Yangshuo is a small county in Guangxi Province. It is 65 kilometres away from Guilin city centre. It is a world-famous place,  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}a history of about 1,400 years. Yangshuo is famous for{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(it) surprising karst(喀斯特地形) scenery. There're also beautiful mountains, caves and{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (temple) there. Local cafes and bars are also famous and it's{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(comfort) to stay there.

    The Lijiang River between Guilin {#blank#}5{#/blank#}Yangshuo is the most amazing. Tourists can try{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(hike) along the riverbank in Yangshuo and riding a bike back through the mountainous areas. There're many famous streets in Yangshuo. The one called West Street is {#blank#}7{#/blank#} oldest. Most of the buildings there {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(be) built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Most restaurant and shop workers on West Street can{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(speak) English.  Visitors can also try Western-style cooking when visiting Yangshuo.

    One Saturday afternoon, my daughter Alice asked me, "Are all people the same even {#blank#}1{#/blank#} they are different in color?" I thought for a minute and then I said, "I'll explain to you if we can make {#blank#}2{#/blank#}quick stop at the grocery store. I have something interesting to show you." At the grocery store, we {#blank#}3{#/blank#} some apples: red, green and yellow ones. Back home, I told Alice, "It's time to answer your question." I put one apple of each kind on the table. Then I looked at Alice, who had a strange look on her {#blank#}4{#/blank#}.

    People are like apples. They come in all different colors, shapes and sizes. Some of the apples may not even look like the others. As I was talking, Alice was examining each one {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Then, I took each of the apples and peeled {#blank#}6{#/blank#} with a knife, placing them back on the table, but in a different place. "Okay, Alice, tell me which is which." She said, "That's {#blank#}7{#/blank#}. They all look the same now." "Take a bite of each one and taste. See if that {#blank#}8{#/blank#}you decide which one is which." Smile came across her face, "People are just like apples! They are all different, but once you take {#blank#}9{#/blank#}the outside, they're pretty much the same on the {#blank#}10{#/blank#}."

    She totally got it. I didn't need to say or do anything else.

    One day, Confucius (孔子) led his students to the State of Chu. When crossing through a large forest, they saw an old man {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (stand) under a tree, catching cicadas (蝉) with a bamboo stick. Confucius said, "You are very good at {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (catch) cicadas. You must have some special skills."

    "That's right!" the old man answered. "The cicadas are clever little insects. If they hear the noise of the leaves in the wind, they {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (fly) away. Therefore, people who want to catch cicadas {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (train) their hands to hold a bamboo stick without shaking. If you can place three pellets (弹珠) on top of the bamboo stick without falling off, you might be able to catch cicadas; when five pellets {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (place) on top without falling off, catching cicadas is as easy as {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (pick) a ball up from the ground."

    He then added, "But that is not enough. People must be good at hiding themselves. Right now, I {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (stand) under a tree like half of a tree stump (树桩). Last of all, one must be attentive(专心的). When I am catching cicadas, I only see their wings. No matter what {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (happen), nothing will disturb me."

    Hearing this, Confucius {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (turn) to his students and said, "No matter what you do, you can only succeed if you love what you're doing and pay enough attention to it. This is what this old man {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (teach) us."
