Canada is the second-largest country in the world, with almost 10 million square kilometres of landmass. Due to (由于) its size, it is divided into four different regions(地区).

    The Atlantic Provinces

Fishing is the old industry in this region. Agricultural crops, such as fruit and potatoes, and forests, which produce paper and lumber(木材), form part of the industry. Traditionally depending on fishing and farming, they are developing other natural resources, such as oil and copper.

    Central Canada

Ontario and Quebec form the industrial and manufacturing (制造业的) heart of Canada. They produce three quarters of Canada's goods. More than half of Canada's population lives in the cities in the southern part of Ontario and Quebec. Most of the people living in Quebec speak French.

    The West Coast

The British Columbia Coast is Canada's western continental coastline (海 岸 线 ). Europeans settled (定 居 ) in British Columbia in the early 1800s. The railroad built by the government in the late 1800s made moving much easier. Thousands of Chinese came to British Columbia during this period to work on the railroad. British Columbia has the most valuable forest industry in Canada.

Salmon (鲑鱼) fishing is not only a popular sport, but also an important part of the industry. Pacific salmon are exported (出口) all over the world.

    The North

The Yukon and the Northwest Territories (领土) cover a third of Canada. This huge region has a very small population. Most of the people are natives. There are several native languages, which are equal (平等的) in status (地位) to English and French. During the Gold Rush at the end of the 1800s, thousands of miners (矿工) came to make their fortune (财富). Mining is still an important industry in this region.

(1)、What's the old industry in the Atlantic Provinces?
(2)、What language do most of the people living in Quebec speak?
(3)、Why did thousands of Chinese go to British Columbia in the late 1800s?

Reading books is a good hobby for all kinds of reasons. First, reading books is fun. You can always keep yourself happy if you like reading. This is especially useful when the weather is bad. It is a relaxing hobby, too. You can really become lost in a book.

Next, you can read a book almost anywhere: in a car, in a waiting room, on a plane, in bed — even in a bath. All you need is a book. Reading is a convenient(方便的) hobby as it is easy to stop and then start again.

Another good reason for reading books is that it is useful. If you keep reading as a hobby, you will get better and better at it. This means that you will read faster and will become better at understanding what you read. As your reading improves, you will find that your schoolwork becomes much easier.

Some people say that reading is out of date. This is not true. You have to be able to read on the Internet. And the better you read, the better your computer skills will be. Reading is hardly (几乎没有)out of date!

Good readers are most likely to be good writers, too. They are usually good at spelling as well, and have more things to write about.

Reading books is a wonderful hobby, one of the best. What other hobbies could be more useful or more enjoyable?

Say you're sitting around with some friends playing video games and someone mentions a game that happens to be one of your favorites. "Oh, that game's easy. So not worth the time. "one of your friends says. The others agree. Although you enjoy the game quite a lot, not wanting to argue with them. you go along with the crowd.

You have just experienced what is commonly referred to as peer pressure, also called peer influence. You will adopt a certain type of behavior, dress or a attitude in order to be accepted as part of a group of your "ears". As a teen, you are likely to have experienced the feet of peer pressure in a number of different areas.

We are all influenced by our peers at any age. For teens, as school and other activities take you away from home, you may spend more time with your friends than with your family. As you become more independent, your peers naturally play a greater role in your life.

According to Dr. Casey from Cornel University, teens are very quick and accurate in making decisions on their own and in situations where they have time to think. However, when they make decisions in the heat of the moment or in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by factors like peers,in a recent study, teen volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching. The researchers discovered that the number of risks teens took more than doubled when their friends were watching, compared with when they played alone. This shows that teens may find it more difficult to control risky behavior when their friends are around, or in situations where they are extremely angry.

Just as people can influence us to make unwise choices, they can also influence us to make good ones. A teen might join in a volunteer project because his or her friends are doing it, or get good grades because his or her friends think getting good grades is important. In fact, friends often encourage each other to study, or try out for sports.

While we are always influenced by those around us, the decision to act or not is up to us. So when it comes to decision making, the choice is up to you.

Let's face it—money isn't always easy to come by, especially when you haven't got a job and your parents don't give you an allowance(补助). And at the weekends, you might want to shop, eat at a restaurant or see a film. That all adds up! But no money doesn't mean no fun! Here's a list of some of our favourite ideas for "free time"!

    ▲

Go out to libraries, and look at the noticeboards there. You might see a sign for a free concert in the park or a poem reading. Your library or community centre might offer free activities, such as language lessons or film nights. Bring your friends and try something new!

    ▲

No money for a film night? No problem! Nature puts on an even better show. Find a quiet space outdoors, spread a blanket(毯子)on the ground and look up at the night sky. Use apps to help you find stars and constellations(星座). Add music to make it more enjoyable.

    ▲

If you haven't got money to go to a film, just make one! Write a script(剧本).(This is more fun if several friends join in. ) Find old clothes and household items to use as costumes(服装) and props(道具). (Ask your mom and dad first, of course.) Practise, and then film it with a phone or tablet(平板). When the film's ready, host a viewing party!

    ▲

Get a group of friends together and volunteer. You'll feel great and you'll have a great time doing it. Look for opportunities in your community. Pick up litter, clean up an animal house or visit a home for the old people. Helping out can make others happy, and what's more fun than that?

The Double Ninth Festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. In the past, people climbed high mountains, drank chrysanthemum(菊花)wine, and wore a plant called zhuyu to celebrate it. Both of the plants are regarded as clean plants that can clean houses and cure disease.

Diwali(排灯节)is a festival of light in India. It falls in October or November. People will light lamps and candles. Then they put them around the houses and streets. Fireworks are a big part of the festival. There are candies and other snacks. Kids will get presents from their family and friends.

The Ami is an old tribe in Taiwan. Every autumn, people hold a Harvest Festival to thank the gods for all the good things. It is also the time to pray for good health and harvest in the coming year. Ami people wear their bright traditional clothes. The activities include bike tours, a parade(游行), singing and dancing.

In Venice, you can find many boats instead of cars there. A boat festival takes place every first Sunday in September to honor a girl who gave up her chance to rule a country but came back to Venice. On that day, hundreds of colorful boats sailed along the Grand Canal(大运河). There was also a boat race to celebrate the festival.
