If you visit the animal shelter (收容所) in Salinas, California, you'll see huge signs that have a picture of a dog and a cat on them. These {#blank#}1{#/blank#} are put in front of the shelter to catch people's attention. The signs{#blank#}2{#/blank#} people interested in the shelter and encouraged them to visit it and maybe even take a cat or a dog into their homes.

     Each year, the Salinas shelter accepts thousands of dogs and cats. The animals are {#blank#}3{#/blank#} lost ones or are left by people who can't take care of{#blank#}4{#/blank#} _. Of all the animals, some of them are taken into new homes. Some {#blank#}5{#/blank#}  are moved to other shelters. And, unluckily, some cannot be saved because they are too sick or are thought to be dangerous.

      Animal shelters {#blank#}6{#/blank#}  food, medicine, and safe places for animals. But they are not the {#blank#}7{#/blank#}  homes. The animals stay in small cages (笼子). The people{#blank#}8{#/blank#}  work at shelters do their best to care for the animals, but the animals do not always get the attention or exercise they need.

      To prevent animals from becoming homeless, pet owners should take good care of their pets. Most pet doctors also suggest people make {#blank#}9{#/blank#}  their pets have a special surgery ( 外科手术). It{#blank#}10{#/blank#} _ animals from having more babies. And that reduces（减少）the number of homeless animals.

    David is an English school boy. His school is not far{#blank#}1{#/blank#} his home. He usually takes a bus to school. But he's often{#blank#}2{#/blank#} for school.
It's a fine day today. David gets up{#blank#}3{#/blank#} . He has breakfast, and then he{#blank#}4{#/blank#} to the bus station. He takes a bus at seven o'clock. His {#blank#}5{#/blank#} begin at half past seven. But today he is also late. Do you know why? Because he takes a wrong bus!

    Chinese people are proud of their food. However, when foreigners like Britons think of Chinese food, their impressions (印象) of {#blank#}1{#/blank#} are different from what you might think.

    I grew up in the UK. The Chinese food I was used to {#blank#}2{#/blank#}was food from Guangdong. For example, a(n){#blank#}3{#/blank#} dish I would order would be sweet and sour pork (糖醋排骨). This is the type of food we generally eat {#blank#}4{#/blank#} lots of Chinese immigrants (移民) to the UK have come from Guangdong.

    Something is changing, though Chinese-American cook Ken Hom has been{#blank#}5{#/blank#}British TV for 30 years, and he said, “At the beginning of the 1980s, Chinese food was sweet and sour pork, mainly … Now you are seeing more Chinese food from Sichuan, Hunan and other {#blank#}6{#/blank#}of China. It is no longer just Cantonese food.”

    What do foreigners think when they come to China and taste real Chinese food? You'll be glad{#blank#}7{#/blank#} that in my experience, the impressions have been very good.

    My personal favorite is Yunnan food. And every foreigner I've eaten it with was{#blank#}8{#/blank#} by the different flavors (风味) when they try it.

    One of my friends{#blank#}9{#/blank#}in Yunnan for a year. She says she still hasn't had “proper Yunnan food” since then. That's the{#blank#}10{#/blank#}when you finally eat real Chinese food—you become picky (挑剔的)!

    Once upon a time, a father and his son were walking from one town to another. While they were {#blank#}1{#/blank#}, they happened to pass by a river. They were tired and stopped there to {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. Then the father asked his son to get him some water from the river.

    Then the son walked to the riverside and he {#blank#}3{#/blank#} some women washing clothes there. Right at that moment, a bullock cart(牛车) started crossing the river. As a result, the water became very dirty. "I mustn't take the dirty water to my father," he thought. So he came back and said," Look, Father. A bullock cart is {#blank#}4{#/blank#} the river now, so the water is dirty and it can't be drunk." Father said nothing.

    After a while, the son was {#blank#}5{#/blank#} to get some water again by his father. The water was still dirty, but he didn't go back. He thought," My father is so thirsty. I must {#blank#}6{#/blank#} back clean water this time, even though it will take me a long time." Then he sat there, waiting until the water was clean. He collected some in a bowl and took it back.

    "Oh, you are back at last. I have {#blank#}7{#/blank#} for you for almost half an hour," Father said. After {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the water, he looked up at his son and said, "Now, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} about what made the water clean. You let it be and the water became clean on its own. It is also the same with your mind. When it is disturbed(打扰) ,just let it be, and it will calm down on its own. "

    The son thought for a while and said, "Thank you, Father. I will {#blank#}10{#/blank#} this forever. "

    We can make best decisions when we stay calm.
