One cloudy afternoon, a seven-year-old girl went for a walk. She crossed a large area of grassland into the woods before she realized that she was lost.

The woods are remnants(残余) of a huge forest which once covered the whole area, which were designated an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Sitting on a rock and wondering what to do, she began crying. A slight breeze was stirring the branches. The flowers were gently swaying in the breeze. It is quiet around her and she listened to the nice chirping(鸣叫) of insects, which is waving and faint, just like a Buddhist melody. After a while, she decided to walk along a wide path lined with tall trees and thick bushes.

When it was getting dark, she saw a small, dark wooden house. Above the cottage the fir-trees gently swayed and rustled in the breeze.

She opened the door and cautiously stepped in. Suddenly, she heard a strange noise, and she ran out the door and back to the woods. She was seized with panic.

She had wandered about long enough to feel too tired to wander any farther. Cold and tired, she fell asleep near a stream.

The girl's parents were out and her dog, Laddy, was at home. Laddy sensed that his mistress was in danger. He jumped through a window, breaking the glass. He looked in the fields, but he couldn't find his mistress anywhere.

BEIJING, March 15 (Xinhua) — Premier Li Keqiang on Sunday called on the Chinese people to read more and promised that the policy of encouraging reading will again be part of next year's government work report.

“Reading is what I enjoy the most in my spare time. It makes me feel wealthy, and it has been the most rewarding experience in my life,” he told reporters after the conclusion of the annual legislative (立法的) session.

It is worrisome, however, that the average per capita (人均) amount of reading in China is only one-tenth of that of some other countries in the world, Li said.

“I hope that our people could foster a love of reading, and our people's amount of reading could rise. It is a very important symbol of further cultural and social progress.”

Reading can not only unlock potential for innovation, but also enhance civic morality, he said, adding that encouraging reading will be part of next year's government work report again after featuring it for two consecutive (连续的) years.

This year's government work report, which Li delivered to national lawmakers on March 5, said China will “ensure that more outstanding works of literature and art are created for the people to enjoy, and encourage a love of reading in all people to build a nation of avid readers.”

One day, my brother and I were alone in our apartment. The reason was that my parents had both gone for a ball party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. All of a sudden, the doorbell rang. Ding-Dong! Ding-Dong! My younger brother had rushed to the door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.

Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and he said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.

Without any thinking, my brother said, “No.” He asked if we would like to buy some comic books, which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents' permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention to enter our house.

Then, I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother's hands with some rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but I tied it in a special way so my brother could untie himself as we often did. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in thekitchen.

Soon, he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable. I managed to teach my brother to untie the roop on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but line was dead.
