Roald Dahl was born in 1916 in Wales, Britain. His father was rich but he died when Roald was very young. Roald and his mother lived a hard life. He had to leave school and went to Africa where he worked for an oil company.

In 1939 Roald became a pilot, but he had a bad accident. It made him limp(瘸的) for the rest of his life. After this, Roald went to America where he wrote a story about his experience as a pilot. It was so good that it was put in a magazine.

Roald married an American film star. They bought a house in England and had five children. From 1960 to 1965, ____: Theo, one of his children, was hit by a taxi and was seriously hurt. Olivia, one of Roald's daughters, died of a strange illness. Soon after this, his wife also had a serious illness. It took her years to get completely better.

Gradually Roald became more and more successful. He always did his writing in an old shed(棚) at the back of his house. He always sat in the same old armchair with a wooden board on his lap.

“One of the nice things about being a writer,” he once said, “is that all you need is what you've got in your head and a pencil and a bit of paper.”

In 1983 Roald won a big prize for his book The BFG. During his life, Roald wrote many famous books, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, Fantastic Mr. Fox.

"Can I see my baby?" asked the happy new mother. When the baby was in her arms, she couldn't believe her eyes. The baby was born without ears.
Time proved(证明) that the baby's hearing was very good though he had no ears. He got on well with his classmates. But one day, he said to his mother, tears in his eyes, "A big boy called me a freak (畸形的)."
The boy's father asked the family doctor. "Could nothing be done?"
"I believe I could graft (植入) on a pair of outer ears if they could be got," the doctor said. They tried to find a person who was helpful for the young man.
One day, his father said to the son, "You're going to the hospital, son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But we must keep it a secret who the person is."
The operation(手术) was a great success, and a new person appeared. His cleverness and hard work made him a very successful person. He married and lived a happy life.
He once asked his father, "Who gave me the ears? I could do enough for him or her."
"I do not believe you could, "said the father." The agreement was that you are not to know...not yet."
For years they kept it a secret, but the day did come. He stood with his father over his mother's body. Slowly, the father raised the thick, brown hair. To his surprise, the son found his mother had no outer ears.
"Mother said she was glad she never needed to cut her hair," his father said in a low voice, "and nobody ever thought mother less beautiful, did they?”

If you walk in the Peking University (北京大学),you are likely to meet a boy carrying a big bottle of water and a bag of buns (馒头) in his hand. He is ordinary in his looks and wearing, but uncommon in maths achievement. He is Wei Dongyi, a teacher and a math talent in the Peking University.

He is known by the public for an interview. He was asked to cheer up the high school students who were about to take the Chinese gaokao, and he just said "Welcome to Peking University. I don't know what else to say. "It was later leaned that this shy boy once won gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad (国际奥林匹克数学竞赛). Because of this, he was invited to study at Harvard University, but he refused. His reason is also simple: "I don't want to go abroad".

Wei's father is a math professor. This influenced him in some ways. When he was young, he was interested in math while other children loved playing toys. He is a big fan of math.

He was always found reading math books by his classmates.

Although he was so successful, his life can't be simpler! He doesn't like social media (社交媒体) or going to parties. He always takes a bottle of water and refills it with drinking water simply because it is good for the environment.

This genius lives in his own world. He doesn't care about how much he got or outside opinions but he loves his country and math. He is willing to put his whole life into solving math problems.
