About 250 years ago, a man named Jonas Hanway, who liked traveling, went out for a walk along the streets in London. Every time he went out for a walk, no matter it rained or the sun shone hotly, he carried an umbrella over his head. Wherever he went, people looked and laughed at the strange man. Jonas Hanway was the first man to carry an umbrella in London, and everybody, but him, thought it was a very ridiculous thing.

But he seemed to be a brave man, and decided not to give up his umbrella even if all the people in London made fun of him. Perhaps, in imagination, he saw the future, tons of umbrellas—umbrellas enough to protect the whole land of England from rain.

But Jonas Hanway wasn't the first man in the world to carry an umbrella. He had traveled a lot and had seen umbrellas in China, Japan, India and Africa, where the umbrellas had been in use for so many years that nobody knows when the first one was made. And as one of the oldest and greatest cities in the long history, Nineveh hada great many sculptures(雕塑) on which there were umbrellas. Umbrellas can also be seen on the monuments(纪念碑) of Egypt, which are very very old as well. History will tell you that Nineveh was built not long after the flood(洪水). Perhaps it was the great rain, of forty days and forty nights, that gave people in Nineveh the idea of making an umbrella!

(2)、What does the underlined word "ridiculous" probably mean in Chinese?

(3)、How did the writer explain Jonas Hanway wasn't the first man in the world to carry an umbrella?

A、Nineveh is a very modern city with a short history. B、Umbrellas have nothing to do with Japan or India. C、It was unusual to see umbrellas in London 250 years ago. D、People invented umbrellas after seeing them on sculptures.

School started again, and soon the ink(墨水)in Tom's spelling book was found. Tom said he hadn't split the ink, but that made it look as if he were lying. Becky almost said Alfred Temple had done it, but she kept quiet. She thought that Tom would tell the teacher about her tearing(撕)his book, so she didn't save him. Mr Dobbins beat him and then Tom went back to his seat。

After an hour Mr Dobbins unlocked his desk and took out his book, Tom looked over at Becky. She looked like a hunted and helpless rabbit. The next moment the master faced the children. There was a long silence, then he spoke, "Who tore this book?"

There wasn't a sound. The teacher searched their faces.

"Benjamin Rogers, did you do it?"

Benjamin said no.

"Joseph Harper, did you?"

Joseph also said no. Dobbins looked at the rows of boys, thought for a moment, then turned to the girls.

"Amy Lawrence?"

A shake of the head.

"Gracie Miller?"

The same sign.

Becky was next. Tom was shaking from head to foot.

"Rebecca Thatcher?"—(Tom looked at her face; it was white with terror)— "did you tear?—no, look at my face—did you tear this book?"

Tom jumped to his feet and shouted, "I did it!"

The children stared(盯着) in surprise at his foolish act.

And when he stepped forward for his punishment, he saw the surprise, the thanks, and the love that came from Becky's eyes. This was enough for one hundred beatings. And he didn't even mind staying for two hours after school, because he knew that Becky was waiting for him outside.

Tom went to bed that night planning some actions on Alfred Temple, for Becky had told him everything. And he fell asleep with Becky's last words to him in his ear, "Tom, you are so great!"

BEIJING, May 28, 2024 (Xinhua News)—The Shenzhou-18 crew (全体工作人员) completed the first spacewalk of their mission (任务) at 6:58 p.m. (Beijing Time) on Tuesday, according to the CMSA (中国载人航天局).

The two members of the Shenzhou-18, Ye Guangfu and Li Guangsu, started their spacewalk. They worked outside the Tiangong space station for nearly 8.5 hours. With the help of space equipment (设备) and a team on Earth, they successfully completed many tasks during their spacewalk, including some difficult fixing tasks. Now they have returned to the Wentian lab module (实验舱). The third crew member, Li Cong, stayed inside Tiangong to provide support.

The Shenzhou-18 crew has set a new record for the longest single spacewalk by Chinese astronauts.

This marked Ye's second time to have a spacewalk, and his first spacewalk was in the Shenzhou-13 mission, but this is the first time for Li Guangsu to start a spacewalk.

The mission will include many tasks. First of all, the three members will do a series of space science experiments (实验) and many necessary tests. And then, they will carry out more activities and do some fixing work outside the space station. The three astronauts will work on board Tiangong until late October, according to the CMSA.

So far, Chinese astronauts have successfully carried out 15 spacewalks in all. On September 27, 2008, astronaut Zhai Zhigang in Shenzhou-7 mission made history as China's first person to take a spacewalk, which lasted about 19 minutes.

The Shenzhou-15 crew has achieved a milestone (里程碑) by having 4 spacewalks, marking the highest number of spacewalks by a single Chinese astronaut crew.

The Shenzhou-17 members completed, for the first time, the repair work to keep the equipment in good condition during their second spacewalk, which lasted about 8 hours.
