Once there was a parrot on sale in a pet store. It was a beautiful red and blue bird. It sat on a perch in the middle of the store, so that everyone could see it when they came in. The owner was very proud of it and asked a high price for it.

One day a man went into the store. “That's a beautiful bird,” he said to the pet store owner, “But why is it so expensive? Is it unusual bird?”

“No, it's not very unusual. It's expensive because it can talk,” the pet store owner said.

“I see. How can I make it talk?” the man asked.

The pet store owner asked him, “Do you see those string tied to each of the bird's legs?”

“Yes,”the man answered.

“Well, you pull those strings,” the pet store owner told him. “That will make the parrot talk.”

“Not at all,” the pet store owner said.

The man walked up to the parrot and pulled the string on its left leg. The parrot said, “Good morning.”

The man pulled the string on the parrot's right leg. This time the parrot said, “How are you today?”

“That's not very interesting, ” said the man. “Any parrot could do that.” Then he laughed, “But what would happen if I pulled both strings at the same time?”

“I'll fall off my perch, you fool!” the parrot said.

    Mr. Hunt came from a poor family. He had three brothers and two sisters. His father worked hard but wasn't paid much. And his mother did all the housework at home. They were both able but they couldn't get enough money for their family.
    Mr. Hunt was in school for only three years and he had to stop to help his parents though he was good at his lessons. When he was sixteen, he came to the city and began to work in a small factory. He learned from an old worker and became a skilled worker. The old worker liked him and married his daughter to him. The young man did not have his own house and had to live with his parents-in-law. His mother-in-law always thought he was poor and often chattered.     It was one fine Sunday. The old woman wanted to have a picnic on the top of the hill. She told Mr. Hunt to drive her car. But sometimes she told him to turn left and sometimes to turn right. The young man had to listen to her. At a crossing the lights were red but she made him turn left. The policeman stopped them and told the young man to give his license to him.
    “If I did wrong, sir,”said Mr. Hunt, "It was my mother-in-law's fault(过错). She was driving the car though she sat behind me!”

    A crow（乌鸦）is sitting in a big tree. She has a big piece of meat in her mouth.“My babies will have a nice breakfast,”she thinks. An old fox is looking for his breakfast. He sees the crow and the meat.“How can I get that piece of meat?”he thinks.
