They hang from trees.They float in rivers and oceans.They are piled up in landfills（垃圾填埋场）.Our frequent use of plastic products has，for many years，been a leading cause of serious environmental problems in the world.Last month，China drew up new guidelines（指导方针）aiming to bring plastic pollution under control across the country in five years' time. 

According to the new guidelines，the ban（禁令）on the use of non-biodegradable（不可生物降解的）plastic bags will have been applied to cities including Beijing and Shanghai by the end of this year.Other sources of plastic garbage will have been banned in these cities by the end of 2022.And that rule will have extended nationwide by late 2025. 

Fortunately，China will not start from zero.Late last year，the country announced a national standard for biodegradable plastic shopping bags.It is technologically prepared for their production.Some regions have gained valuable experience that others can learn from.For example，Jilin province is leading the way by providing eco-friendly（环保的）shopping bags in some local supermarkets. 

Given the size of China's consumer market，one main obstacle（障碍）is the large number of plastic items that are being used by restaurants and e-commerce（电子商务）platforms.It's estimated that nearly 25 billion plastic bags were used for deliveries in 2018.Most of them were rarely reused. 

However，most Chinese people welcomed the government's effort to reduce the use of plastics."Beijing is thinking about the problem seriously，"said Tang Damin，a member of Greenpeace East Asia in Beijing.He added that the policy could be far more effective（有效）by using incentives（激励）such as a deposit（押金）return program on plastic products.

Chinese dumplings are one of the traditional foods in China. They look like ancient Chinese gold ingots(锭), which mean"rich". Chinese dumplings were first invented(发明) by Zhang Zhongjing in the Han Dynasty. He first used them for medical purposes(目的). Zhang used dumplings with mutton(羊肉) for the patients'ear chilblain. 

As time went by, dumplings became popular in the north of China, and now making dumplings on New Year's Eve has become a Chinese tradition. On New Year's Eve, family members get together to make dumplings. They may put a coin(硬币) in one of the dumplings. If someone eats the coin, he or she will have the best luck in the coming new year. Chinese dumplings are also popular in other Chinese holidays or festivals. 

In the past, people couldn't often eat dumplings because they were very poor. But now Chinese people are richer and richer, so we can eat dumplings at any time. 

Almost everyone in China likes dumplings. There are many kinds of fillings in dumplings, such as dumplings with meat and vegetables, and some with sugar, eggs and seafood. I like dumplings with vegetables and pork better than any other kind, especially eating them with vinegar. 

Making dumplings is a teamwork. People usually make dumplings at home. If you have no time to make dumplings, you can buy them from any supermarket. But on Chinese lunar New Year's Eve, making dumplings with family members means happiness and reunion. And now many foreigners also like Chinese dumplings. They eat dumplings and even learn to make dumplings. 

I hope dumplings will be loved by people all over the world. 

Would you like to live in a city where buildings turn the lights on for you, and self- driving cars will find the nearest parking space themselves? Although it might sound a little far from you, living in a "smart" city like this could happen sooner than you think. 

Great changes have taken place in towns that we have lived in for centuries, while completely new cities are being built. One such place is the city of Songdo. Every home there will have a "telepresence" system(远程遥控系统) — allowing users to control the heating and locks, take part in video meetings, and receive education, healthcare and government services. Around the city, escalators(自动扶梯) will only move when someone is on them, and offices and schools will all be connected to the system. 

The great mind behind Songdo is from the company Cisco. In fact, technology companies around the world such as IBM, Siemens and Microsoft are already in the business. 

About 68% of the world's population will live in cities by 2050, so cities will need to be more modern to deal with the coming problems. "Making cities smarter is one way out, and I think this will in turn make cities greener, " said Dan Hill, the head of a research company. 

Sally is a little girl. She lives with her mother, father and brother. One day after school, Sally runs to her mother. "Mum! What is‘diversity'? " asks Sally. 

Her mother thinks and says, "You are from the UK, but your friend Jane is from the US. You are from different places. 

"I have red hair, but you have brown hair. You are a girl, but your brother Leo is a boy. You are both children but different. You are 8, Leo is 13, and I'm 37. We are of different ages. 

"You like the colour purple, but your brother likes the colour red. Your favorite colours are different. You like swimming, but your brother likes tennis. You both like sport, but your favourite sports are different. "

"I see!" Sally says. "Things are different and that is ‘diversity'. " Sally likes being different. She thinks it is fun.
