No one knows exactly when jazz was invented, or by whom. But it is said that it began in the early 1900s. Jazz was a new kind of music, for America and the world, and New Orleans was {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(它的) birthplace.

Who were the jazz pioneers?{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(大多数) were blacks. This music was not written down, and at first only blacks played it. It was hard for white musical people to learn the new style. But soon they were playing jazz, too.

The popularity of this music{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(传播) from New Orleans. It traveled up the Mississippi to Chicago, then to Kansas City and New York. By the 1920s, there were many jazz musicians, both black and white. Many of them were{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(著名的). A man named Louis Armstrong is one of them.

Louis Armstrong was not only a born musician but also hard-working. He had a good{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(感觉) of humor and a big smile and he always smiled happily. These personal qualities were{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(珍贵的) in his life.{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(在……以后) he became famous, he traveled around the world. It seemed that everyone wanted to hear Louis play. But life was not always easy,{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(尤其) at the beginning.

Louis Armstrong was born in 1900 in New Orleans. His father never went to school and his mother could hardly read. The earliest maps were probably drawn in the Middle East. Some of these maps have survived and they show us the people at that time thought the earth was flat(平的).{#blank#}1{#/blank#} time went by, the pictures became more detailed(详细的) and maps were more {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(careful) made. Later on, ancient Greeks(希腊人) used their knowledge of math and science to make maps. Greek maps tell us the Greeks {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(know) the world is round.

So far, from simple pictures, map-making {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(turn) into a science. People make maps by surveying(勘测) land. In the 1900s, people around the world started to share information to make {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(good) maps.{#blank#}6{#/blank#} the help of the photographs taken from the sky and space, maps are now more exactly(准确地) made than ever.{#blank#}7{#/blank#} the world is always changing, we will always need new maps.

Prince barked and nudged the tennis ball towards Damon.

"Not now," Damon said. "I'm playing with Duke."

Duke tried to pick up the tennis ball, but his mouth was too small.

"Sorry, little guy. You need to grow a little before you can play with the ball," Damon said.

"Hey," Scott said, "show Duke how well Prince can catch the ball."

Damon wanted to keep playing with Duke. But Scott said to him, "Come on, show him."

Damon got up. He tossed the ball high in the air, and Prince jumped up to catch it.

"Wow!" Scott said. "I can't wait for Duke to be big enough to do that."

"But the puppy is so cute and fun," Damon said.

"Yeah, but Duke is too little to play with a ball. Prince is like having a friend around all the time," Scott said.

Damon looked at Prince and smiled. He was happy to have a dog who was also a friend.

Jack is a twenty-year-old young man. Two years ago, when he finished high school, he found a job in a shop. Usually he works until ten o'clock in the evening. He is very tired when he gets home. After a quick supper he goes to bed and soon falls asleep. His grandma who lives downstairs is satisfied with him.

One day, on his way home, he met Mary. They were both happy. He invited the girl to his house. She agreed happily. He bought some fruit and drinks for her. And they talked about their school, teachers, classmates and their future. They talked for a long time.

"Have a look at your watch, please," said the girl. "What time is it now?"

"Sorry, something is wrong with my watch," said Jack. "Where's yours?"

"I left it at home."

Jack thought for a moment and found a way. He began to stamp his foot on the floor. "Bang! Bang! Bang!"

The sound woke his grandma up. The old woman shouted downstairs, "It's twelve o'clock in the night, Jack. Why are you still jumping upstairs?"
