Born into a medical family, Amar, a 15-year-old boy, was expected to be a doctor, but deep down in his heart, he was eager to take up writing as his future career. He was in a great dilemma whether to pursue his dream or live up to his parents' expectation. until one day when his father gifted him a parrot.

The parrot had two hazy lines in her neck: black and red. Amar knew the hazy lines mark the stage of learning. "When there is a good teacher, how can his student be stupid" ,he used to believe. It was absolutely true.

Metto's cage was yellow with a big door and a shiny silver rod (杆) running through the centre. Metto's world was fantastic, surrounded by eight-foot white walls with some plum trees. And a lawn, with a palm tree in the middle, was dotted with multiple-color roses.

Back home from school every afternoon, Amar always slid the door of the cage up for Metto to set her free nearby the palm tree. Metto could set herself free because she learned how to slide up the door but she had never tried to do so. It was either love with Amar or, might be, she had never tasted the taste of a bigger world.

Amar always talked with Metto in Pashto (普什图语). Whenever Amar fished out peanuts from his pocket, Metto talked frequently "Toti choori khore" —parrot! Wanna eat choori. She had learned one more sentence after meeting with a friend belonging to jungle outside the white walls. She always said that at the end of meal "Da wakht bam teer she"—this shall to be passed, which Amar had never taught her.

Amar saw her friend coming daily and sitting in the plum tree nearby Metto's cage. He let them and did nothing. "The new one can never succeed in winning her. After all, I feed her well. She will never leave me", Amar murmured. But he didn't know the new teacher had taught her something the old one hadn't. It was the outer world with untouchable horizon.

注意:1. 续写词数应为 150个左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

One day, on the way to feed her, Amar was shocked at what Metto was doing.

……

短文续写

I always prided myself on being a wise shopper and having a good nose for bargains. So when I came across a sporting goods store with a sign “Going Out of Business Sale”, I marched into the crowded store. Up and down the aisles (通道), I wandered, humming to myself and enjoying the energy and excitement of a sale.

All of a sudden, there, at the back of the store sat a canoe(轻舟) exactly like my husband's dream Supremo Numero-Uno, whose picture had been stuck on the bathroom mirror for years. My heart beat wildly. I pushed my way through the crowds, and nearly fell into the canoe looking for the price tag. There it was, with the manufacturer's suggested price at $6,750 plus tax crossed out and a handwritten TO CLEAR $750 AS IS. Must be a mistake. $6000 off? Salesman. I had to talk to a salesman. I spotted a young fellow with a “Hi. I'm Mathew”. “Mathew. Tell me about this El Supremo canoe. What's wrong with it? Why is it only $750?”

“Oh. There's nothing wrong with it. It's brand new. We're closing the store. It's on clearance like everything else. I'll go check.” A few minutes later he came back and said, “I'm sorry ma'am. Someone made a mistake on the sale tag. It should be $4,750 for the whole package.”

I felt tears well up in my eyes. “Oh well”, I said sadly. “Of course, it was too good to be true. This is exactly like my husband's dreamboat. I guess I started to dream myself when I saw that price tag. He's going to be 62 years old Friday. Had to retire early for his health. It's been hard on just the pension but the stubborn old fool has been saving $10 every week for years to buy one just like this. I promise I won't buy anything, but it's just an old man's silly dream, you know. Always said he wanted to fish in a canoe after he retired,” my voice lowered and I turned and walked away.

Paragraph 1:

I was already at the mall door when Mathew caught up with me. “Do you have $750 plus $25 for delivery, ma'am?”

Paragraph 2:

“Ma'am. There's something you should know. This store was my Grandpa's and the canoe had been ordered by him.

It was Christmas Day. Pappy was working alone fixing an old lantern in the backroom when he heard the ringing of his bell on the shop door. The bell, which produced a uniquely pleasant sound, had been in Pappy's family for over a hundred years. He valued it dearly and enjoyed sharing its song with all who came to his shop. Although the bell hung on the inside of the main door, Pappy had tied a wire to the screen door so that it would ring whether the inner door was open or not. Hearing the bell, he left the backroom to greet his customer.

"And how can I help you, little lady?" Pappy's voice was joyful.

"Hello, sir." The little girl spoke almost in a whisper. She looked at Pappy with her big brown eyes, and then slowly scanned the room in search of something special. Shyly she told him, "I'd like to buy a present, sir."

"Well, let's see," Pappy said, "who is this present for?"

"My grandpa. It's for my grandpa. But I don't know what to get."

Pappy began to make suggestions. "How about a pocket watch? It's in good condition." The little girl didn't answer. She had walked to the doorway and put her small hand on the door. She shook the door gently to ring the bell. Pappy's face seemed to glow as he saw her smiling with excitement.

"This is just right," the little girl said. "Momma says grandpa loves music."

Just then, Pappy's expression changed. Fearful of breaking the little girl's heart, he told her, "I'm sorry, Missy. That's not for sale. Maybe your grandpa would like this little radio. "

The girl looked at the radio, bowed her head, and sadly sighed," No, I don't think so. "

In an effort to help her understand, Pappy told her that the bell had been his only companion, for the rest of his family were all gone now, except for his estranged (疏远的) daughter whom he had not seen for nearly a decade.

James, a 24-year-old investment banker from Toronto, was just one week into his new job on Wall Street. Over the past month, he'd been settling in to the New York City apartment he was sharing with his college friend, an artificial intelligence engineer named Raphael.

Now, last week, the two were going to meet in a lunchtime on Pier (码头) 15, overlooking the East River, when James froze. "Somebody's in the water," he said. Before Raphael could respond, James climbed over the rail (栏杆) at the edge of the pier and jumped into the cold, polluted water without taking the time to remove his shoes.

What James had heard was an alarmed fisherman shouting from Pier 16, nearly 50 yards away, "Help! He's in the water!" And what he'd seen was a person floating, lifeless.

Raphael didn't need to see the victim. Maybe James saw someone in the water who needs our help, he thought. Or maybe it's James who needs my help. Either way, I'm going in. He took off his shoes and dived.

Approaching the unconscious victim, James saw that it was a middle-aged man. He was big, around 200 pounds, respectably dressed and sinking fast. He was 3 feet below the surface by the time James reached him. The rescuer dived, felt around, grasped the man and kicked upward until they both got out of the surface. Raphael was there now. In the water, the two friends floated the man on his back. As Raphael put his arms around the man's shoulders and James supported the bottom and knees, the pair pulled the man back to Pier 15. Their lungs heaved and their muscles burned as they pushed and pulled the immobile figure through the water.

They might have been dragging a dead body. The man's skin was blue, and neither Raphael nor James detected any breathing. When at last they reached Pier 15, they faced a new uncertainty. How to get out of the water? The shore was half meter above their heads.

注意:1. 写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

On the pier, a crowd had gathered.

……

Suddenly the man moved, breathing again.

At one time children made May Day baskets to celebrate spring and enjoy the rewards of giving surprising gifts to their beloved ones. When I was in perhaps the third grade, our class took on such an adventure. For several days, we worked on creating paper baskets. We cut colorful stripes of construction paper and wove them together, following our teacher, Miss Anderson. We cut and wove and glued. Then we decorated them with our crayons and more cutting and gluing. Finally, we fitted paper handles onto the tops so that we could secretly hang our creations on the doors of unsuspecting receivers: surely our mothers.

We were finished right on time. Miss Anderson brought armloads of flowers for us to use in stuffing our prizes. Lilacs and tulips and al the colorful flowers of spring. We had to wait until the day was nearly over before we were allowed to choose the flowers that were just right for our baskets. I chose the biggest, most beautiful blossoms, allowing myself to be selfish for the sake of my mother. Then we fidgeted (烦躁) away what remained of our day, waiting for the clock to tick down the minutes to our release.

Finally, mercifully, the bell rang! We threw on our coats, gathered our homework and our lunch boxes, tied on our scarves and then, carefully, we cradled our offerings of love and off we ran to our individual homes! I was so excited! I ran as fast as I could down the hill, across the street, up the block, heading home. I paused at the corner of my house, to catch my breath and savor the moment. Then I glanced down to admire my offering one last time before I hung it lovingly over the doorknob. Horrors! Shock, dread and depression! My flowers were gone! Apparently, bouncing out on my mad dash home, all that was left was a sad, messed-up, wrinkled little empty basket! I stood on the doorway and burst into mournful sobbing tears.

By and by, my mom came to the door to discover the source of the sorrow.

Alvin Bamburg, 66, was deep in the woods in Grand Cane, Louisiana, last December when something caught his eye. Among the fallen branches and leaves, it looked like litter. But Bamburg was attracted and picked it up.

"God just told me, " he later recounted.

As he drew closer, he saw that it was a broken balloon. Attached was a piece of paper decorated with sparkly star stickers. It was a child's Christmas wish list.

"Dear Santa, " the handwritten note read. "My name is Luna. I am four years old. I live in Liberal, Kansas. This year I have been nice. I would like candy, Spider-Man ball, Frozen doll. With love, Luna. "

Bamburg's heart hammered in his chest. Ever since he was a child, he had dreamed of this very scenario. "Years ago, " he says, "classes at school released balloons with notes. I've always wanted to find one. "

He believed this was his childhood wish coming true. And he knew he was going to make Luna's wish come true too.

However, the task seemed impossible, as Liberal, Kansas, is more than 650 miles from Grand Cane, Louisiana. But Bamburg's wife, Lee Ann Bamburg, didn't mind the distance. As an enthusiastic Facebook user, she had seen other people find all sorts of connections through the site and thought it might help her husband find Luna.

The next day Alvin posted a photo of the balloon and the Christmas list on his Facebook page, asking for help locating the sender.

At first, he wasn't confident the strategy would work. But as he saw the number of shares and comments on his post climbed into the hundreds, his hope grew into expectation. "I knew we were going to find Luna. " Alvin said.

And indeed, they did.

注意:

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

One day Luna's mother came across the post.

When they arrived at Luna's home, the entire family was surprised.
