If you visit the animal shelter (收容所) in Salinas, California, you'll see huge signs that have a picture of a dog and a cat on them. These {#blank#}1{#/blank#} are put in front of the shelter to catch people's attention. The signs{#blank#}2{#/blank#} people interested in the shelter and encouraged them to visit it and maybe even take a cat or a dog into their homes.

     Each year, the Salinas shelter accepts thousands of dogs and cats. The animals are {#blank#}3{#/blank#} lost ones or are left by people who can't take care of{#blank#}4{#/blank#} _. Of all the animals, some of them are taken into new homes. Some {#blank#}5{#/blank#}  are moved to other shelters. And, unluckily, some cannot be saved because they are too sick or are thought to be dangerous.

      Animal shelters {#blank#}6{#/blank#}  food, medicine, and safe places for animals. But they are not the {#blank#}7{#/blank#}  homes. The animals stay in small cages (笼子). The people{#blank#}8{#/blank#}  work at shelters do their best to care for the animals, but the animals do not always get the attention or exercise they need.

      To prevent animals from becoming homeless, pet owners should take good care of their pets. Most pet doctors also suggest people make {#blank#}9{#/blank#}  their pets have a special surgery ( 外科手术). It{#blank#}10{#/blank#} _ animals from having more babies. And that reduces（减少）the number of homeless animals.

   Although English people don't care about what they eat, they care about the places{#blank#}1{#/blank#}   they eat. Rich families usually have a nice dining room.
   English people like to eat out. The rich go to big {#blank#}2{#/blank#}  . The poor go to small ones or fast-food restaurants. There are also a lot of {#blank#}3{#/blank#} restaurants, such as Italian, Chinese, Indian,{#blank#}4{#/blank#} and so on. A good restaurant is usually big and clean. Waiters and waitresses wear{#blank#}5{#/blank#} and are friendly and{#blank#}6{#/blank#}  When you are eating, you might hear gentle{#blank#}7{#/blank#} . Small restaurants or fast-food restaurants are noisier but clean and pleasant, too.
   In summer, English people like eating{#blank#}8{#/blank#} . People bring baskets of sandwiches and sit on the {#blank#}9{#/blank#}  in the park, enjoying the sun. Some English kids' favorite food is pizza, and most kids hate vegetables. Some of them like{#blank#}10{#/blank#} the most famous English food, fish and chips.

    On December 14, 2017, the famous Chinese poet (诗人) Yu Guangzhong left this world in Taiwan. The news made many people sad. "Mr. Yu's poems often {#blank#}1{#/blank#} my heart when I read them...,"Mai Luoluo, a famous writer for{#blank#}2{#/blank#}, said on Sina Weibo.

    Yu was born in 1928 in Nanjing, Jiangsu. Then he moved to Taiwan{#blank#}3{#/blank#} his family in the 1950s. After that, he lived and worked there{#blank#}4{#/blank#} he died.

    Xiangchou (Nostalgia) is Yu's famous poem. People{#blank#}5{#/blank#} the poem easily if they open Chinese textbooks in senior high school. It was written from Yu's {#blank#}6{#/blank#} experience. In it, he showed how much he missed the Chinese mainland when he was in Taiwan. The poem came out in 1971. It {#blank#}7{#/blank#} became popular with all Chinese around the world. Yu is also a great translator (翻译家). And he once translated English poet Siegfried Sassoon's poem In me, Past,

    Present, Future Meet into Chinese. Most of people think it is the{#blank#}8{#/blank#} translation of all. The famous line “心有猛虎，细嗅蔷薇” just comes from his translation.

    You spent all {#blank#}9{#/blank#} life on the things he liked. Once he said, "Just because of my passion (热情) for the Chinese language, I always try my best {#blank#}10{#/blank#}something." He then added that his love for his mother and his motherland made this passion forever. Let's remember this great man.

    Do animals have their culture? What do we mean by "culture"? Recent years social scientists have begun to ask if culture is found just in humans, or if some animals have their culture too. When we think of culture, we mean a way of life that a group of people have in common(共同的). Culture is the {#blank#}1{#/blank#} and beliefs(信仰) that a country or a group has. It is the way of behaviour that helps people live together. It is also the way of behaviour that makes a group of people {#blank#}2{#/blank#} other groups.

    Our culture makes us lose strength, claws(爪子), long teeth, and other defenses (防卫). Instead we use tools, cooperate(合作) with {#blank#}3{#/blank#}, and communicate with language. But this kind of "culture" can also be found in the lives of some animals. Animals can also make tools, for example. We {#blank#}4{#/blank#} think that the ability to use tools was the dividing line(分界线) between human beings and other animals. However, we have found that is not like this. Some animals can not only use tools but also make tools themselves. Animals can also share knowledge with each other and use their own language to communicate. So it may be important for us to know that the line dividing us from animals is not as clear as we used to think.
