Some people say it is not easy for a middle-aged person to learn a foreign language. But is it{#blank#}1{#/blank#}（real）true? 

Several years ago, I worked for {#blank#}2{#/blank#}English newspaper which was doing such a research. They asked me to learn a new language for one month. Then I had to go to the country and do some "tests" {#blank#}3{#/blank#}（see）if I could "survive（挺过来）" in different situations. 

I chose Spanish（西班牙语）and did a one-month course at a language school and{#blank#}4{#/blank#}（find）that some Spanish words are very similar to English ones. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}example, hola isn't very different from "hello". Of course, there are other things which are more difficult. In Spanish you have to change the verbs（动词）for each person. But my{#blank#}6{#/blank#}（big）problem of all was the pronunciation. I found {#blank#}7{#/blank#}was very difficult to pronounce some letters in Spanish, especially r and j. So I had to download {#blank#}8{#/blank#}（sentence）onto my phone and I listened and practised them again and again. 

A month later I went to Spain. A Spanish teacher {#blank#}9{#/blank#}（call）Paula came and began the test. "Will I survive?" I wasn't sure enough but {#blank#}10{#/blank#}I wished I would!

Schools change PE classes to help students recover* from COVID-19*.

On March 17, Beijing made changes to the PE test in the 2023 zhongkao: All students will get good scores if they take the exam. 

Some cities such as Taiyuan canceled* the 1, 000-meter and 800-meter runs. Other cities like Wenzhou let students choose if they would like to run in the exam. This is to make it safe for students after recovering from COVID-19.

Knowing about your health

At the start of the term, every student in Xi'an Jingkai No. 3 Middle School did a survey*. 

The questions were:

●Did you get COVID-19?

●How many days did it take you to recover?

"The school wants to make a plan for the PE classes according to students' health. "said their PE teacher Liu Na. "Students feel differently after COVID-19. Some get tired easily, so we keepan eye on each student's feelings. "Liu said. 

"Students in Grade Nine are happy because they don't need to take the 1, 000-meter run test for zhongkao. Most students welcome this new change. But some students are really good atrunning, they are not happy because they won't have advantages anymore, "Liu added. 

Students now are having easier exercise such as dancing, fun games, sit-ups and walking. So they can improve* their health slowly. What is your PE class like now?

A: Hey, Daming. Did you watch the basketball match between China and Japan yesterday?

A: What was the score?

A: It was great. It was a pity that I missed it.

A: My brother hurt his knee yesterday so I had to stay in the hospital with him.

A: He went home today, but he still needs to stay in bed.

Mei mei: Have you been to the library recently?

Mei mei: How does borrowing books work there? {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

Han wen: It's pretty simple.  {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Then you can check out books for a few weeks.

Han wen: We can borrow up to five books at a time, which is pretty convenient.

Mei mei: {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

Han wen: You can renew them online as long as no one else has requested the same books.

Mei mei: That's great to know. I'll definitely check it out. 

Han wen: The library is a great resource for finding books we need.
