Two years ago, Jo acted as a teacher in Papua New Guinea. There was no electricity, water or textbooks in the school. When she knew that the students {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (die) to learn chemistry, she tried to show {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (they) chemistry experiments every week. Sometimes, she doubted whether chemistry was relevant{#blank#}3{#/blank#} these students, because most of them would go back to their villages. Actually, they had no{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (person) ambition. The local people had a hard life. Their hut was so dark that it took time for one's eyes {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (adjust). The only possessions {#blank#}6{#/blank#} could be seen were one broom, a few tin plates and cups and a couple of jars. They didn't speak much of the local English dialect. When {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (sit) around, she loved listening to them softly talking to each other in their language{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (occupy) with teaching, she had no time for social{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (activity). Instead, she often joined in their family party. She felt it was {#blank#}10{#/blank#} privilege to spend a day with them.

    In 1940, four teenage boys and their dog were walking through woodland close to Lascaux, when their dog suddenly disappeared. The boys searched all around. They came to a cave and looked into the cave{#blank#}1{#/blank#} could see nothing.

    A few days later, the boys returned to the cave. They could hardly believe {#blank#}2{#/blank#}eyes. In the weak lamplight, the boys saw red horses and cows, and black bulls and deer charging across the walls of the cave, which looked so {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(frighten) that the boys jumped back in fear. Little did the boys know that they had made one of the most important{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(discover) of that century.

    The Famous Lascaux Caves consist of a large hole and{#blank#}5{#/blank#} series of connecting caves, with a natural water system. The paintings there were an especially important find because they are so numerous and so well preserved. After a few years, the caves were opened{#blank#}6{#/blank#} a tourist attraction, and 1,200 people per day came to the site{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(admire) the paintings{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (fortunate), many visitors resulted in changes in the cave's atmosphere, and green algae (水藻) began to grow around the walls. Since then, the caves {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(close) to the public in an effort to conserve the fragile paintings in this precious underground site.

    Today, the caves have computer-controlled air-conditioning and are inspected daily. Scientists hope that these precautions will prevent any{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(far) damage to the paintings.

    The year of 2014 was pretty tough for Stevens. Unfortunate{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(event) happened to him one after another. He lost all his wealth and couldn't pay for his insurance, but there was even {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(bad) news to come. He had skin cancer, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}made him ready to give up.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(lucky), he managed to find a job later and moved into a new home. It was then that Stevens seemed to turn a corner and realized his life was still worth {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(fight) for. He wrote in his blog, "My wife had told me many times she wished she could visit New York one day. She also wished we had had a place{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(exercise) outside and watched our daughters playing." He decided to put his plan into {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(act) — building a garden. To make a surprise for his wife, Stevens sent her off for a trip to New York City.

    Then, he went crazy building the garden. After ten days, all the work {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (pay) off. It made a big difference to Stevens' life. He wrote, "The kids love  {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (they) new space. And I feel strangely{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (satisfy) to build this, which inspires me to keep going."

    If you're in a hurricane(飓风)-hit area and plan on riding it out, proper {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (prepare) is key. And there is one thing you should have around at all times: a plastic water bottle. Why? When the weather {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (take) a turn for the worse, a water bottle is one of the most useful things {#blank#}3{#/blank#} you have in your home. It might even save your life. Severe flooding caused by a hurricane can make the local drinking water dirty with some {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (danger) substances. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (avoid) a serious illness, it's best to store plenty of bottled water to drink safely.

    That's pretty obvious, of course. But keep those empty plastic bottles around after you drink, too, {#blank#}6{#/blank#} they have lots of uncommon uses. For example, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} empty water bottle can turn into a water filter(滤水器) if you need to drink from the tap. If your lights go {#blank#}8{#/blank#}, don't go the old-fashioned way with candles; you can rely on your handy plastic water bottles once again. Simply tape a small flashlight to the bottom of the bottle, and {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (it) plastic (and the water inside) will amplify the glow(增强光亮). Then the little light can {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (use) to light up a room or send signals to rescue personnel.
