In 1937, my father, who was almost 20 years old, started a long journey. He traveled a thousand miles across China with his university, Zhejiang University, during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression(抗日战争). The Chinese government wanted to keep the university students safe because they were important for the country's future. As the university planned for the journey, the Head Librarian of Zhejiang Library, asked the university to take a valuable collection of books with them.

The books were called" Siku Quanshu". Created in the 18th century, this was a huge encyclopedia(百科全书) with 2.3 million pages and about 997 million words. It was so important that plans were made to protect it at any cost, even though it added another 230 boxes to the students' cargo.

The journey was not easy. Students and teachers were facing the dangers from air attacks.(空袭). They were always tired and hungry. They had to sleep on the ground in old temples(寺庙) but they continued their classes whenever they could. To protect the books, they tried to move by boat or truck whenever possible; at other times, they would put the boxes into carts(手推车). Sometimes the students had to carry some of the books in their backpacks. One scary moment was when a box of the Siku Quanshu books fell into a river. They quickly saved the books and dried them in a local temple.

After 1,400 miles and 28 months on the road, the university group finally reached a small town called Zunyi in Guizhou province. They stayed there in simple classrooms and dorms, until the war moved deeper into China. To further protect the Siku Quanshu, the books were hidden in a nearby cave, guarded by university staff. The books made it through the war in surprisingly good condition and were sent back to Zhejiang Library.

This amazing story shows how a group of young students and their teachers did everything they could to protect their culture's treasures. They faced many dangers and hardships, but they never gave up. They worked together to keep their knowledge safe.

①Aarrav Anil, a 13-year-old boy, has had a deep interest in mechanics (机械学) since childhood. He invented a smart spoon and stood for India to attend an international competition last year. In the competition, he won the first prize. But he didn't create his smart spoon to win a prize. He noticed his uncle who has Parkinson's disease (PD) (帕金森病) try to feed himself. Food kept falling out of his mouth, making him look like a mess. Aarrav wanted to make a change.

②More than 7 million people in India have PD. The disease influences the brain, causing patients to shake uncontrollably. As the disease progresses, it leads to difficulty in eating by oneself.

③Aarrav wanted his uncle to be able to eat by himself. This encouraged the boy to look for a way to help his uncle. So he took tools to his room with sensors (传感器) and a 3D printer. But not everything went well.

④"I was sad that I couldn't find certain parts I needed in India. I had to buy some from abroad." Aarrav said in an interview.

⑤Aarrav made a first model, but the spoon handle was not easy for his uncle to hold. "I've improved the invention. It needs to be waterproof (防水的). The spoon must be easily separated, so that it can be cleaned and replaced with a fork. And the spoon needs to be deeper to hold more food." the boy said.

⑥The smart spoon is now being tested at a local college. The test is expected to be completed in early 2025. Aarrav hopes that his smart spoon will be used in hospitals soon.

English is becoming more and more popular in China. It can be used in every field, such as on some signs and restaurant menus. But there are some problems when people use it. Perhaps you' ve seen the English letters "WC" in your city. They show public toilets. But do you know it is far from native(地道的) English? In fact, foreigners from English-speaking countries seldom use the letters. Workers in our city are changing "WC" signs all over the city. The government is spending much money changing all the bad English on signs and restaurant menus. Many other places in China are following the steps. 

"WC, or water closet, is old-fashioned English. It sounds dirty to me, " says Nancy, a young woman from the US. The old sign will become "Gents/Men" and "Ladies/Women". "I see much poor English in everyday life, and not only on signs, " she says. "I know what they mean, but they are Chinglish, not real English. For example, when someone says to me ‘My home town is Zhejiang Province', I know he or she should say ‘My home town is in Zhejiang Province'. Home town is a smaller place in a province. " The common mistakes that Nancy picked up include "Not Entry", which should be" No Entry"; "Direction of Airport" should be changed to "To the Airport". And it is "Room Rate", not "Room Price". And remember to "Keep off the Grass" rather than "Care of the Green. " The next time you walk on the street or eat in the restaurant, you can go and see if the expressions are right. 

Meiyu, is from Turkey (土耳其). She is the youngest child of her family. After high school, many people decided to learn English or Japanese, but Meiyu decided to learn Chinese in university. She learnt Chinese for four years in Ankara University in Turkey, and got her Chinese name Meiyu there. 

Meiyu fell in love with Chinese after going to university. She became more interested after she knew more about Chinese history. In the beginning, many people did not understand her decision. But they all said Meiyu had made a right choice when she graduated from university. Because at that time, more Chinese have been visiting Turkey. The trade between the two countries also requires Chinese- speaking people. "Being able to speak Chinese means more job opportunities, " said Meiyu. 

And then she worked in Wuhan, China. Besides going on studying Chinese, she showed great interest in Chinese kung fu as well, so she spent her free time on kung fu training with her coaches. Not only could kung fu help improve her health, but its history and culture also attracted(吸引) Meiyu. Meiyu said, "The moreI know about China, the luckier I feel to have been here. But the truth is that fun and pain go together in the process of learning. "

After Meiyu worked in China for two years, her friends wanted her to stay in China, but her parents hoped she could go back home. Meiyu thought it was difficult to decide. "Even if I go back to Turkey, I will choose Chinese language education as my job, " said Meiyu.
