Do you like watching films? What films do you like best? Here we introduce three Chinese films that were popular in 2023. 

"Everything happens for the best." Whenever things weren't going my way, my mother would say this to me.

After I finished college in 1932, I decided to find a job in radio as a sports announcer(广播员) . I went to Chicago and knocked at the door of every station. But unluckily, I got turned down every time.

In one station, a kind lady told me that big stations wouldn't hire (雇用) a person without any experience and suggested that I try my luck at smaller stations. Following her advice, I went back to Dixon, where I had grown up. There were no such jobs in Dixon, and my father said a newly-opened store wanted a local person to work for it. I wanted this job, but I was refused again.

"Everything happens for the best," Mum reminded me. Dad offered me the car to look for a job. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The programme director, Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.

As I left his office, I felt so frustrated. "How can I become a sports announcer if I can't get a job in a radio station?" I asked aloud.

While I was waiting for the elevator, I heard someone calling. It was MacArthur. "What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?" Then he asked me to have a try. He was pleased with my performance, and he offered me a chance to work there.

On my way home, I thought of my mother's words: "If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn't have happened without the failure before."

The Water Dragon Festival of Luodai has been celebrated for many years in Loodai Ancient Town in Chengdu. There is Hakka dragon dance in Luodai every year. 

There is a story about Luodai. In the Three Kingdoms period (三国时期). Liu Adou accidentally dropped his jade belt (玉带) into a well (井) in the town. Adou asked his servant to pick the jade belt from the well. Surprisingly, it began to rain when the servant was looking for the belt in the well. It stopped raining when he stopped that. Finally, the town was called Luodai. 

The Hakka connected the dragon dance with the story to wish for rain in Luodai. Then the Hakka danced water dragon and washed the well to thank god for rain and harvest(丰收) every year. It has become a tradition in Luodai. 

The Water Dragon Festival usually starts from the end of July to the end of August. During the time, there will be many kinds of water dragon activities every weekend. The dragon dance usually starts at two o'clock in the afternoon and lasts for about two hours. The dragon dance of the Liu family is the most famous one. The water dragon flies up and down in the streets. People splash(泼洒) water on the dragon dancers. People play with water together happily. Adults, children, Chinese, foreigners, men and women splash water on each other. Hakkas regard water as good luck and they splash water on others to wish others good luck. Laughter is everything. 

Have you heard the saying "Fall down seven times, stand up eight"? It means that however difficult things get and however many mistakes you make, have the passion and energy to keep going. This is called perseverance and it can help you achieve lots of things.

Perseverance means keeping doing something over a long time, even when the going gets difficult. It's believed that you can achieve a goal if you prepare to work for it. Practicing a trick (技巧) on your bike over and over again or finishing a picture without throwing it away and starting afresh shows perseverance. Florence, 11, says, "It means never giving up, being determined and trying hard to push yourself. I go running with my mom three times a week, even when I don't feel like it, because I want to be the fastest in my class."

Studies show that feeling hopeful and working towards a goal that you really want to reach can reduce stress and make you feel happier. Achieving something you've worked hard for, and overcoming challenges along the way, can also develop your confidence and make you feel braver to try new things. Angela Duckworth is an expert in thoughts and feelings. She studies perseverance, which she calls "grit (勇气)". Duckworth believes that it doesn't matter how talented, clever or rich you are, having grit is what really helps you succeed. She explains, no matter how gifted you are, and no matter how easily you do well in your lessons, you should have perseverance.

Duckworth believes perseverance is something anyone can learn, and the best way to do this is to have a growth mind. This means believing that your brain can grow, and that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. So instead of thinking, "I can't do this", try thinking, "I can't do this... yet". As the book The Big Life Journal says, "People with a growth idea know they can get better by working hard. They keep trying even when things are difficult."

①"Hey, want to do something great with old soft drink cans?""Sure, let's use them to go to the moon!"

②I know that sounds crazy. After all, you can't build an Apollo rocket from old soda cans. However, if you recycle enough cans, you can save as much energy as there is inside a real Apollo rocket. Enough power to reach the Moon!

③Soft drink cans are made of aluminum(铝). Making this metal requires a lot of energy. Aluminum begins as bauxite ore(铝土矿). The ore must be extracted(采掘), crushed(粉碎), and smelted(炼取). Producing soft drink cans needs about 1% of all the electricity used in the USA. Americans use more than 100 billion soft drink cans every year!

④Can we do better? Yes, we can, by recycling. While it takes lots of energy to produce new aluminum, it takes very little energy to turn old aluminum into new products. The metal is simply shredded(撕碎), melted(融化) and recast(再铸) into blocks(大块). By recycling, we can produce 20 soft drink cans using the same energy it would take to make just 1 new can.

⑤Nationwide(在全国), about 100,000 cans get recycled every minute. To be exact, in 90 minutes, the energy saved by rècycling is: E gained by recycling=2000,000 joules(焦耳, 能量单位)*9000, 000cans=18 trillion.

⑥That's a lot of energy. What can we do with that much energy? Can we reach the moon? It does sound crazy. But do you know how much energy do we need to send a rocket to the moon?

15.7 trillion.

⑦Now, compare two values for energy. See? The energy saved by recycling old soft drink cans is more than enough energy to send a rocket to the Moon. And we didn't even need a whole year of nationwide recycling—— just 90 minutes of recycling did it!

⑧Isn't it a fascinating way to think about recycling? Yet each time you save an empty soft drink can, it's almost like you' re helping to send a racket.
