Keeping an eye on London

    How about a ride on a big ferris wheel(摩天轮)? If you go to London, England, you'll find the largest look-out ferris wheel in the world the London Eye.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#}London Eye was open in 1999. It is 135 metres {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(height).  It{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (stand) on the bank of the River Thames, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}you can easily see the whole city from it.

    The London Eye {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(have) 32 capsules (舱). There is even air-conditioning(空调系统) in the capsules. The big wheel goes round very {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (slow), at about 0.26 metres a second. It {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (take) about 30 minutes to go all the way round.

This is a true story. There was a player1Jerry in the football team. He liked playing football, but he wasn't good at it. So he had few chances to play2his team. He felt very sorry for it.

One day, his father died from a terrible illness. He had to return home to deal with something. After that, an important3was going to begin. He found the coach at once, 4to attend the match. He was not good at skills, so the coach would not5him to take part in the match. But now, as he relented(心软), he agreed to let Jerry play for only three minutes. When the time was up, he would be changed by6.

    On the court，Jerry turned very agilely(敏捷地)7his practiced skills. He broke through the opposition line bravely. The coach was very satisfied with him. Three minutes 8, the coach made Jerry keep9on the court. Jerry continued his excellent10, leading the team11the match.

    The coach hugged him12and said, "Kid, you have never been so fast, so strong and so skilled. What happened on earth(究竟)?"

Jerry said, "My father is blind,13he has never watched my match. Now14to the heaven and finally can watch my match. As soon as I think of my father watching me, I am full of energy, and I feel confident, too. "

Tom came to his teacher and asked him, "Sir, I have a question. How many friends should a person have-one or many?"

"It is very simple," the teacher answered. "Get me that red apple from the highest branch（树枝）of the tree." Tom looked up and said, "It's too high! I can't reach it." "Ask a friend. Maybe he can help," the teacher suggested. Tom called another student and stood on his shoulders（肩膀）to reach the branch. "I still can't reach it, sir," said Tom sadly after the first try. "Don't you have more friends?" the teacher smiled. Tom asked more friends to come over. They stood on each other's shoulders, trying to make a human pyramid（金字塔）. But the apple was so high that they couldn't go higher and the pyramid fell. Tom still couldn't reach the apple. Then one of the friends went home, brought a ladder（梯子）and Tom finally picked the apple.

After getting the apple, the teacher asked, "So, do you understand how many friends a person needs?"

"Yes, I do," Tom said. "Many, so together we can work out any problem."

"Sounds good," the teacher said. "You need as many friends as you can. Among them, there will be at least one smart person who can think of a good idea, like getting a ladder!"
