The Big Ben is located in the tower at the eastern end of the Houses of Parliament, Westminster, Greater London. It was designed by Edmund Beckett and Baron Grimthorpe.

The Big Ben is very famous throughout the world, but nobody really knows why it is called Big Ben. There are two hearsays about this. Some people say that it was named after Benjamin Caunt, a boxer, who was called Big Ben. More people believe it was called after Welshman, Sir Benjamin Hall. He was the commissioner(特派员)of the work at the time of its installation in 1859. A story was told that during a debate in the Commons on what to call the bell, Sir Benjamin was about to give his ideas when a MP who sat behind the front bench shouted, "Let's call it Big Ben!" Then this name came into being.

The bell hasn't gone through a smooth road since the beginning of its design. Because there was great disagreement about the design of the clock. It took fifteen years to build. In 1857, the bell was completed and tested on the ground, but a four-foot crack appeared and the bell had to be cast again. Finally, the clock started ticking on 31 May, 1859, and struck its first chime(报时)on 11, July. Then in September, the bell cracked again. It was silent for four years but was eventually turned a quarter of a revolution(旋转). In this way, the crack was not under the striking hammer. Craftsmen made a square above the crack to stop it growing longer and it can still be seen today.

The Big Ben is famous not only for its 13-ton weight, but also for its accuracy(准确性) which is a result of its precise mechanism(机械装置). Even one extra penny's weight on the balance will cause a gain of two fifths of a second in twenty-four hours. Although there have been several problems, the bell is still striking today. Its chimes can be heard all over the world on the B. B. C.

Michael Jackson (1958-2009) spent many of his later years alone in a mansion called Neverland. The name “Neverland” is taken from the children's story Peter Pan.It's about boy who never grows up.Cruel critics of Jackson thought he was like Peter Pan,but that he was childish rather than childlike. They laughed at his taste, his clothes and his pet chimpanzee,Bubbles.

But perhaps Jackson acted like a child because he hadn't had a proper childhood. He began to work as a professional singer at the age of 9, performing with a group made up of his brothers.Besides working with this group. The Jackson Five,be also had a solo career. He didn't choose to make music like this;he was under a lot of pressure from his father and the music business. He started young and began to sell lots of records while he was still young. With this kind of pressure, who can blame him for living in his own way once he'd become an adult and gotten rich enough lo do what he liked?

His great originality came from the fact that he wrote, performed and recorded music that appealed to different communities. Before there had been “white” music and “black” music. But Jackson made “crossover” music, songs that had parts of funk, rock ‘n' roll and disco in them.He broke down a lot of barriers with this approach.A great example of this “crossover” style is the song Beat It.It has guitars like rock music, but it also has a beat like disco music.

If you look up the Beat It video on the Internet, you'll understand another reason for his fame.He made imaginative music that went well with equally imaginative videos.Beat It is,in part, about a war between young gangs. Jackson and his team made a great job of showing the rival gangs facing each other. You also see great dancing, and Jackson shows off his strong sense of fashion.Jackson was as much a video artist as a music artist.

This is why he was such a hit not just in the United States, but also globally.People loved his music and videos everywhere. He had a great effect on so many household names.Britney Spears,Justin Bieber and many others. In all of them you can find the combination of catchy danceable music and great videos that Jackson started. His music videos were must-see TV,and young would-be artists learned that it took more than just holding a microphone if they really wanted to make it big.

“When I was just starting out, many first producer used to make me listen to Michael Jackson's live performance of Who's Loving You

Five thousand square meters of old damaged cars, motorcycles and boats fill this junkyard. For a casual onlooker, this might be a very sad sight. But for Andy, it's a real treasure. “I've been a junk hoarder(囤积者)for my whole life and I like fixing up what shouldn't be thrown away. Around 200 old cars end up in this junkyard every week. Some of them are sold for parts, others get repaired, and still others are beyond repair.”

His father Bobby started the business some 50 years ago and still spends every morning there. The father and son have very different approaches to their work. They got a Dean cab that was getting thrown away and that was the father's project, which Andy did not want him to do.“ He did basically the opposite of everything I told him and I think he did it just to make me mad. He dumped a ton of money into this car, but in the end it wouldn't run.” Andy said jokingly.

The unusual family business attracted the attention of a TV crew. That's how the show Janka Empire came to be featured on a network of the Discovery Channel. This show, five years of shooting, five seasons and 60 episodes(集), is popular. “There are hundreds of junkyards throughout the United States. I think what's interesting is that it is a family business. My father and I started the business and we joke very well back and forth and I think that's what people like. The cars that end up at the junkyard come out with endless surprises. See, this was a junk car and we restored it with a blown motor. Yet I don't get a chance to ride around it too often. Because despite its shining appearance, the noise of the engine is truly deafening and I worry my neighbors will not put up with it.”
