Forgetful Nick

After school on Friday, when Nick got home, he saw Grandpa's car! Nick smiled and walked quickly up the front sidewalk.

He reached the door and said hello to Grandpa. Then Mom called from the kitchen. "Put away your schoolbag first."

Nick's smile vanished(消失). "Oh, no," he said, "I forgot to bring my schoolbag home."

Mom was angry. "Nick, you forgot your schoolbag again! You need to be more careful!"

Grandpa turned to Nick and winked(眨眼), "I'm afraid you inherited(遗传) your forgetfulness from me, Nick. Your grandma used to call me 'Forgetful Jones'."

Grandpa's words made Nick feel a little better. But he still felt mad at himself.

After dinner, Grandpa suggested going for a walk. As they walked around the corner, Grandpa said, "I'll tell you a little secret, Nick. We're the same. We like to do things, make things and have fun! That's why we sometimes forget things."

"But Grandpa, how did you stop forgetting? How can I stop forgetting?" Nick asked.

"Well," said Grandpa, "I know a few tricks(窍门). I use them to help me remember important things. For example, it's important to turn off my car lights when I park the car. So every time I get in the car, I put my notebook in my lap(大腿)."

"I saw it!" said Nick. "I always wondered why you did that!"

"Now you know my secret," said Grandpa, "It's a simple little trick, but it works. Why don't we put our heads together and come up with a schoolbag-remembering trick?"

For better research and protection, elephants in the reserve (保护区) should wear GPS collars (项圈). Last June, it was Rommel's turn to wear a collar. He was a huge and bad-tempered elephant, weighing about six tons. One morning, searching around the reserve, we found Rommel playing by the river. A tranquillizer (镇静剂) was carefully shot into his bottom so that we could safely place a collar on him. Normally it takes seven minutes for the drug to act, but for Rommel's size it could take longer.

He was crossing the river when the drug did work. Slowly, he fell down into the water. This could lead to a disaster- Rommel's death, because his trunk would be submerged (淹没) in the river.     ★     . Only by doing this could we ensure his survival. The problem was that the river was deep and filled with crocodiles (鳄鱼).

In a flash, I decided to act. I jumped in and lifted his heavy trunk above the water. The water level reached my neck.

I stayed there for at least 10 minutes as the team tried to fit him with the collar. It was rather hard to keep my cool as my arms became exhausted. Small fish swam past my legs. Each time, fear hit: was it a crocodile? There was also another risk that other elephants might come and cause trouble.

As soon as his ears started to flap—a sign of consciousness (意识) returning—I dropped his trunk and moved to safety. Then he completely awoke and crossed the river. What a wonderful moment, for both him and me!

Studying too much?

Most people work or study from Monday to Friday. The weekend is usually a time of rest. But today's Chinese teenagers can hardly rest during the weekends.

According to a survey, 24% of the Grade 8 students in Beijing have classes at the weekend. Over 40% of the middle school students have less than eight hours' sleep each night because of study.

And this doesn't happen only in Beijing. Ji Chunying is a Grade 9 student in Guangzhou. The 14-year-old girl has to get up at 6:45am on Saturday. Then she has classes all the day. On Sunday, she goes to extra(额外)classes for math and physics. But Ji doesn't complain. She says her classmates all work very hard.

Finding time to have fun

Zhao Ming, 13, is from Zhenjiang, Guangdong. Zhao's weekend is less busy. But he still spends Saturday in school. On Sunday, after finishing homework, he plays basketball. "I feel happy because I still have time to do the things I like. " he said. Some students are much luckier. Ding Yi, a grade 8 student from Laiwu, Shandong, is one of them. During the weekend, Ding usually gets up at 8:00a. m. . Then she spends some time doing homework. After that she is free to go shopping or watch TV. "My teacher says I don't need to push myself too much. " Learning well at school is enough, " Ding said. "I feel pretty lucky. "
