阅读理解

The following are some tips for becoming a successful businessman by Michael Bloomberg. They are based on his experience of building a company from the ground  up, leading New York City as mayor(市长), and so on.

Take Risks

Life is too short to spend your time avoiding failure.

In 1981, at the age of 39, I lost my job. The next day I took a big risk and began my own company. In 2001, when I was debating whether to run for mayor, most people advised me not to do it. But one person said, “If you can imagine yourself giving a concession(败选)speech, then why not go for it?” That was the best advice I received, and I followed it.

In order to succeed, you must first be willing to fail— and you must have the courage to go for it anyway.

    Make your own luck

Luck plays a part in success. The harder you work, the luckier you get.

Whatever you choose to do, even if it's not the job of your dreams, always work hard at it. Be the first person at work in the morning and the last to leave at night. Hard work creates chances.

    Never stop learning

The most powerful word in English language is “why”. There is nothing so powerful as an open, inquiring mind(探究精神). Whatever field you choose for starting a business — be a lifelong student.

    Give back

You are responsible for your success and failure, but you only succeed if you share the reward with others.

My first donation was a $ 5 check to my alma mater (母校) . And while the checks(支票)may be bigger today, they come with the same spirit.

You don't have to be wealthy to give back. You can give back by giving your time and talents.

Green Energy for Today and Tomorrow

Did you know that most of the energy we use comes from the sun? For example, the sun helps plants to grow. Plants that grew millions of years ago turned into coal, oil, and natural gas(天然气). We call these fossil fuels(化石燃料).

However, fossil fuels cause pollution. This is bad for the Earth. Fossil fuels are also nonrenewable. Some day they will be gone. So, scientists want people to use green energy.

Why is green energy important? First, it is clean. It doesn't hurt the Earth. Next, it is renewable. It won't run out. Green energy gives us almost 25% of the electricity we use today.

What are the main sources(来源) of green energy?

Water Power

Water power uses moving water in rivers and dams(堤坝). Moving water has energy. Water power makes

16.6% of the electricity we use.

Wind Power

Is wind power new? No, it isn't. People used wind power many years ago. Wind power makes 4% of the electricity we use.

Solar Power

Solar power comes from sunlight. The sun shines on solar panels(太阳能电池板), and electricity is made. Solar power is now as cheap as some fossil fuels. It makes

1.5% of the electricity we use.

Biomass energy(生物质能)

Biomass energy is energy that we get from plants around us. For example, dead wood or grass is burned in power stations. This makes electricity. Biomass energy is green energy because we plant new trees or crops(庄稼) after we use it. Biomass energy makes 2% of the electricity we use.

New Green Energy

The ocean rises and falls each day. This moving water can make electricity. We call it tide power. There is also heat under the Earth's surface. Scientists can use this heat for energy, which is called heat power. We may find other sources of green energy in the future.

Some day, green energy could make 100% of the electricity we use. That's good news for the Earth!

Christopher's mother now is sitting proudly and watching TV as Christopher is given the "Child of Courage" prize by his favorite TV star. This makes her remember the accident happened to them.

Christopher was sitting in the car with his mother, father, sister Rosie, 10, and brother Mac, 7, when his father drove onto a metal barrier(障碍物). Unluckily, the car fell down from a hill into a deep river. Christopher, then 12, swam through a broken window and got out for the fresh air. Then he realized his brother and sister were still in the car.

Christopher took a deep breath and swam back into the car. He saved Mac first, then he swam back to look for Rosie, who was under the cold, dark water, in the car. Christopher had to feel for her seatbelt because he couldn't see anything in the water. He took the seatbelt off her, and went up for air. Finally he went back to pull her out of the car.

Christopher's mother and father were thrown out before the car rolled down the hill. When his mother came back to her life, she looked for her children hurriedly. She could see Mac on the bank, but she couldn't find the other ones. She was so worried. Then she saw Christopher come up out of the water like a dolphin with Rosie on his shoulder. She shouted excitedly to Christopher down to the river, "I'm so proud of you. "

The family called for an ambulance (救护车). It took Christopher's father who was badly hurt to a nearby hospital immediately.

I am Alice. My sister and I spent our last summer holidays with our uncle who is a   geologist(地质学家) and loves to collect stones.

One day he bought us two backpacks and asked us to go to the mountain with him. We walked the whole day. Every now and then he put stones in our backpacks. To our surprise, he also took some stones out from them. But we thought he had just found better stones.

When we returned to the house, we were very tired. The backpacks were so heavy that we felt relief(轻松) when we took them off. Yet our uncle's backpack was half empty.

" Why did you give us so many stones?" we asked.

"I didn't. You did." he said." You didn't know it, but I gave you a little attitude(态度) test today.I listened to every word you said. Whenever you were complaining(抱怨),I added a stone to your backpacks. Every time you talked about something with positive(积极的) thinking, I took out a stone. And now look at your backpacks."

Our backpacks were full of stones.

" Your negative(消极的) thoughts are just like stones. You carry them____in your mind just like those stones in your backpacks. The more negative thoughts you have, the heavier your mind will be." said our uncle.

With great love, our uncle taught us one of the most important lessons in life— the power(力量) of the attitude.
