Have you ever wondered why we say maidongxi（卖东西）instead of mainanbei, shangcesuo（上厕所）instead of xiacesuo, and yijianxiangzuo（意见相左）instead of yijianxiangyou? Many Chinese words have directions in them, and there is lots of history and culture hidden behind. 

East or West

When going shopping, Chinese people say maidongxiinstead of mainanbei. A theory says that in the Tang Dynasty, there were two popular markets in Chang'an, the national capital at the time. One was called the East Market, and the other was called the West Market. When shopping, people usually went to the East Market first, and then went to the West Market. As time went by, people started to describe shopping as maidongxi. 

Up or down

We use shangcesuoto mean "go to the bathroom" and xiachufangto mean "go to the kitchen". Why? In ancient times, houses were laid out （布局）in a certain way. The gate of the house would face south, with the bathroom in the northeastern part of the house and the kitchen in the southeastern part. On maps, north is usually at the top while south is at the bottom. In Chinese, we talk about the north as shangand the south as xia. So people would say they're going up to the bathroom and down to the kitchen. 

Ancient Chinese not only used shangand xiato refer to （指代）directions but also social positions. For example, people used huangshangto refer to the emperor and dianxiato refer to princes who had a lower position than the emperor. 

Left or right

Most people today are right-handed. They feel uncomfortable if they try to use their left hand to write or use chopsticks. This was true in old times as well. So in ancient China, "left" was related to （与……有关联）being different, such as in yijianxiangzuo. If people don't accept common beliefs （信念）, we still say they are following ____. 

When shaking hands, it's important to know which hand to use. In most cultures, the right hand is generally used for a handshake. For example, in some countries, such as India and Nepal, the left hand is considered unclean. However, if you are in a culture where the left hand is used, you'd better do as the locals do. 

"Left" and "right" also have something to do with people's social position. For a long time in ancient China, "right" stood for higher position than "left". For example, the character "佑", developed from "右", means a person in a higher position would protect someone in a lower position. 

I moved here three years ago, and because of my business, I needed to fly both to China and the United States often. When I traveled alone, I felt lonely because I didn't speak English well. I made a decision that I had to learn English well.

I came to Rita Colina's class at the Chinese Community Center in Houston. Before the class, I always walked away when I met any foreigner. It's completely different now. I try to communicate with Americans in English by myself. Now I like to talk to foreigners. Not only the life becomes more flexible, but also I really love to live here.

I learn English in four ways:

First of all, I listen to what the teacher teaches in class. Then I keep speaking during the class.

Second, I do my homework right away when I get home. I memorize at least five vocabulary words every day.

Third, I listen to American radio stations, and I watch the TV news and other American programs with my family every day. I ask them whatever I don't know.

Finally, I go to American stores as often as possible so I will have more chances to learn more new words, and find any chance to talk to Americans in English.

Anyway, the most important thing is not to be afraid to open your mouth. It doesn't matter even though you speak incorrectly. It's the key, you know.

Yuan Longping, known as" the father of hybrid"(杂交) rice, created hybrid rice. It helps feed the world.

In the 1960s, many people didn't have enough food to eat. Yuan decided to work on a kind of hybrid rice as the thought this rice could feed more people.

At first, some other scientists didn't think hybrid rice was possible. But Yuan wanted to try anyway. He spent four years looking for a kind of wild rice that could be crossed with other kinds of rice. In 1964, he found it.

In 1973, he grew the world's first hybrid rice strain(品种). Compared with common ones, the strain has great advantages. It can produce 20% more rice per mu. Besides, farmers can grow it on many different kinds of land. And it can fight bad weather, too. This kind of hybrid rice has been grown all over China. It has helped China feed nearly one fifth of the world's population with only about 7% of the world's farmland.

Because of his great achievement (成就), Yuan won many prizes, including the Medal of the Republic, the highest honor(荣誉) in China. He will be remembered in everyone's heart.

People are always curious to know what things on the earth can be seen from space. Some of geographical features (地势) and man- made things are huge enough to be seen from hundreds of kilometres above. Here we list some huge things on the earth that can be seen from space. 

●Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef which is more than 2, 000 kilometres long becomes the largest coral reef on the earth. It also becomes the largest living thing in this world that can be seen from space. The Great Barrier Reef connects more than 900 reef islands, lied in the eastern part of Australia. It is a home for about 1, 500 tropical(热带的) fish species. It also becomes the main place of divers and the finest tourist place in Australia. 

● Pyramids of Giza

One of the seven wonders of ancient world also becomes a favourite place for astronomers to take photos from space. It cannot be seen at all by eyes, so astronomers used a special camera for it. Within space images of Pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphin x which has a face of human but a body of lion can also be seen from space under possible conditions. 

●Himalayas

Himalayas, including the world's highest mountains, can be seen from space. Himalayas have more than 110 peaks rising to elevations of 24, 000 feet(7, 300 metres) or more above sea level. The width of Himalayas from south to north varies between 125 and 250 miles(200 and 400 km). Their total area amounts are about 230, 000 square miles(595, 000 square km).
