In my thirty-year teaching profession  one of the best teachers I have ever known is Mr Rowe. I was lucky enough to teach fourth grade together with him.

Mr. Rowe had endless patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him. He could perform miracles, like the one he performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I had ever seen. Steven couldn't stand school. He didn't like being picked last for kickball. He didn't like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn't like himself.

The first day he walked into Mr. Rowe's classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbooks onto the floor.

Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven's shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr. Rowe welcomed him:" Hi, Steven. I'm happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year." Steven looked around the room as if Mr. Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom. So, while Mr. Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.

That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch (投球) the kickball during the break. "Hey, Steven," Mr. Rowe commented, "You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick." Mr. Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!

After the kickball, Steven sat as close to Mr. Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; when he knew the answer, he raised his hand; when he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr. Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful. It was obvious that Steven grew to love Mr. Rowe more and more with each passing day.

短文续写

I worked from the time when I was four and raised seven children, all of them college graduates. It seemed I'd done everything I'd ever wanted to do in my life, but I had one regret. I was born in 1898, the oldest of five kids. Papa couldn't spare me to go to school, so I worked in the fields with him till I was 21 years old.

Everywhere I went, I learned some hard lessons about what happens to a man who even can't read the alphabet. People cheat you out of wages. They sell you a ticket to one city, take your money and hand you a ticket to somewhere else.

By 1928, I'd been wandering for nine years. I met a woman named Elzenia. We fell in love, married and moved to Dallas, where I got work fixing roads for the city. When Amelia, the oldest of our seven children, first went to school, I took my wife aside. "Elzenia," I said. "I don't want the kids to know I can't read or write."

In 1938, one day my boss called me in. "George," he said. "No one knows those machines like you do. I'd like to promote you." But my thrill and surprise were cut short when he said, "Fill out this application and we'll get you a raise." I couldn't admit the truth. I thanked him and walked out of his office. I did stay right where I was, until I turned 65 and my boss made me retire. But I didn't stop working. For the next 25 years, I lived a happy life, but it still seemed to me like something was missing.

A young fellow handed me a piece of paper. It's information about adult education classes. People can learn to read and write. Now I'm 98. I thought of my friends and neighbours and what they might think if they found out I couldn't read. After all these years, my secret would be out. But all my life I've wanted to read. It was high time for action.

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.

This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money.

Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly jabbering about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night.

One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be.

The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say, "You're my knight in shining armor."

He was smiling and basking in pride, looking back at her as if to reply, "You got that right."

The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, "Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus."

The ticket lady quoted the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lip began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, "How much did you say?"

The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn't have enough money.

How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus?

Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I feel sorry for them.

The Butterfly in A Bottle

Poltu was awakened from a marvellous dream where he was about to receive the trophy for winning the inter-school football match. The alarm's loud ring jolted him,but he wasn't too disheartened.

He rushed to his study table where an empty jam bottle held a colourful little butterfly. Catching it had been a hard task as it kept avoiding his grasp,but finally he managed without a net. This butterfly was going to be part of his biology project in school.

The biology project required Poltu to submit the study of a living creature every month. Most of his classmates drew diagrams from their books as part of this exercise. But Poltu was going to do something different. He was going to present a live creature -this butterfly.

Poltu loved the different colours on the wings of the butterfly-red,green and blue. How beautiful it looked when it fluttered the wings. Poltu had been caring for it,making holes in the bottle cap for air and providing tender leaves for it to eat.

Excited about displaying his exhibit to the biology teacher,Poltu dressed hurriedly,and left for school. His school was walking distance from his house. He took a shortcut through the backyard of Sinha aunty's house,a stretch he loved walking through. The breeze was very pleasant as it had rained slightly the previous night. The garden smelt of sweet-smelling flowers. Poltu glanced at his bottle every now and then and smiled at the butterfly fluttering its wings.

When he reached school,the gate wasn't wholly open yet. For once,Poltu was early to school. A few boys were playing football on the field. Any other day would have seen Poltu joining them without a second thought. But today,he walked straight into his class. He opened the window and placed the bottle on the windowsill(窗台).

The golden rays of the sun streamed through the glass,on the delicate wings of the butterfly,and added brightness to them. Poltu's butterfly looked simply gorgeous. In a few minutes,the area was full of boys,watching it in surprise.

注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。

That day's biology class was the most interesting in a long time.

……

Suddenly,the butterfly didn't move.
