-woo, to-wit-to-woo! What's that strange sound coming from the forest at night? It's an owl, of course! The owl is different from all other birds in so many ways. 

The owl's hearing and eyesight are better than most animal. All day long, the owl rests on the tree and sleep It hunts (捕猎) only at night. When evening comes, the animals all get to a safe place. The owl opens its big, round eyes to look around. Any little animals around had better be careful, The owl eats small animals like mice as food, but it wouldn't say no to another bird, if it's really hungry. 

The owl uses its great hearing to find its food, and then it turns its head from side to side. using its sharp (敏锐的) eyes to fly after the animal. Finally, it flies down to get the animal. Owls have special, soft feathers (羽毛), so they can fly without making any sound. Owls are good hunters and they can even catch a fly in the air!

The owl is usually quiet, except (除余了) when you get too close to its home. The mother owl is a great mother. She will protect her babies by opening her feathers angrily. She will even hurt people if she thinks her babies are in danger!

The owl has no teeth, so it eats an animal whole. All the parts of the animal that the owl can't digest (消化) will end up as small pieces. If you find these small pieces, you know you are near an owl's home.

Couplets (对联) are very popular {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Chinese people. At first, people {#blank#}2{#/blank#}red paper instead of peach wood charms(桃符) to {#blank#}3{#/blank#}the Spring Festival couplets. After Qing Dynasty, the couplets{#blank#}4{#/blank#} once very popular. Lots of famous couplets appeared. With the development of the international cultural exchange, the couplets were also{#blank#}5{#/blank#} to Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Singapore and other {#blank#}6{#/blank#}. The customs of sticking these couplets still{#blank#}7{#/blank#} now.

 Couplets are usually {#blank#}8{#/blank#}different shapes and colors. Nice words and sentences are {#blank#}9{#/blank#} on the couplets. Different couplets are put on doors, walls or windows as symbols of wishes for good luck{#blank#}10{#/blank#}a happy new year.

 How much do you know about the 24 solar terms(节气)? The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year {#blank#}1{#/blank#} 24 solar terms(节气). Major Snow(大雪), the {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(twenty-one) solar term of the year, began on Dec. 7 and ended on Dec. 8 in 2024. During Major Snow, the snow becomes heavy and begins to accumulate(堆积) on the ground. The temperature drops {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(quick). Here are some things you should know about Major Snow.

Snowy winter

 The snow in North China may last a whole day, breaking tree {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(branch) and blocking the road. The natural scenery is"hundreds of leagues ice-bound go; over thousands of leagues flies snow(数百里冰封, 千里飞雪)". In the south, snowflakes fall and the world turns white.

Enjoying plum blossoms(梅花)

 Plum blossoms usually flower in mid-to-late December in some southern cities of China, and sometimes bloom even{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(early). Along with the pine(松树) and bamboo, the plum blossom {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(consider) one of the Three Friends of Winter.

Eating lamb

 Lamb is {#blank#}7{#/blank#} favorite food for Chinese people during Major Snow. It's excellent for {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(nourish) the body and providing protection against the cold. People in Chongqing like to have potted lamb soup with their families and friends.

Preventing respiratory illness(呼吸道疾病)

 During this period, Chinese people wear a warm scarf {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(protect) the neck and drink enough water. During Major Snow, it is drier and colder, so people should drink more water. {#blank#}10{#/blank#} , you shouldn't drink too much water at once and don't drink cold water after exercise.
