阅读理解

It was one o'clock in the morning when I at last succeeded in creating life.

As I looked at the lifeless human being, I saw one eye slowly open. Then he began to breathe and move his arms. At first, I thought he would be a fine-looking man. He had yellow skin, black hair and very white teeth. Unluckily, his eyes were watery, and his lips were thin and colorless. I soon realized that there was nothing beautiful about him. I ran out of the room, disgusted(恶心) by the creature I had created. I tried to sleep, but for hours I could not. Then, when I did get to sleep, I had bad dreams. When I awoke the next morning, I did not want to return to my laboratory and the monster I had created. I went for a long walk until I came to an inn. There, to my pleasure and surprise, I found my friend, Henry Clerical. "Tell me about my family," I asked him. "And Elizabeth, How is she?"

"They are all well, Frankenstein," he said. "But you do not look well; my friend. Your eyes look as if you have not slept for many weeks."

I knew this was true. "I have been so busy," I explained, "that I have been working without rest." Henry walked back with me to my department. I did not want him to, but I could not stop him. I was afraid that the creature I had left there might be alive and walking about. When we reached my apartment, I asked Henry to wait outside for a few minutes. I did not explain why. I slowly opened the door and entered the room. To my surprise, it was empty. The creature had gone. I was so overcome by

the feeling that I fainted. I was ill for many months.

During my illness, Henry was my only nurse. He heard me talking in my sleep about a monster. At first, he thought I was just having a bad dream, but then he realized that something very bad happened in my life. At last, I began to get better.

Several times each year the Queen gives afternoon tea parties at which guests are served tiny cakes filled with cream from her own cows. Cakes and sandwiches are bought in by footmen, yet you never see the Queen touch a thing. She

simply sits beside a big silver plate, pouring cups of tea for everyone and carefully avoiding the cakes.

At cocktail parties the Queen moves from group to group, chatting informally, and manages to make one glass of diet drink to last a whole evening. Tours abroad are difficult because hosts seem to believe the warmth of their welcome must be shown with wonderful state banquets(宴). But the Queen has perfected the art of appearing to enjoy her meal without actually eating much. During one visit to the Pacific islands of Tonga, a specially-prepared dinner was set up in   a hut made of wood and bamboo leaves. Deep holes were dug in the ground, filled with hot stones and baby pigs, and the pigs were slowly cooked with dry heat over several days. The Queen looked uneasily at her plate when she discovered a   whole roast(烤) pig was her serving.

Then she became uneasy when a turkey, some meat, bananas and an apple were also carried in for each guest. So she depended on her old favourite trick of talking with her host, King Tupou IV, carrying on a warm conversation. At the same time she pushed her food around her plate and only ate a piece of turkey and some fruit.

Reporters traveling with her have noticed that the Queen will sometimes seem so interested in a foreign leader's political(政治的) chat that she simply never has time to finish a meal before it is time to get up and make her speech. She will lift her fork, then put it down again to make another point, leaving almost all of her meal untouched.

A) 先阅读短文,掌握其大意,然后从各小题所给的A、B、C、D在四个选项中选出可以填入相应空白处的最佳答案。

When I moved to America in the 7th grade, I did not speak any English. I had no choice but to keep working hard. Although I made 1 when I reached the 9th grade, people still found it difficult to understand me because of my accent (口音).

One day, at a party, I was invited to play a guessing game. When it was my turn, I tried to 2 the object that I had in mind. Suddenly someone said with a laugh, "What did she say?" I felt 3 . Out of kindness, a girl gently advised me to repeat it, but I got stuck on the word "purple"—I couldn't 4 it. This time, everyone laughed while I was trying hard to get the word out of me. This 5 had its own influence on me. When opportunities were opened up for the summer program I had been looking forward to, I 6 to attend (参加) the interview. Luckily, I got tons of encouragement from people around me. So I decided to 7 .

At the interview, the other students in my group spoke very 8 but I didn't speak that much. I knew that I could hardly be understood because of my accent. Besides when I was nervous, it would be even more 9 for me to pronounce words clearly. After the interview, I stayed, said "10 " and explained to the teachers. I didn't want them to think I wasn't interested or I was being unfriendly. But they appreciated (欣赏) that I expressed 11 . "It's OK. You don't have to say sorry. Your accent does not make you less than others," said one of the teachers.

Surprisingly, I was accepted into the 12 . Imagine how I felt!

Up to now, I still feel 13 that I took that step. It is a sign that I have changed. I did not let my accent 14 me. I'm sure I will continue to feel nervous about speaking English with strangers. 15 that's OK. It will not stop me from trying to be better.

 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入一个适当的词,或填入括号中所给单词的正确形式。

I will never forget the Art Festival in my high school when I won a big prize. All my teachers and classmates think I have a gift for {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(paint). However, when I was a pupil in primary school, I did not like art lessons because I could not draw very well. In fact, my drawings were much {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (bad) than most of my classmates

One day, while I {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (play) with some paints, Ms. Smith's art lesson began. I mixed the paints with water as usual. As I took the brush away, I {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (drop) the paints onto the paper. Looking at the mark, I decided {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (blow) it. The paints began to run, and I blew harder. The paints ran in all {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (direction) quickly and made a very interesting picture! I forgot that I was in class {#blank#}7{#/blank#} Ms. Smith came by my desk. With a big smile on her face, she said, "That's {#blank#}8{#/blank#} very good picture, Sandy. " After class, she encouraged {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (I) to keep trying and make more pictures. I made a lot of {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (wonder) pictures later with her help. Since then, I have been crazy about crayons and paints. I enjoy myself in the world of colors every time I paint.
